Abstract: A process for the manufacture of copolymers of ethylene with tert-butyl acrylate and acrylic acid at from 200.degree. to 350.degree. C under pressures above 800 atmospheres using mean residence times of up to at most 100 seconds, in which the reaction mixture obtained from the polymerization is kept for from 2 to 10 minutes at from 200.degree. to 250.degree. C under a pressure of not more than 500 atmospheres. Terpolymers are obtained which may be used as hot-melt adhesives in the form of thin and extremely homogeneous films.

Abstract: Finely-divided dispersed solids are prepared by the emulsion polymerization in the presence of a free radical catalyst of a major amount of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or mixture of monomers and a minor amount of a hydroxy-terminated organic compound having from one to eight hydroxyl groups, an oxyethylene content of from about 15 to 80 weight percent, a hydroxyl equivalent weight of from 250 to 10,000 and containing a polymerizable carbon-to-carbon double bond. The resulting polymeric solids are particularly useful in the preparation of reinforced polymer compositions.

Abstract: New acetals, containing a 6-membered ring, of 2-methyl-2,4-dialkoxy-3-buten-1-al, are obtained by reacting the corresponding 2-methyl-2-alkoxy-3-butyn-1-al-acetals with a mixture of the appropriate alcohol and an alkali metal alcoholate of the said alcohol at from 100.degree. to 200.degree. C. The acetals are intermediates for the preparation of carotinoid-based physiologically safe food dyes.
Abstract: Stained textile fabrics, especially cotton-polyester, rayon-polyester blends stained in use with blood stains, can be reclaimed and returned to use by the process of washing and bleaching said fabrics in the presence of a non-ionic or anionic surface-active agent, together with an oxygen-releasing bleaching agent and a chlorine-releasing bleaching agent, said bleaching agents used either successively or simultaneously. The laundering process involves the use of aqueous solutions of bleaching agents at elevated temperatures and at high pH. The process of the invention provides a synergistic improvement in the removal of stains as compared with the use of either an oxygen-releasing bleaching agent or a chlorine-releasing bleaching agent. The process can include a hot aqueous acid sour treatment to remove rust stains and an aqueous sour to neutralize alkalies in the bleached fabric. The treatment can be completed in a period of time of about 30 to about 90 minutes.

When in the form of a stable homogeneous liquid, the composition may contain (a) a quaternized fatty amide, an aqueous emulsion of partially oxidized polyethylene or a fatty amphoteric compound as the softening agent, (b) hydrofluorosilicic acid, ammonium silicofluoride, zinc silicofluoride, ammonium acid fluoride, potassium acid fluoride, or orthophosphoric acid as the souring agent, and (c) water. When in the form of a stable dry solid, the composition may contain (a) a quaternized fatty amide or fatty amphoteric compound as the softening agent, and (b) ammonium silicofluoride, potassium silicofluoride, sodium silicofluoride, zinc silicofluoride, ammonium acid fluoride, sodium acid fluoride or potassium acid fluoride. A method of preparing the liquid composition is provided which insures that it remains stable and homogeneous while awaiting use.

Abstract: A polyamide-imide precondensate which is solid at room temperature, but is fusible and soluble in polar solvents. It is manufactured by first condensing 1 mole of diamine with 2 moles of tricarboxylic acid anhydride in a diol as the solvent, to give a diimide-dicarboxylic acid, then esterifying the diimide-dicarboxylic acid with the diol and finally effecting the polycondensation by adding 1 mole of diamine per mole of diester. The precondensate may be used, as a melt, as a solution in organic solvents or as an aqueous dispersion, for coating electrical conductors.

Abstract: To isolate ammonia from gas mixtures containing ammonia and carbon dioxide, the gas mixture is first partially absorbed in a solvent, with residence times of at most 0.1 second, and the non-absorbed gas is then separated from the solution obtained. The solution is then subjected to a first desorption stage, in which only the ammonia present in an excess over a molar ratio of 3 parts of ammonia to 1 part of carbon dioxide is expelled by heating, and the entrained carbon dioxide is washed out of the expelled ammonia by means of solutions containing free ammonia. The solution remaining after the first desorption stage is substantially freed from ammonia and carbon dioxide in a second desorption stage and the expelled gas, containing solvent, together with fresh gas mixture is fed to the adsorption stage, while the solvent obtained from the second desorption stage is employed for the absorption.
