    Abstract: Embodiments in accordance with the present invention provide a disk unit capable of restricting access to data stored in the recording medium depending on users. In one embodiment, the user enters a password into a host computer. This password is transferred to a password verification section. Then, the password verification section checks whether the password coincides with any one of authentication passwords stored in an authentication password storage section. If the password coincides with any one of the passwords, the password verification section supplies an authentication signal to an operation mode control section. The operation mode control section supplies an operation mode signal to a controller by receiving the authentication signal. The controller controls execution of the operation mode according to the operation mode signal.

    Abstract: There is provided a bidirectional transmission coil capable of miniaturizing a structure and carrying out reliable transmission of a data signal. A receiving coil L2 is arranged to be positioned concentrically with the transmitting coil L1, for inducing a reception signal by the magnetic flux from outside. A first cancel coil Lac is connected to the transmitting coil L1 in series so as to be led-out from a middle of the transmitting coil L and is led-in to the lead-out part. The first cancel coil Lac is arranged so as to sandwich the receiving coil L2 between the first cancel coil Lac and the transmitting coil L1, wherein the magnetic flux in a direction opposite to the magnetic flux from the transmitting coil L1 is generated in the receiving coil L2.

    Abstract: A Flash memory system and a method for data management using the embodiments of the invention use special test cells with Early Degradation Detection (EDD) circuitry instead of using the actual user-data storage cells are described. The Flash memory test cells can be made to serve as a “canary in a coal mine” by being made more sensitive than the standard cells by using experimentally determined sensitive write VT and variable read VT. Techniques for early degradation detection (EDD) in Flash memories measure the dispersion of the threshold voltages (VT's), of a set (e.g. page) of NAND Flash memory cells during read operations. In an embodiment of the invention the time-to-completion (TTC) values for the read operation for the memory cells are used as a proxy for dispersion of the threshold voltages (VT's). A Dispersion Analyzer determines the dispersion of the set of TTC values.

A cleaning arrangement (19 to 24) for carrying out the method is also disclosed. The invention also relates to a method for generating a jet (20) of cleaning gas and to a corresponding cleaning gas generation arrangement.

There are at least two groups of spring elements which have deflection lines that differ in the circumferential direction. In case of a relative rotation between the inner part and the outer part, owing to differences in deflection lines, there is a strong spatial displacement of the damping medium, so that such a damper or coupling has a high damping potential.

    Abstract: Two levels of error correction decoding are performed using first and second level decoders. A composite code formed by combining an inner component code and an outer component code can be used to decode the data and correct any errors. Performing two level decoding using a composite code allows the size of the inner parity block to be reduced to a single Reed-Solomon symbol while keeping a good code rate. The first level decoder generates soft information. The soft information can indicate a most likely error event for each possible syndrome value of the inner component code. The soft information can also include error metric values for each of the most likely error events. The second level decoder generates corrected syndrome values based on the soft information using the outer component code. The most likely trellis path that corresponds to the corrected syndrome values is then selected.

    Abstract: A rack for positioning food slabs in a horizontal cooking area such as over a grill includes a rectangular frame which carries a plurality of bent rod food slab supports at a rearward tilt. Each support includes a pair of outer risers having interned lower ends. Between the outer risers, the rod is bent in a digital waveform and includes forwardly extending lower cradle having upwardly sloped shoulders for engaging the bottom of a food slab. Notches are provided in the upper edge of the frame sides forwardly of each aperture and a notch engaging post extends from the cradle shoulders which are adjacent each outer riser. The ends of the frame are lapped and hinged, so that the frame may be folded along a longitudinal axis for compact storage, with the slab supports nested within the folded frame.

A Dispersion Analyzer determines the dispersion of the set of TTC values. In one embodiment the delta between the maximum and minimum TTC values is used as the dispersion measurement. If the measured TTC dispersion differs by more than a selected amount from a reference dispersion value, a warning signal is provided to indicate that the page of memory has degraded. The warning signal can be used to take appropriate action such as moving the data to a new page.
