Abstract: A reconfigurable metamaterial is used to enhance the reception field of a radio frequency (“RF”) coil for use in magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”). In general, the metamaterial can be a metasurface, which may be flexible, having a periodic array of resonators. Each resonator in the periodic array can be defined as a unit cell of the metamaterial and/or metasurface. The unit cells include a first conductor and a second conductor separated by an insulator layer. The first conductor can be a solid conductor and the second conductor can be a conductive fluid (e.g., a liquid metal, a liquid metal alloy) contained within a microfluidic channel. Varying the volume of conductive fluid in each unit cell adjust the signal enhancement ratio of the metamaterial.

Abstract: A system for testing memory includes logic that is configured to perform various normal memory operations (e.g., erase, read and write operations) on a memory device and to determine operational parameters associated with the memory operations. As an example, the amount of time to perform one or more memory operations may be measured, a number of errors resulting from the memory operations may be determined, or a number of memory cells storing noisy bits may be identified. One or more of the operational parameters may then be analyzed to determine whether they are in a range expected for counterfeit or defective memory. If so, the logic determines that the memory under test is counterfeit or defective and provides a notification about such determination.

Abstract: A method to form a three-dimensional photonic crystal template with a gradient structure involves irradiating a photoresist composition of a thickness of at least 15 ?m from at least four laser beams to yield a periodic patterned with a percolating matrix of mass in constructive volumes of a cured photoresist composition and destructive volumes of voids free of condensed matter where the proportion of constructive volume displays a gradient from the irradiated surface to the substrate after development. For a given light intensity, photoinitiator concentration in the photoresist composition, and a given thickness, by irradiating for a relatively short period, a three-dimensional photonic crystal template displaying a gradient having greater constructive volume proximal the air interface forms and a relatively long irradiation period results in a gradient having greater constructive volume proximal the substrate.

Abstract: A system for improving radiation tolerance of memory senses an amount of radiation exposure and, based on the sensed amount of radiation exposure, determines whether to perform one or more techniques for mitigating the effects of the radiation exposure. As an example, the system may perform a data refresh operation by re-writing data that has been corrupted by radiation, or the system may adjust the reference voltage used to read memory cells. In another example, the system may perform a fault repair operation by re-programming cells that have erroneously transitioned from a program state to an erase state. The system may selectively perform different radiation-mitigation techniques in a tiered approach based on the sensed amount of radiation in order to limit the adverse effects of the more invasive techniques.

Abstract: A method of compositional feature representation learning for video understanding is described. The method includes individually processing a sequence of video frames received as an input of a feature map network to generate a plurality of feature maps. The method also includes binding the plurality of feature maps to a fixed set of slot variables using an attention model according to a motion segmentation signal. The method further includes combining slot states corresponding to the fixed set of slot variables into a combined feature map. The method also includes decoding the combined feature map to form a reconstructed sequence of video frames, in which objects discovered in the reconstructed sequence of video frames are identified.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a piezoelectric thin film suspended above a carrier substrate, where the piezoelectric thin film is of one of lithium niobate (LiNbO3) or lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) adapted to propagate an acoustic wave in a Lamb wave mode excited by a component of an electric field that is oriented in a longitudinal direction along a length of the piezoelectric thin film. A signal electrode is disposed on, and in physical contact with, the piezoelectric thin film and oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. A ground electrode disposed on, and in physical contact with, the piezoelectric thin film and oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, where the ground electrode is separated from the signal electrode by a gap comprising a longitudinal distance and in which the acoustic wave resonates. A release window is formed within the piezoelectric thin film adjacent to the ground electrode.

Abstract: A passive thermal regulation system includes a substrate and a coating. The coating is positioned to encapsulate at least a portion of the substrate. The coating includes a first hydrogel layer and a second hydrogel layer. The first hydrogel layer has a plurality of carbon materials configured to absorb a solar radiation. The second hydrogel layer includes a hydrogel that is different from the first hydrogel layer. The coating, at a first temperature, causes the passive thermal regulation system to passively switch from a solar reflective state to solar absorber state to permit the plurality of carbon materials to absorb the solar radiation. At a second temperature, the coating causes the system to passively switch from the solar absorber state to the solar reflective state where the hydrogel of the second hydrogel layer inhibits the solar radiation from absorption. The second temperature is greater than the first temperature.

Abstract: The present disclosure generally pertains to methods of preparing a well-ordered nanoparticle coating on a substrate. A nanoparticle solution having nanoparticles in a solvent is deposited on a sub-phase of a denser, immiscible liquid. A constrained area on the top surface of the sub-phase is provided, where nanoparticle solution spreading is physically limited and the nanoparticles spontaneously form a uniformly ordered monolayer on the sub-phase within the constrained area. Notably, no compression of the nanoparticle film occurs after the spreading phase in order to form the monolayer. After the monolayer is formed, a substrate is placed into contact with the monolayer and coated with a well-ordered nanoparticle coating.
