  • Publication number: 20030032833
Abstract: Continuous processes for forming cyanoacrylate from polycyanoacrylate include stripping a solvent from a reaction mass; cracking a polymer in the reaction mass to form a cracked cyanoacrylate monomer and residue substances; and distilling the cracked cyanoacrylate monomer to produce a cyanoacrylate monomer product. These steps can be performed in short-path, wiped-film evaporators. Polycyanoacrylate used in the processes can be formed using cyanoacetate produced by processes for continuously producing cyanoacetate by forming a higher homologue cyanoacetate from a lower homologue cyanoacetate. The cyanoacetate can be formed in short-path, wiped-film evaporators.

  • Publication number: 20020192107
Abstract: A medical procedure kit incorporates one or more surgical tools necessary to perform at least part of a medical procedure, along with a container having a quantity of a medical adhesive. Medical adhesives are useful as an alternate or an adjunct to surgical sutures and/or staples in wound closure, as well as for covering and protecting surface wounds such as lacerations, abrasions, burns, stomatitis, sores, minor cuts and scrapes, and other wounds. As such, the inclusion of such an adhesive into a composite medical procedure kit can be of great assistance to a medical doctor or surgeon by providing in single kit form, tools necessary to complete many medical procedures, without having to use multiple procedure kits. The adhesive may be independently sterilized and wrapped from the other surgical tools of the resultant kit, and then associated into kit form, or assembled and sterilized together as a unitary kit.

  • Patent number: 6494896
Abstract: A hand-held applicator delivers liquid or semi-liquid compositions, such as adhesives, to an internal tissue or organ in an even and controlled manner. The applicator includes a pump, a tubular extension that is thin enough to pass through an endoscopic pathway or trocar, a proximal end of the tubular extension being sealingly connected to the pump, and an applicator tip that attaches to the distal end of the tubular extension. The tip includes the liquid and the pump pumps the liquid to the internal tissue in an even and controlled manner without contact of the liquid by the pump. The pump is preferably a micropipetter that includes a hand-held portion having a hand-actuatable plunger that does not come in direct, physical contact with the liquid to be dispensed. The composition may be an adhesive such as an alpha-cyanoacrylate. The device may further include a wound closure device including at least two closure pins extending from the distal end of the tubular extension.

  • Publication number: 20020185396
Abstract: A single-use applicator assembly for dispensing and applying a polymerizable monomeric adhesive material includes: a base portion having at least one sealed compartment; a polymerizable monomeric adhesive material contained in the compartment; an applicator at least partially disposed in the compartment such that a tip of the applicator is proximate the adhesive material. The at least one sealed compartment may comprise first and second sealed compartments that are separated with the polymerizable monomeric adhesive material contained in the first compartment and the applicator at least partially disposed in the second compartment. Alternatively, the first and second compartments may be open to each other. In such case, the applicator assembly may further comprise a plunger that defines the second compartment and that is movable into the first compartment to displace the adhesive material into the second compartment. A kit can include multiple applicator assemblies that are separate or frangibly connected.
