Patent number: 4354784Abstract: A non-silver scored metal end closure member, and an apparatus and method for forming the same, are disclosed, characterized by the provision of a continuous scoreline between the radius and central panel portions of the end. The scoreline includes, in cross-sectional profile, a horizontal flat bottom wall, and outwardly divergent outer and inner side walls. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the scoreline is contained in the upper horizontal surface of the metal end, the other side wall of the scoreline being concave and having a radius less than that of the radius portion of the metal end, the bottom wall being tangent to the outer side wall. The inner side wall comprises either a flat surface arranged at an obtuse angle of about 165.degree. relative to the bottom wall, or a concave surface tangent to the bottom wall. In another modification, the inner side wall is concave and tangent to the bottom wall, the radius of the inner side wall being at least as great as that of the outer side wall.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1980Date of Patent: October 19, 1982Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventor: Teddy M. Patent number: 4353761Abstract: A composite container is disclosed having a synthetic plastic end closure member spin-bonded to the thermoplastic synthetic plastic inner liner layer of a composite container body wall. The synthetic plastic end closure member includes annular downwardly depending inner fin and outer chime portions which are concentrically spaced to define therebetween an annular groove. One of the body and end members is rotated relative to the other member when they are in spaced vertical alignment, whereupon the members are axially displaced together to wedge the upper end of the body member into the annular groove of the end closure member. During this spin bonding process, the fin portion of the end closure member is supported against radial inward deflection, whereby the spinning frictional engagement between the fin portion of the end closure member and the inner liner layer of the body member causes softening and subsequent bonding of the fin portion to the inner liner layer.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1981Date of Patent: October 12, 1982Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventors: Stephen E. Woerz, Travis K. Canup

Patent number: 4337692Abstract: A fluid cylinder assembly comprising a cylindrical shell and movable plunger member having an annular retainer internally threaded into one end of the shell so as to limit the extensibility of the plunger from the shell, such annular retainer being specially designed so as to enable the outside diameter of the shell to be minimized without adversely affecting the performance of the cylinder assembly. The resilient fluid seal between the retainer and the shell, normally located at a position interior of the retainer threads, is instead located exterior of the threads at the end of the shell. The retainer includes a radially-projecting flange portion, exterior of the end of the shell, having a chamfered annular recess therein which encloses the end of the shell and resists any tendency of the end of the shell to expand radially when the force of the plunger is imposed upon the retainer by prestressing the flange against such expansion.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1980Date of Patent: July 6, 1982Assignee: Cascade CorporationInventors: Elie C. Patent number: 4299350Abstract: An improved composite container is disclosed including a tubular fibrous body wall having at its upper end a reversely curled portion the upper extremity of which is radially inwardly compressed in such a manner as to form an annular external locking projection by means of which a synthetic plastic closure cap may be fastened to close the container. Preferably the closure member is connected with the container by a tearable tamperproof connection including a radially inwardly directed annular rib that is locked beneath the annular body projection to maintain the closure cap on the container. A method is also disclosed for forming the container body, including the steps of radially outwardly curling the upper end of the body member, radially inwardly comressing the upper extremity of the reversely curled portion, and mounting a synthetic plastic snap-type closure member on the compressed curled end.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1979Date of Patent: November 10, 1981Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventor: Stephen E. Patent number: 4274794Abstract: A mobile lift truck for handling unpalletized loads comprising a tiltable load-carrying platform projecting forwardly from the main frame of the truck rotatably mounted so as to permit rotation of the platform about a generally vertical axis of rotation between respective rotatable positions substantially 90.degree. apart. A forwardly-facing push-pull frame having a slip sheet clamp is provided which does not rotate in unison with the platform, enabling the push frame to push loads forwardly off of the platform in both of the rotatable positions of the platform. Power-actuating circuitry is provided interconnecting the platform rotation function, push frame retraction function and slip sheet clamp release function so that the platform is prevented from rotating until the slip sheet clamp has been released and the push frame has been retracted off of the platform. Methods of application of the lift truck are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1979Date of Patent: June 23, 1981Assignee: Cascade CorporationInventor: John E. Olson

Patent number: 4261438Abstract: An extensible-contractible four-stage telescopic mast for a lift truck having a single fluid-actuated ram of low-collapsed height for high visibility which accomplishes both free lift and mast extension. The associated chain reeving of the mast provides a lesser ratio of load carriage speed to ram extension speed during free lift than during mast extension. To obtain substantially uniform speed of the load carriage throughout its lifting range, the ram assembly has a variable speed of extension substantially inversely proportional to such ratio such that ram speed is higher during free lift than during mast extension. An arrangement of the four mast sections, associated chain reeving and hydraulic conduits is provided which is especially conducive to high visibility and maximum load capacity.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1979Date of Patent: April 14, 1981Assignee: Cascade CorporationInventor: Harlan D. Olson

Patent number: 4259885Abstract: Portable cutting apparatus is disclosed for turning either the outer peripheral surface of a cylindrical workpiece, such as a journal, or the annular end face of a tubular workpiece, such as the flanged mouth of a retort or the like. A hollow drum, which is rotatably driven around a fixed shaft, carries a change speed gear box for reciprocating a tool holder also carried by the drum. The tool holder is an interchangeable attachment for the drum and depending on the attachment used, the tool is movable in planes either normal to or concentric about the axis of rotation of the drum. The gear box is geared to the fixed shaft and therefore driven by rotation of the drum.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1979Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventor: Carl L. Patent number: 4258859Abstract: An improved scored metal end closure member for composite containers and the like is disclosed, together with the method and apparatus for forming the same, characterized in that a fully or partially removable panel portion is defined in the central panel portion by a scoreline of novel no-fin configuration. The scoreline--which is formed in one horizontal surface of the central panel portion by a truncated wedge score indenting device--has a generally trapezoidal configuration including a flat bottom wall, and generally divergent side walls. The opposite horizontal surface of the central panel portion is stepped to define a region of reduced thickness that extends from a location opposite one edge of the scoreline bottom wall in a direction away from the scoreline. Consequently, during progressive removal of the removable panel portion, the formation of sharp fins or projections on the residual lip remaining on the metal end is avoided.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1980Date of Patent: March 31, 1981Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventor: Teddy M. Westphal
