Abstract: A dual compartment magnetic switch interposed between a hand held electrical appliance and its electrical power input. The magnetic switch enables electrical power to be totally insulated from the electrical components within the appliance so that when the appliance is in the off position, user safety is enhanced.

Abstract: A temporary or semipermanent hair coloring composition comprising an aqueous vehicle having incorporated therein a hair coloring component, said composition also containing as a cosolvent for the hair colorant from less than about 15% by weight of a diol selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbon diols having from 5 to 8 carbon atoms and bis (hydroxy-alkyl) cyclohexanes having from 7 to 14 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A heatable hair brush capable of being utilized for either curling or straightening hair as desired. The hair brush is also capable of being molded with integral bristles in a relatively simple two-part mold. The hair brush has a hairwinding portion provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced bristles arranged in a pair of diametrically opposed sets of parallel bristle rows, the central row of each set being radially extended and the rows on either side of the central row being parallel thereto.

Abstract: A substituted m-aminophenol coupler useful in hair dyeing having the formula ##STR1## and acid addition salts thereof wherein x and y are selected from the group consisting of halogen and the groups OR of which R is the same or different alkyl, aminoalkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups, at least one of x or y being a group OR and a process for preparing these compounds.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for conducting various experiments on skin samples under simulated in vivo conditions. The apparatus includes, in one embodiment, a platform for supporting the skin sample over a chamber containing liquid at a controlled temperature. An activating probe is attached to the surface of the skin sample and is activated in a predetermined manner. The probe is also used to measure the resulting deformations of the skin sample to determine the visco-elastic properties of the skin under various temperature and humidity conditions. The apparatus also includes an access part for applying selected topical solutions to the skin sample. In another embodiment, the apparatus includes additional elements for enclosing the air space above a skin sample and for measuring the transepidermal water loss through the sample.

Abstract: An elongated flexible hair curler having a central core molded within a pliable viscoelastic polymer heat-retaining body. The hair curler comprises a generally elongated structure having rounded ends and is capable of being bent into a plurality of positions including being bent through an angle of substantially 180.degree. back upon itself in order to retain a hair tress wound thereon curler without the aid of hair clips. The heat retaining body is capable of being heated by an external means to a predetermined temperature and able to retain the heat for a predetermined time in order to facilitate the setting of curls in hair.

Abstract: A process of imparting antistatic surface modifications to protein fibers by treating them with a polymeric high molecular weight quanternary ammonium salt having long chain organo groups as side chains which contain at least 12 carbon atoms in the chain.

Abstract: Novel sulfur containing nitroamino benzene dyes of formula: ##STR1## and salts thereof wherein (a) R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, polyhydroxyalky, aminoalkyl, monoalkylamioalkyl and dialkylaminoalkyl,wherein(b) n is 0, 1 or 2, and wherein(c) the group ##STR2## occupies a position that is meta or para to the group-NHR.sub.1 ; a process for synthesizing these compounds and their use as direct dyeing hair dyes are being disclosed.

Abstract: A shock hazard protector for protecting small appliances from the presence of water. The shock hazard protector utilizes a fusible wire link mechanically connecting two opposing resilient electrical contacts. A triac is connected to a sensor circuit and, upon the occurrence of water in predetermined parts of the appliance, the triac fires and causes a current to be passed through the fusible link to melt the link, release the resilient electrical contacts and open both power line simultaneously.

Abstract: A hair appliance has a hair winding portion extending axially from the end of a handle covered by a flexible sleeve member adapted to be depressed in order to activate a movable part of the hair appliance. The hair appliance is of relatively uniform cross-section along its length and in the case of a curling iron provided with a hair retaining clip biased adjacent the barrel of the curling iron, the clip is provided with a longitudinal extension aligned with the body of the clip, with the extension overlying a recess in the handle and under the flexible sleeve member. The clip is opened by squeezing or depressing the flexible sleeve member to move the extension into the recess. In the case of a curling brush having a rotatable barrel, a similar construction results in the barrel locking mechanism being situated under the flexible sleeve member so that depression of the latter operates the locking mechanism.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for artificially bleaching or lightening hair by exposing the hair to intense radiation of artificial light. The light is typically from a laser or flashlamp source and provides adequate intensity and power during the lifetime of the excited melanin molecule in the hair to substantially destroy at least some of the melanin molecules in the hair.

Abstract: A neutralizing and conditioning composition for the hair includes an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide and an amino-functional polymeric silicone additive for imparting durable conditioning benefits to the hair. A method is provided for neutralizing and conditioning hair which has been subjected to a waving or straightening treatment with keratin reducing agent by applying the new composition to the treated hair.

Abstract: An electrically heatable hair wrapper capable of being cut to any predetermined length from a flat, elongated, flexible base carrying a plurality of parallel resistance heating circuits. The circuits extend along the length of the base in a periodic serpentine pattern with the opposite ends of each pattern being electrically connected to continuous parallel buses extending along the longitudinal edges of the base. The flexible base is provided with indicia for indicating where the base and buses may be cut intermediate each adjacent pair of serpentine patterns so as not to destroy the continuity of the selected resistance heating circuits. A bendable, shape-retaining, cuttable wire along each longitudinal edge of the base outwardly of the parallel buses holds the wrapper in any desired shape. A longitudinally flexible flap integrally formed with at least one longitudinal edge of the base is foldable over the base to retain a hair tress between the base and flap during use of the wrapper.

Abstract: A process for dyeing keratinaceous substances such as hair, wool, skin etc., which comprises contacting the same with a composition containing an aromatic azide or azidoindole component having the formula ##STR1## wherein X is hydroxyl, alkoxyl, NR'R", in which R' and R" are independently of each other hydrogen, alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, and if R' is H or alkyl, then R" can be further carbamylalkyl, mesylaminoalkyl, acylaminoalkyl, sulfoalkyl, piperidinoalkyl or morpholinoalkyl, R' and R" can also form with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached a piperidine or morpholine ring, R is hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, halogen, nitro, cyano or alkoxyl, W, Y and Z are independently of each other H or R', wherein all of the aforementioned alkyl moieties can have between 1 and 8 carbon atoms, and then exposing the contacted keratinaceous material to a suitable light source for sufficient time to develop the color.
