These surface-coating binders are used especially for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

    Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a red pigment from perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid N,N'-bis-methylimide which has been obtained by methylating the corresponding diimide or by fusing naphthalic acid N-methylimide with an alkali metal hydroxide which comprises vatting a suspension of N,N'-bis-methylimide dye with 0.5-1.5 times by weight of an alkali metal dithionite in the presence of up to 4 times by weight of an alkali metal hydroxide relative to the quantity of the dithionite, at a temperature of from room temperature to 100.degree. C., to obtain the corresponding leuco compound, cooling the resulting solution to 20.degree.-40.degree. C., isolating and washing the leuco compound with fresh vatting solution until the solution is virtually colorless and clean and then oxidizing the leuco compound.

    Abstract: A process for the manufacture of an acicular magnetic iron oxide containing from 0.5 to 10 percent by weight of cobalt and up to 24 percent by weight of divalent iron, each based on the amount of iron(III) oxide, wherein an aqueous suspension of gamma-iron(III) oxide, containing cobalt(II) and iron(II) ions, the suspension having a hydroxyl ion concentration of more than 3.6.times.10.sup.-6 moles/liter, is heated at from 50.degree. to 100.degree. C. for at least 15 minutes, and the resulting precipitate is filtered off, washed until neutral, dried at below 100.degree. C. and thereafter heated at from 100.degree. to 200.degree. C.The products thus obtained give, even when their cobalt content is low, a very high coercive force, while the effect of temperature on the coercive force and residual induction is very slight.

In the vicinity of the transition from the hub to the first turn of the spiral, a distributor spiral is provided to avoid flowless zones in the hub region. The mixture can also include a neutral phosphorus compound and/or acid anhydrides to enhance flame retardant properties. Optionally, also, the oxyalkylation reaction can be terminated by adding a tri (lower alkyl) amine and alkylene oxide to react with residual phenolic hydrogen in the mixture.

    Abstract: An erase head for erasing single tracks on multi-track magnetic recording tapes by means of a constant magnetic field applied in a direction perpendicular to the direction of tape travel, to avoid any asymmetrical residual magnetization with respect to the direction of a magnetizing field used for recording. A configuration of two pole pieces and two corresponding shields, spaced out from the pole pieces and generally coplanar with the end faces thereof, ensures that the magnetic field strength is relatively uniform in a region between the shields, and falls to a relatively low value outside this region.
