Abstract: Dyeing with disperse dyes is made more uniform when there is used as a levelling agent a branched polyester which has an apparent average molecular weight of from about 600 to about 5,000, disperses itself in water, and is essentially an ester-linked combination of hydrocarbyloxy groups and carboxyl-derived acyl groups, the groups being linked together as a branched chain by the ester linkages and relative to the carboxy-derived acyl groups the polyester contains from about 5 to about 50 mol.% of COOH or COOM groups and less than 5 mol.% of SO.sub.3 M groups, wherein M denotes the cation of an alkali metal, the ammonium ion or the cationic radical of an organic amine, the number of branches on an interesterified group being not over three and at least 50 mol.% of the hydrocarbyloxy groups are in diethylene glycol or triethylene glycol groups.

Abstract: Water-soluble polyester having an apparent molecular weight between about 600 and about 5,000 and a SO.sub.3 M group content between about 5 to about 40 mol percent based on the number of mols of dicarboxylic and/or polycarboxylic acids esterified in the polyester, and an at least trifunctional alcohol and/or an at least trifunctional carboxylic acid content between about 1 to about 40 mol percent based on the number of mols of dicarboxylic and/or polycarboxylic acids esterified in the polyester so that the polyester is correspondingly branched and M denotes a cation of an alkali metal, the ammonium ion or the cationic radical of an organic amine. The improved polyester is particularly suited as a levelling agent in the disperse dyeing of polyester fibers or the like.

Abstract: Electrolyte-free etherified methylolaminotriazines are directly prepared by reacting together in the absence of electrolyte, the aminotriazine, formaldehyde and certain ether-alcohols. When the formaldehyde to aminotriazine mol ratio is sufficiently high and the etherification sufficiently extensive, the resulting products are particularly desirable in that they are quite stable and thermoset to exceptionally elastic, cured products having high electrical, moisture, and temperature resistance.
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of esters of aromatic sulphonic acids and aromatic aminohydroxy compounds, of the formula Ih.sub.2 n--a--o--so.sub.2 --b (i)comprising reacting an aromatic aminohydroxy compound of the formula IIh.sub.2 n--a--oh (ii)having a pK.sub.a value of from 8.5 to 10.1, with a sulphochloride of the formula IIIcl--SO.sub.2 --B (III)whereinA is phenylene, substituted phenylene, naphthylene or substituted naphthylene,B is phenyl, substituted phenyl, naphthyl or substituted naphthyl, and both A and B are free from --COOH and --SO.sub.3 H substituents; The reaction taking place in a reaction medium consisting essentially of water and a water-immiscible organic solvent for the sulphochloride,At a temperature of from 0.degree. to 95.degree. C., at a pH which is determined from and associated with the pK.sub.a value of said aromatic aminohydroxy compound of formula II by the equationpK.sub.a -pH=0.5 to -1.5,and in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst.

Abstract: A .beta.,.beta.,.beta.-trihalo-.alpha.-hydroxyethyl (e.g. --CHOH--CCl.sub.3) group is introduced into a 2,6-dihydroxy pyridine. The 3-formyl-4-methyl-2,6-dihydroxy pyridine produced by splitting off haloform from the trihalohydroxyethyl product, is a desirable intermediate for the making of dyes and other products, and the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of the formyl compound are more stable forms of this intermediate.
Abstract: Conditioning and water-repellent compositions containing agents for cellulose-containing textiles or leather comprising sulphonylureas of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl or alkenyl having 10-30 carbon atoms; B is a member selected from the group comprising ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is hydrogen or alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms and n is 2, 3 or 4;And X is .beta.-halogenoalkyl or alkenyl with 2 to 4 carbon atoms each. Also disclosed are novel sulphonylureas per se and a method of use for sulphonylureas as conditioning and water repellent compositions.
