Abstract: A reference ladder having a plurality of embedded, programmable discontinuity resistors for adjusting the output voltages at a plurality of output taps of the ladder. In an embodiment, each discontinuity resistor has a programmable resistance. The reference ladder is factory tested to determine the voltage outputs at a plurality of output taps. A difference between the measured output voltages and the nominal output voltages is calculated. A determination is made of optimized resistances of the discontinuity resistors in order to minimize the differences between measured and nominal output voltages. The discontinuity resistors are then programmed, with the desired resistances stored in a non-volatile memory of the reference ladder. The output of the reference ladder may be further adjusted by using a trimming network at the bottom of the ladder to add a uniform offset to all the output voltages of all the output taps.

Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed to increase a breakdown voltage of a semiconductor device. The semiconductor device includes a first heavily doped region to represent a source region. A second heavily doped region represents a drain region of the semiconductor device. A third heavily doped region represents a gate region of the semiconductor device. The semiconductor device further includes a shallow trench isolation (STI) region to increase the resistance from the drain region to the source region. The STI region includes a first side vertically aligned with a second side of the gate region. The STI region extends from the first side to a second side in contact with a second side of the drain region. The breakdown voltage of the n-type semiconductor device is directly proportional to a vertical length, or a depth, of the first side and/or the second side of the STI region.

  • Patent number: 7433660
Abstract: An iterative multistage detection system and method for orthogonally multiplexing K channels onto a signal processing chain using N orthogonal sequences of length N. The K channels include a first set of N channels and a second set of M channels (the M channels being separate and distinct from the N channels), where K=N+M. In a first iteration, interference from the first set of N channels imparted on the second set of M channels is removed from the multiplexed signal, thereby enabling the symbol values associated with the second set of M channels to be reliably estimated. In a second iteration, interference from the second set of M channels imparted on the first set of N channels is removed from the first set of N channels, thereby enabling the symbol values associated with the first set of N channels to be reliably estimated.

  • Patent number: 7434189
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide an integrated circuit (IC) in which power to input output (IO) drivers may be distributed within unused areas over macro processing circuits. This IC includes a long distance power and ground distribution network, an input output (IO) power and ground distribution network, a number of macro processing circuits, and IO circuits. The long distance power and ground distribution network electrically couples to the IO power and ground distribution network. Both the power and ground distribution networks may be located within the upper level conductive layers. IO power and ground distribution network locally supplies power and ground to IO circuits. Macro processing circuits may be located beneath the power distribution network as some macro processing circuits do not require access to upper level conductive layers. By placing these macro processing circuits beneath these power distribution networks, die size may be reduced.

  • Patent number: 7433352
Abstract: Data packets transmitted over a cable network are suppressed by hardware at the transmitting end and expanded on the receiving end. This conserves bandwidth as well as reduces the processing resource requirements in both the CM and the CMTS. An extended header element is added to a data packet that is to be transmitted over the cable network. The extended header element contains an index that is used along with the SID to access a rule. The rule is used to determine which bytes are to be suppressed at the transmitter and expanded at the receiver.

  • Patent number: 7433697
Abstract: Synchronized UWB piconets for SOP (Simultaneously Operating Piconet) performance. A common backbone (either wired or wireless) is employed that provides a common CLK (clock signal) to all of the various PNCs (piconet coordinators) of various piconets that may operate within a sufficiently close region such that interference could undesirably occur. By providing a very reliable CLK signal from a common backbone to all of the PNCs of the various piconets operating within a substantially close proximity to one another, very precise synchronization may be ensured for all of the communications performed therein. The various piconets may then even operate using TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access)—whose performance would be substantially compromised without effective synchronization. In addition, combined TFC (time frequency code) and TDMA may also be employed to support the communications therein thereby providing even another degree of orthogonality that provided by TDMA alone.

  • Patent number: 7433148
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention significantly reduce the number and complexity of processing operations to be performed. This is done by receiving the learned run out or vector A to be rotated by phase q. This phase q may be limited to a ?/4 resolution. Sine function values and cosine function values based on q are selected from a group of values comprising ?1, 0, and +1. The sine function values and cosine function values selected may then be applied to the learned run out or vector A to rotate the vector A by phase q. Because the sine and cosine values are limited to ?1, 0 and +1 many multiplication processing operations are eliminated. This greatly simplifies the processing requirements associated with phase rotating of this learned run out.

  • Patent number: 7433432
Abstract: An adaptive, reduced-complexity soft-output maximum-likelihood detector that is operable to process data by adaptively selecting a processing scheme based on a determination of signal quality. The signal quality is derived as a function of the noise, the modulation format, the channel (the communication environment), the transmit signal power and the receive signal power. If the signal quality is low, the signal is processed using a maximum likelihood detector. If, however, the signal quality is high, a simpler sub-optimal detector is used. By estimating the signal quality and choosing an appropriate detection method, the present invention ensures accurate detection of incoming data signals in a MIMO communication system while maintaining the highest possible processing speed.

  • Patent number: 7434134
Abstract: A method and a system for decoding information signals encoded in accordance with a multi-state encoding scheme and transmitted over a multi-dimensional transmission channel by computing a distance of a received word from a codeword. One-dimensional (1D) input signals are processed in a pair of symbol decoders, implemented as look-up tables, to produce a pair of 1D errors, with each representing a distance metric between the input signal and a symbol in one of two disjoint symbol-subsets. The 1D errors are combined based on the multi-state encoding scheme in order to produce a set of multi-dimensional error terms. Each of the multi-dimensional error terms corresponds to a distance between a received word and a nearest codeword.
