Abstract: A lamp socket provided with resilient pawls spaced about its periphery, and a resilient member acting against the central stud. The pawls retract with the passage of a lamp into the socket and once the lamp is inserted, the pawls and resilient member apply pressure against the sides and bottom of the base to hold the lamp in place. Electrical contact is established through the pawls on the periphery of the lamp base and by the resilient member acting on the central stud.

Abstract: The spool carrier of a double twist textile twister is held in space by connecting it to two rotatable assemblies which rotate respectively about a centered axis and an oblique axis. The obliquely oriented assembly is connected to the spool carrier by means of bearings in a bearing housing, the exterior surface of which has two oppositely facing, transversely oriented convex cylindrical surfaces. A base on the spool carrier has depending portions with planar interior faces which engage the convex cylindrical surfaces with a minimum of play.
Abstract: A method and device for reducing the noise produced in a turbo-machine by e interaction of the blades of a ring of rotor blades and the vanes of a ring of stator vanes by the creation of a counter-noise of opposed phase. This is achieved by the injection of a fluid into the flow passage of the machine in which the blades and vanes are located. The injection is carried out through orifices located on stationary parts of the machine and equal in number to the vanes of rings of stator vanes, the flow through the orifices being modulated at the frequency of the noise to be reduced and with a phase difference which increases in an incremental manner from one orifice to the next. The phase of the modulated flows injected through the orifices is simultaneously regulated so that the acoustic waves created by the flows are substantially in opposition, with respect to phase, to those of the noise to be reduced.

Abstract: A flexible, fabric cover for automobile batteries is provided and includes a hinged top portion having a side extension extending partially down one side thereby providing an enlarged top opening for positioning a battery within the jacket. The top includes sections to accommodate top or side mounted battery terminals which may extend through the sections for attachment to battery cables. The jacket includes outer cover members joined at each of its four corners by a thin seam which forms a rigidifying rib to allow the jacket to stand upright. A fiber glass insulation is contained within the walls of the cover providing soft, puffed walls which fit snugly about a multitude of different size batteries. The fiberglass insulation may include a foil backing to provide added stiffness, improved rigidity, and better thermal insulating properties to the battery cover. The method is directed to the manner of manufacturing to provide puffed sides and stiffening seams at each corner.
Abstract: A Power Factor Monitoring and Control System for controlling the quality of a spot weld made in the automotive industry on assembly line welders. The quality and strength of a spot weld can be correlated to a drop in resistance during the fusion process. Rather than measuring this resistive drop at the welding electrodes by attaching external sensing means thereto, the control system of the present invention makes use of the phenomenon that a resistive drop also causes a change in the total load power factor further resulting in a change to the current extinction angle of a weld half cycle. By determining the amount of increase or decrease that has occurred in the current extinction angle during a weld or a group of welds, a basis for the control of the welding heat is obtained.
Abstract: A method of preparing a surface of refraction of a progressively variable power ophthalmic lens, in which a first family of surfaces S.sub.1 having predetermined optical characteristics is determined within a given system of rederence. Within the same system of reference a second family of surfaces S.sub.2 having other predetermined characteristics is determined, each surfaces S.sub.1 of the first family is associated with each surfaces S.sub.2 and their curves of intersection C and D are determined. Among the pairs of surfaces S.sub.1 S.sub.2 is selected that one whose curves C and D provide therebetween a corridor respectively at least 15 and 18 mm wide in the intermediate vision zone Z.sub.2 ' and in the near vision zone Z.sub.3 '. The refractive surface S of the ophthalmic lens is selected so as to have the part of the surface S of the selected pair which is between the curves C and D, and the part of the surface S.sub.2 of the selective pair which is outside curves C and D.

Abstract: Screen printing stencils are prepared by affixing to a printing screen substrate an indicia-defining, ultraviolet-sensitive film and cross-linking the film by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The coating compositions used to form the film comprise copolyacrylate/polyurethane block copolymers, in which the copolyacrylate blocks are copolymers of at least one hydroxy-containing acrylate and at least one acrylate or methacrylate which may be partially substituted with bromine, ultraviolet initiators and cross-linking monomers. Screen printing stencils are provided which are compatible with both water-based and oil-based inks. The disclosed screen printing stencils are used in improved screen-printing methods.

Abstract: Low antimony alloys of lead are used for casting electrode supports in lead accumulators. They include less than 4% antimony by weight to avoid various poisoning effects of antimony on the electrochemical processes involved. Such alloys tend to have grains of excessive size which can lead to brittle castings. To reduce the grain size the present invention includes an additive constituted by a rare earth or a mixture of rare earths, e.g. misch metal at between 0.001% and 1% by weight, and preferably at 0.2%. The invention also provides an electrode support cast from the alloy, an electrode including such a support and a lead acid battery including such electrodes.
Abstract: Mode coupling using grating of ridges and furrows to curve the fibre along a zig-zag path are associated with an index matcher which surrounds the fibre. The average axis of the zig-zag fibre coincides that of the matcher. Light travels along lines all at the same angle to the axis of the matcher and pass through via a conical optical end surface thereof. The optical surface converts the said rays into a parallel beam for coupling with large aperture optical means such as a photo-cell or a LED.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the alignment of two submerged pipe sections and to an apparatus for performing this method. The invention comprises the use of two lifters for lifting the pipe sections to be joined together until their ends are substantially parallel. A liner is lowered with slightly negative buoyancy up to the pipe sections and above their ends which are to be joined together. It is fixed to said section by its clamping means and is made to bear freely on the sea bed via retractable feet permitting the lateral sliding of the liner. The final alignment phase of the pipe section is obtained by the clamping means of the liner and from inside the welding chamber in which are located the ends of said pipe sections.
Abstract: Fibre-retaining grooves are formed in-between a set of fibre locating pins (M) laid side by side. The pins and a base plane (4) on which they are laid are made of hard, rigid material. Guidance for connection and disconnection is provided by guide pins (G1 to G4) of larger diameter which are therefore robust enough to stand up to handling. The guide pins are in direct contact with the locating pins in order to ensure positional accuracy.

Abstract: A fluid distributor for use in ion exchange vessel assemblies contain ion exchange resins, particularly fixed-bed assemblies. The distributor includes a hub containing a central fluid passage and at least two sets of laterally disposed, fluid-distributing conduits. One of the sets of lateral conduits has holes screened by a fine, resin-retaining mesh. A remotely-controllable valve assembly disposed in the hub regulates flow between the hub and the sets of lateral conduits, so that flow between the screened conduits and the hub may be shut off. The hub also includes means for adjusting the relative rate of fluid flow through the sets of lateral conduits.
