Abstract: Finely divided metal oxides produced by combustion of metal carbonyls are separated from the stream of gas by filtration. Before filtration, the stream of gas is subjected to a permanent change of direction in a tubular zone. This change of direction must be sufficient to cause a centrifugal acceleration which is from at least 1,000 to 10,000 times the acceleration due to gravity.

Abstract: In a process for the manufacture of 2-amino-3-bromoanthraquinone by heating 2-aminoanthraquinone with bromine (in the molar ratio of 1:1) in sulfuric acid, while mixing, the improvement wherein crude 2-aminoanthraquinone, in sulfuric acid of from 60 to 90 percent strength by weight, which contains from 10 to 15% by weight of an alkanecarboxylic acid of 3 or 4 carbon atoms or a mixture of such acids, is heated with from 1 to 1.05 moles of bromine per mole of 2-aminoanthraquinone at from 130 to 150.degree. C. The 2-amino-3-bromoanthraquinone which is isolated may be used for the manufacture of dyes. It is at least as pure as that obtained from purified 2-aminoanthraquinone by the process of the prior art.

Abstract: In a process for making chlorine electrolytically in which a build-up of nitrogen trichloride occurs in the bottoms of cooling apparatus, a method and apparatus is provided wherein the nitrogen trichloride is dissolved in an organic solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, the chlorine removed, and the solution treated to destroy the otherwise hazardous nitrogen trichloride. The solvent is then separated and recycled to avoid environmentally undesirable waste products.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the use, as hydraulic fluids or metalworking lubricants, of compositions having water as a base and improved extreme pressure lubricating and wear-preventing characteristics. The hydraulic fluids of the invention are nonflammable and comprise a synergistic combination of a phosphate ester and a sulfur-containing compound. The compositions can be thickened, if desired, using a polyglycol type thickener and can contain additives known to the art such as defoamers and corrosion inhibitors. Stable concentrates comprising the phosphate ester and sulfur-containing compound can be prepared.
Abstract: A process for converting viscous reactive chlorine- and sulfur-containing production residues into solid products which can be dumped, wherein the said residues are treated with alkaline materials. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, chlorine-containing and sulfur-containing production residues which are viscous and still reactive, e.g. the residues obtained from the manufacture of plant protection agents, dyes or fine chemicals, are converted in a simple and efficient manner into solid products which can be dumped. The treatment according to the invention has the advantage that no further pollution of the environment by waste gases or waste water results.

Abstract: Polymers in which the side branches contain optically active 2-(4-methyl-cyclohex-3-en-1-yl)-propyl groups, and their preparation. The new polymers are used for the production of moldings, coatings and adhesives, and for finishing paper or textiles. They have K values of from 20 to 140.
Abstract: Diaphragms for electrolytic cells are prepared by depositing onto a cathode screen, discrete thermoplastic fibers. The fibers are highly branched, and which, when deposited form an entanglement or network thereof, which does not require bonding or cementing.
Abstract: Alkylphenols are manufactured by reacting phenols with olefins, stripping the reaction mixture by means of an inert gas, cooling the phenol-containing gas mixture and removing the unconverted phenol. The products are starting materials for the manufacture of dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, emsulfiers, dispersing agents, stabilizers, antioxidants, plasticizers, corrosion inhibitors, disinfectants, seed dressings, stabilizers against ageing, crop protection agents and scents.

Abstract: A process for obtaining coarsely crystalline pure ammonium sulfate from reaction mixtures which have been obtained by Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone-oxime with sulfuric acid or oleum, by neutralizing the mixtures with ammonia at an elevated temperature, with the addition of recycled ammonium sulfate mother liquor, the concentration being so chosen that during the neutralization no solid ammonium sulfate precipitates, separating the crude caprolactam from the ammonium sulfate solution, crystallizing ammonium sulfate by evaporating the ammonium sulfate solution under reduced pressure, separating off the crystallized ammonium sulfate and recycling the mother liquor to the neutralization stage. The neutralization is carried out at from 80.degree. to 115.degree. C. under autogenous pressure and the ammonium sulfate solution obtained after separating off the crude lactam is evaporated under a pressure of from 200 to 600 mm Hg while cooling to from 72.degree. to 101.degree.
