Abstract: Process and apparatus for providing digital data indicative of the contour of a leaf-like article, e.g. a tobacco leaf, and the flaws (holes) that it may comprise, from a video signal composed of image lines. The video signal is coded by comparing same with thresholds so as to detect transitions. The number n of points pertaining to a hole is compared with a threshold n.sub.1, firstly within a line X, then in successive lines X, X+1, and the code is converted to "flaw" when n.gtoreq.n.sub.1. Only when they precede a transition, the coded signals are stored in a memory in the order of appearance of the lines. The stored signals are readout in the opposite order, whereby all the codes pertaining to a given flaw can be rendered uniform and the codes pertaining to unsignificant flaws can be suppressed.

Abstract: A double-acting hydraulic jack has a cylinder, a piston dividing the cylinder into first and second chambers of variable volume on opposite sides of the piston, and a piston rod with first and second passages opening into the first and second chambers respectively. The piston is moved by supply of pressurized fluid to one passage or the other. An end-of-stroke device is provided to relieve the high pressure applied to the first chamber when the piston comes to the end of its stroke under the action of the pressure fluid supplied to that chamber through the first passage. The device comprises a bore in the piston. The axis of the bore is parallel to the piston axis. The bore contains a small moveable rod urged to project from the bore into the second chamber by high fluid pressure taken from the first passage to move a sliding sleeve in the bore. This sleeve movement is transmitted to urge the small rod and also blocks a third passage leading to the bore from the first passage.

Abstract: An electric circuit breaker including a U-shaped bimetal operably associated with a trip crossbar to effect rotation of the crossbar and subsequent opening of breaker contacts in response to heating of the bimetal to a predetermined temperature by the passage of an electrical current of a selected magnitude therethrough. The bimetal provides self-contained adjustment through the use of a calibration screw threaded into the lower leg of the bimetal which exerts force through an insulating member to the upper leg of the bimetal permitting ready calibration of the bimetal according to ampere rating of the particular circuit breaker.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a blade profile for rotary wing of an aircraft, comprising, between the leading edge and the trailing edge, a convex upper surface and a non-concave lower surface, wherein, at the point of maximum curvature of the leading edge, the radius of curvature Ro is approximately defined by the expression Ro=1.7 C. e.sub.max.sup.2, in which C represents the chord and e.sub.max the relative thickness of said profile and the portion of lower surface adjacent the leading edge extends to about 20% of the chord from said leading edge and presents a very small general curvature decreasing continuously in the direction of the trailing edge up to the point of minimum curvature of the lower surface. The invention is more particularly applicable to obtaining rotary wings, for example for helicopters, capable of very high performances both when hovering, and in high speed flight, as well as during manoeuvres.

Abstract: A control blood platelet preparation containing a population of platelets of known count range, electronic volume and electronic volume size distribution is ued to check the threshold setting calibrations of an electronic particle counter. The control preparation preferably contains blood platelets from whole blood taken from animal species which are non-injectious with respect to human hepatitis, ideally animals of the bovine and porcine species.
Abstract: An apparatus for separating objects of a particular kind from other objects, e.g. stones etc. from potatoes during harvesting, wherein the objects fall in a stream past a detector for objects of said particular kind and, after detection of an object, a separating member positioned downstream of the detector is moved in a manner in dependence on a physical dimension of the detected object so that objects of said particular kind are directed in a first direction and other objects are directed in another direction. The physical dimension may determine a time of movement of the separating member and/or whether the separating member should be moved at all.

Abstract: A headlamp washing assembly including spray nozzles disposed above automotive headlamps. A liquid storage reservoir stores cleaning liquid to be dispensed by the nozzles and is disposed above the nozzles to provide a gravity feed of the liquid from the reservoir to the nozzles. A gas storage tank stores gas supplied to it from a source and supplies the pressurized gas to force the liquid through the nozzles. A solenoid actuated valve is in communication with the liquid storage reservoir, the gas storage tank, the source of pressurized gas and the nozzles through appropriate conduits. The valve has a first position for charging the gas storage tank from the source of gas while simultaneously charging the metering conduits leading to the nozzles with liquid from the liquid storage tank. The valve has a second position for subjecting the metering conduits to gas from the gas storage tank to force liquid through the conduits and out the nozzles.
Abstract: 7-[5-oxo-3-hydroxy-2-(3-substituted)-3-hydroxypropyl)-1-cyclopentene]-hepta noic acids having the following general formula ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen or hydroxyl, R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are independently hydrogen or methyl, and R.sub.2 is --(CH.sub.2)n-Y where n is an integer from 0 through 4 inclusive, and Y is phenyl, or a cycloalkyl group having 4 to 6 carbon atoms. Said acids as well as certain derivatives thereof are useful as nasal decongestants, inhibitors of gastric secretion, inhibitors of platelet aggregation, blood additives, smooth muscle stimulators, hypotensive agents, labor inducers, and in controlling ovulation.
Abstract: An improved syringe assembly is provided in which a double-looped ring member comprising an index finger loop and a stem loop, permits the index finger of one hand to be inserted in the index finger loop so as to actuate withdrawal of the plunger of the syringe. Utilization of the index finger allows the exertion of a withdrawal force on the plunger along a much flatter arc than if the thumb of the same hand is used. The different articulation of the index finger of a person's hand, compared with the articulation of the thumb, allows even an elderly person to utilize the syringe assembly with one hand, without binding the plunger in the barrel of the syringe. The double-looped ring member is made of wire stock, is removably positioned on the stem of the syringe, and the stem loop is necessarily movable with respect to the stem of the plunger. Further, though the wire loops are stiff, they are manually deformable.
Abstract: An electromagnetic stepping motor has a stator assembly comprising two pieces. These two pieces are assembled to each other by a protrusion of cylindrical shape of one of the pieces which engages in a recess, of corresponding shape, in an extension of the other piece. The two pieces, which are of elongated general shape, are disposed parallel to each other with said one piece constituting the core of an energizing coil of the motor. The coil can be wound directly on to the piece of the stator constituting the core of the coil.
Abstract: The invention relates to a novel process for making phenyl fluoroacrylate monomer. The monomer is obtained by reaction of a fluoroacrylic salt with an halogenating agent, followed by condensation of the fluoroacryloyl halogenide with phenol and recovery of the phenyl fluoroacrylate. The obtained monomer is applicable to the manufacture of transparent polymers of high thermal stability.
