Abstract: A starter strip shingle of a given vertical width is provided, having a severance line, from which a severance portion of the starter strip shingle may be removed, somewhat reducing the vertical width of the starter strip shingle, such that the installer of roofing material has an option to use full width starter strip shingles, or reduced width starter strip shingles, from the same package of uniform width starter strip shingles, to thereby enable a feathering of roofing shingles applied thereover, by means of a gentle transition zone, to avoid tears and punctures of the roofing shingles. Sealant areas on the starter strip shingles may be synchronized with the spacing and sizes of tabs of roofing shingles applied thereover, such that the sealant areas will always be under tabs of roofing shingles that are applied thereover, and not fall between the tabs into slots thereof.

Abstract: The invention relates to plastics that comprise a polymer resin and a mineralized (i.e., de-metallized) ash as a filler. The mineralized ash-filled plastics exhibit improved rheological and physical properties, relative to plastics made using other fillers. The plastics can contain a variety of other fillers and additives. The invention further relates to methods of making and using the plastics.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of producing a plank product and related components having a controllable and realistic wood-grain appearance, the planks and related components having at least one accent color, the method including the steps of: a) introducing into an extruder a powdered or pelletized base material and accent color pellets, the base material containing less than about 75% by weight wood flour, and having a vicat softening temperature, the accent color pellets (i) having a higher vicat softening temperature than said base material, and (ii) including a styrene polymer having a high vicat softening temperature and a melt flow index of greater than or equal to 1.
Abstract: A cladding product which includes a panel having at least one panel section and at least one longitudinal recess. The longitudinal recess includes a first channel portion adjacent to the panel section and a second channel portion adjacent to the first channel portion. The second channel portion includes at least one edge portion that extends wider than the first channel portion at a distal end of the first channel portion. The second channel portion includes a plurality of ventilation openings formed on the at least one edge portion.
Abstract: A synthetic roofing shingle or tile is provided, in which a core material is formed, of generally less expensive material, and with a skin material provided, disposed thereabout, with the skin material being generally of greater expense and having desirable weather-withstanding qualities.

Abstract: A phenol-formaldehyde resole resin for use as a binder for glass fibers is acidified to a pH of 3 or less after base-catalyzed resinification. An increase in actual solids is observed compared with neutralized resin. Phenol-formaldehyde-urea-ammonia resins are surprisingly stable at pH 3 with desirable cure profiles.
Abstract: The invention relates to compositions and methods whereby tannin staining of a natural or synthetic lumber product can be inhibited or prevented. The compositions and methods described herein can be used in conjunction with compositions and methods for inhibiting microbial growth on or in lumber products.
