Abstract: An immersion lithographic apparatus is described with a drain configured to remove liquid from a gap between an edge of the substrate and the substrate table on which the substrate is supported. The drain is provided with a means to provide liquid to the drain irrespective of the position of the substrate table and/or a means to saturate gas within the drain. Those measures reduce the variations in heat load due to evaporation of liquid in the drain.

Abstract: A current-perpendicular-to-the-plane magnetoresistive (CPP MR) sensor has a shield layers that also functions as the sensor's reference layer. In a CPP MR disk drive read head, the shield layer has a fixed magnetization oriented substantially parallel to the air-bearing surface (ABS) of the slider that supports the read head. The quiescent magnetization of the sensor free layer is oriented at an angle relative to the magnetization of the shield layer, preferably between 120 and 150 degrees, to optimize the sensor response to magnetic fields from the recorded data bits on the disk. The magnetization of the free layer is biased by a biasing structure that includes a ferromagnetic side biasing layer formed near the side edges of the free layer and a ferromagnetic back biasing layer that is recessed from the ABS and has a magnetization oriented generally orthogonal to the ABS.

Abstract: A method for making a master disk to be used in the nanoimprinting process to make patterned-media disks uses an electrically conductive substrate and guided self-assembly of a block copolymer to form patterns of generally radial lines and/or generally concentric rings of one of the block copolymer components. A metal is electroplated onto the substrate in the regions not protected by the lines and/or rings. After removal of the block copolymer component, the remaining metal pattern is used as an etch mask to fabricate either the final master disk or two separate molds that are then used to fabricate the master disk.

Abstract: The present invention relates nucleic acid constructs for the production of recombinant parvoviral (e.g. adeno-associated viral) vectors in insect cells, to insect cells comprising such constructs and to methods wherein the cells are used to produce recombinant parvoviral virions. The insect cells preferably comprise a first nucleotide sequence encoding the parvoviral rep proteins whereby the initiation codon for translation of the parvoviral Rep78 protein is a suboptimal initiation codon that effects partial exon skipping upon expression in insect cells. The insect cell further comprises a second nucleotide sequence comprising at least one parvoviral (AAV) inverted terminal repeat (ITR) nucleotide sequence and a third nucleotide sequence comprising a sequences coding for the parvoviral capsid proteins.

Abstract: An anti cavity bioconsumable liquid which may be provided in the liquid form or frozen form is disclosed herein. The liquid may include up to about 5 wt. % xylitol for the purposes of mitigating tooth decay when the bioconsumable liquid is ingested or consumed by a person. Moreover, the bioconsumable liquid may include up to about 5 wt. % of dextrose but never more than the wt. % of xylitol for the purposes of sweetening the bioconsumable liquid to retain an acceptable flavor profile. An infant, child or adult may consume the bioconsumable liquid during which the xylitol acts to mitigate tooth decay. The bioconsumable liquid may also be frozen in an ice pop configuration and consumed by a child or an adult. The ice pop retains an acceptable flavor profile and also mitigates tooth decay.
Abstract: A magnetic write pole structure that is configured to greatly simplify the manufacture of a perpendicular magnetic write head. The write head has a magnetic yoke that is oriented along a plane that is perpendicular to the direction of the data track. This allows the entire yoke to be formed in a single electroplating step, rather than being built up in several plated layers. The yoke can also be formed with magnetic side shields, or with a trailing or wrap around shield, which can be integral with the rest of the yoke and can be advantageously formed in the same, single electroplating step.

Abstract: A near-field transducer (NFT) has a primary tip that concentrates the oscillating charge of the NFT onto a substrate, such as magnetic recording medium, to heat regions of the medium, and a secondary tip. The secondary tip is located close to a temperature sensor, such as an electrical conductor whose resistance varies with temperature. The temperature sensor senses heat from the secondary tip and thus properties of the substrate like surface topography and the presence or absence of metallic material. The NFT can be part of a bit-patterned media (BPM) thermally-assisted recording (TAR) disk drive. The temperature sensor output is used to control the write pulses from the disk drive's write head so the magnetic write field is synchronized with the location of the magnetic data islands.
