Abstract: Disclosed is a PVC pipe cement composition that comprises a polymeric material of a methyl methacrylate homopolymer or copolymer, a styrene-acrylonitrile polymer, and a rubber grafted with at least a methacrylic acid ester of a C1 to C8 alkanol; and at least about 10% by weight solvent.
Abstract: Continuous anionic polymerization and melt-spinning of a polycaprolactam includes forming a reaction mixture by bringing at least two streams of liquid caprolactam respectively containing a polymerization initiator and co-initiator into contact with one another, and then subjecting the reaction mixture to anionic polymerization reaction conditions to obtain a molten polycaprolactam. The molten polycaprolactam is the directly (i.e., without intermediate solidification) transferred to, and extruded through, a fiber-forming orifice of a spinneret to form a fiber thereof. One exemplary system to achieve such continuous anionic polymerization and melt-spinning of polycaprolactam includes a mixer for receiving and mixing at least two streams of liquid caprolactam respectively containing a polymerization initiator and co-initiator, and a reactor and melt-spinning apparatus downstream of the mixer.

Abstract: A method for screening for potential fungicides identifies biochemical or chemical agents that inhibit the formation of the fungal sterol ergosterol by inhibiting cytochrome P450 reductase or reductase related enzymes or proteins involved in its biosynthesis. Test samples are incubated in two yeast strain cultures, and the extent of growth inhibition is compared between them. One culture is supersensitive to cytochrome P450 reductase inhibitors; the yeast strain typically contains a disrupted or deleted cytochrome P450 reductase gene. The other culture is less sensitive to the compounds, typically exhibiting enhanced permeability such as that observed in erg6 mutants. In preferred embodiments, a known cytochrome P450 reductase related electron-transfer protein inhibitor such as keto-conazole, miconazole, dinaconazole or econazole is employed as a positive control. Preferred embodiments employ solidified media, and test samples are applied to disks or wells.

Abstract: Method of purifying triethanolamine prepared by reacting aqueous ammonia with ethylene oxide in the liquid phase under pressure and at elevated temperature by removing excess ammonia, water and monoethanolamine from the reaction product, reacting the resulting crude product with ethylene oxide at temperatures of from 110 to 180° C., and then rectifying the mixture in the presence of phosphorous or hypophosphorous acid or compounds thereof.
Abstract: In a process for the preparation of acrolein and/or acrylic acid from propane, the propane is subjected, in a first reaction stage, to a partial oxydehydrogenation with molecular oxygen under homogeneous and/or heterogeneous catalysis to give propene and the product gas mixture formed in the first reaction stage is then used for the preparation of acrolein and/or acrylic acid by gas-phase catalytic propene oxidation.

Abstract: A process for the separation by distillation of a mixture of 1,4-butanediol and at least one 4-hydroxybutyraldehyde, its cyclic hemiacetal and its cyclic full acetals with at least one further alcohol by carrying out the distillation in the presence of an alkaline compound. The mixture to be separated preferably contains a cyclic full acetal of 4-hydroxybutyraldehyde with a further alcohol which has a lower boiling point than butanediol and also the further alcohol in free form. The process is particularly suitable for the separation by distillation of mixtures formed in the hydrogenation of maleic acid derivatives.
