  • Patent number: 4345288
Abstract: A solid state overload relay protective apparatus for electric motors which includes not only the overload feature, but the additional features of underload and single phase protection. Small current transformers for sensing the current flow in each phase of the motor are utilized, like those found in the ground fault sensing art because a current-to-voltage converter circuit reflects a short circuit back to the secondary of the transformers. The signal from the current transformers which is proportional to the sensed current in the motor is fed through the converter, a scaling and summing amplifier adjustable for a wide range of motor full load currents, an ideal diode peak detector, a time integrator amplifier, to one input of a comparator circuit having a trip reference voltage signal at another input. The comparator provides an output signal to a transistorized trip level circuit that deenergizes a coil of an overload relay opening its contacts and interrupting power to the motor.

  • Patent number: 4345310
Abstract: The present invention deals with a flight control process and device for an aircraft approach and landing. More in particular, the invention in use simulates ILS by using an infrared radiation source at the desired landing site. The invention comprises the steps of determining an axis defined by the infrared radiation source, forming a predetermined guide slope line with respect to the horizontal and oriented according to a determined approach magnetic heading, recording the aircraft position with respect to the source, determining the angular deviations in azimuth and in elevation of the sighting axis with respect to the said glide slope line, and operating the aircraft flight controls to return said deviations to zero.

  • Patent number: 4343567
Abstract: A metal anchor tube is driven into the ground or blacktop and defines a cavity which receives the lower end portion of an elongated cylindrical flexible marking tube extruded from a resilient plastics material. The upper end portion of the marking tube supports a light reflecting member which may be in the form of a reflective sheet located within the marking tube and visible through an opening or window within the tube. In one embodiment, the lower end portion of the marking tube is releasably coupled to the anchor tube by an internal wedge plug which compresses the marking tube against the anchor tube and is inserted and removed by means of a tool. In another embodiment, the releasable coupling is formed by an anchor tube having tabs which project inwardly into corresponding holes within the flexible marking tube.

  • Patent number: 4343904
Abstract: Animal cells are grown in a vertically disposed cylindrical vessel containing a stack of parallel spaced-apart discs inclined at least 5.degree. from the horizontal and mounted to a rotatable axial shaft. The vessel is closed by a top plate having a plurality of inlets and a bottom plate with an outlet, and contains an external pumping loop for circulating contents of the vessel from the bottom to the top of the vessel. Growing of the cells is carried out by substantially filling the vessel with a mixture of animal cells and growth medium, allowing the cells to settle on the disc surfaces and then rotating the axial shaft at a speed of at least 5 rpm while continuously circulating the vessel contents from the bottom to the top of the vessel. This process and apparatus provides efficient mixing and ensures a homogeneous system within the vessel.

  • Patent number: 4341442
Abstract: In manufacturing optical transmission filters having double-refraction elements, extreme care is usually necessary to provide the desired phase delay. To simplify the manufacturing process while still achieving accurate phase delay, a filter is provided with at least one double-refraction element comprising a single-mode optical filter mounted between polarizers. The double refraction of the optical fiber is sufficiently weak so that the .lambda. length within which light beams propagating with orthogonal polarization states in the fiber are mutually delayed by 2.pi., is at least 1 cm. In one embodiment, the optical fiber comprises alternating sections which produce linear double refraction with sections which produce elliptical double refraction.
