Abstract: A system and method for policing bad powered devices in power over Ethernet. Degradation of components within powered devices can lead to noise and ripple that exceed specified thresholds. This noise and ripple can adversely impact the operation of the power sourcing equipment. A noise detector implemented in the power sourcing equipment can detect the presence of such noise and ripple and modify the application of power to the particular port.
Abstract: A number of features for enhancing the performance of a communication system, in which data is transmitted between a base station and a plurality of subscriber stations located different distances from the base station, are presented. The power transmission level, slot timing, and equalization of the subscriber stations are set by a ranging process. Data is transmitted by the subscriber stations in fragmented form. Various measures are taken to make transmission from the subscriber stations robust. The uplink data transmission is controlled to permit multiple access from the subscriber stations.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described that utilize dynamic time scale modification (TSM) to achieve reduced bit rate audio coding. In accordance with embodiments, different levels of TSM compression are selectively applied to segments of an input speech signal prior to encoding thereof by an encoder. Encoded TSM-compressed segments are received at a decoder which decodes such segments and then applies an appropriate level of TSM decompression to each based on information received from the encoder. By selectively applying different levels of TSM compression to segments of an input speech signal prior to encoding, a coding bit rate associated with the encoder/decoder is reduced. Furthermore, by selecting a level of TSM compression for each segment of the input speech signal that takes into account certain local characteristics of that signal, such bit rate reduction is provided without introducing unacceptable levels of distortion into an output speech signal produced by the decoder.

Abstract: A system includes a first transmitter, a second transmitter, and a legacy receiver. The first transmitter transmits information via a first channel to the legacy receiver. The second transmitter transmits a time-shifted version of the information via a second channel to the legacy receiver. The legacy receiver combines the information received via the first channel and the time-shifted information received via the second channel to provide combined information. The legacy receiver processes the combined information as though it is received via a single channel.
Abstract: A hybrid instantaneous/differential encoding technique is described herein that may be used to reduce the bit rate required to encode a pitch period associated with a segment of a speech signal in a manner that will result in relatively little or no degradation of a decoded speech signal generated using the encoded pitch period. The hybrid instantaneous/differential encoding technique is advantageously applicable to any speech codec that encodes a pitch period associated with a segment of a speech signal.
Abstract: Embodiments of a capacitive tuning system implementing a tunable capacitive array are presented herein. The tunable capacitive array includes both scaled coarse capacitors and one or more fine capacitors. The one or more fine capacitors advantageously reduce a differential nonlinearity associated with the scaled coarse capacitors. The use of fine capacitors limits additional area requirements in an integrated circuit implementation, while improving the accuracy of the capacitive tuning system.

The plurality of receiver front ends may comprise a cellular receiver front end and a VHF/UHF broadcast receiver front end. The BBPIC may communicate with one or more processors, for example, a CPU and/or DSP, via the processor interface, for example, an AMBA bus. The BBPIC may also communicate with a power management unit via a control interface, for example, an I2C bus, with memory devices via a memory interface, for example, a serial random access memory bus, and/or with peripheral devices via a peripheral interface, for example, a serial bus.
Abstract: A repeater device may be utilized to enable forwarding extreme high frequency (EHF) communication between EHF-enabled wireless devices. The repeater device may utilize polarization isolation to prevent and/or reduce interference between received and transmitted EHF RF signals in the repeater device. The repeater device may utilize plurality of polarization antenna arrays for reception and transmission of EHF RF signals to facilitate polarization isolation between received and transmitted EHF RF signals. Alternatively, the repeater device may utilize a single polarization antenna array, with switching elements, to facilitate polarization isolation between received and transmitted EHF RF signals. The repeater device may utilize control connections to enable communicating with the EHF-enabled wireless devices to facilitate performing polarization isolation at the repeater device. Non-EHF interfaces, for example Bluetooth, may be utilized to establish the control connections.
Abstract: A system and method that produces a spatial average for interlaced video in a deinterlacer. The system detects edges in the video images and determines the angle at which the edges are oriented based on the gradient in the x-direction and the gradient in the y-direction. The direction of the edge is determined using the angle information of the edge. The system may also determine the strength of the edge. Based on the determined characteristics of the edge a filter may be selected to produce a spatial average of the edge in the image.
Abstract: A method of combining multiple frames of data into a single access to a shared communications medium improves network efficiency transmitting in a fashion compatible with legacy network equipment. An increase in the efficiency of use of a shared communications medium is realized by amortizing the overhead of fixed elements of a communication protocol over multiple frames. The sharing of preamble signaling, elimination of multiple inter-frame gaps or spaces, and the use of a legacy signal field permits a representative embodiment of the present invention to more effectively use a shared communication medium, while in addition providing backward compatible support for legacy network stations.
Abstract: A method for dropping lower priority packets for transmission over a wireless communication medium is provided. A central device receives one or more packets to be transferred to one or more data providers, each packet having a priority. Then, based on the priority, a media access controller stores each of the packets in one or more priority queues in a fixed shared memory space in such a way as to maintain the order in which the packets were received in each of the priority queues. The media access controller monitors the number of packets in each of the priority queues and signals an interrupt when a packet threshold is exceeded in one or more of the priority queues. The media access controller then drops lower priority packets in the fixed shared memory space based on the order received to guarantee that there is enough memory to store higher priority packets in the fixed shared memory space.

Abstract: General and algebraic-constructed contention-free memory mapping for parallel turbo decoding with algebraic interleave ARP (almost regular permutation) of all possible sizes. A novel means is presented in which contention-free memory mapping is truly achieved in the context of performing parallel decoding of a turbo coded signal. A novel means of performing the contention-free memory mapping is provided to ensure that any one turbo decoder (of a group of parallel arranged turbo decoders) accesses only memory (of a group of parallel arranged memories) at any given time. In doing so, access conflicts between the turbo decoders and the memories are avoided.
