Patent number: 11473546Abstract: A starter assembly which includes a switch for energizing a solenoid. Energizing the solenoid biases a starter gear into engagement and energizes the starter motor. A thermally responsive switch is positioned to absorb heat generated by operation of the electric motor and is disposed in an electrical line controlling operation of the switch controlling the solenoid wherein opening of the thermally responsive switch results in the opening of the solenoid switch. The use of such a thermally responsive switch de-energizes the electric motor when the electric motor is subjected to elevated operating temperatures that might otherwise cause damage to the electric motor. The starter assembly may also include control circuitry that includes a microprocessor wherein the control circuitry is operably coupled with the switch controlling the solenoid. The control circuitry is programmed to de-energize the solenoid upon the satisfaction of predetermined conditions to thereby prevent damage to the electrical motor.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2020Date of Patent: October 18, 2022Assignee: BorgWarner Inc.Inventors: Michael E. Patent number: 11473650Abstract: A method of operating a shifting system for a vehicle transmission includes engaging a clutch to operatively couple one of first and second gear ratios to an input member, and moving a disconnect from a first disconnect position where a disconnectable component is disengaged from the disconnect, to a second disconnect position where the disconnectable component is engaged with the disconnect to operatively couple the other of the first and second gear ratios to the input member through a shifting assembly. Engaging the clutch and moving the disconnect are performed such that the clutch is operatively coupled to one of the first and second gear ratios at the same time that the shifting assembly is operatively coupled to the other one of the first and second gear ratios, thus preventing torque from being transmitted through either the first and second gear ratios of the vehicle transmission to park the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2020Date of Patent: October 18, 2022Assignee: BorgWarner Inc.Inventors: R. Patent number: 11469630Abstract: Rectangular conductor wires are often used in alternator applications requiring a high slot fill to maximize output and efficiency. However for lower output and efficiency applications, round conductor wire may increase cost competiveness in these alternators. A common lamination for a core alternatively accommodates both rectangular conductor wires and round conductor wires for different applications without any other component changes. The lamina has a slot that aligns round wire in a single row within the slot and provides a predetermined clearance from the slot opening. A stator core formed from these laminae has a relatively high slot fill factor when wound with the round wire. The same stator core can be alternatively wound with square wire to increase the slot fill factor even higher. The common lamination results in two stator configurations: a high slot fill version (round wire) and a very high slot fill version (square wire).Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2020Date of Patent: October 11, 2022Assignee: BorgWarner Inc.Inventors: Jiwon Chung, Kirk Neet
