Abstract: A thrust bearing/coupling component for use in scroll-type apparatus which may be a compressor, expander, fluid pump or vacuum pump. The resulting apparatus is particularly suited for use as auxiliary equipment in automotive power systems. The component of this invention comprises rotating or oscillating load carrying members, preferably ball bearings, confined within facing indentations cut in the orbiting scroll member end plate surface and an associated surface in a member stationary with respect to the orbiting scroll member. The thrust bearing/coupling component couples the stationary and orbiting scroll members in a predetermined angular relationship and it may be used to carry either expansive or compressive axial loads on the scroll members to achieve efficient radial sealing of the moving scroll fluid pockets while controlling surface wearing so that the scroll apparatus may be operated for an extended period of time without servicing.
Abstract: This invention involves an adjustable divider for vending machine helix discharge units. The units are used to store and dispense packaged objects such as chip products, candy, mints, chewing gum, candy bars, cigarettes, cigars, etc. The unit basically comprises a large rotatable helix dispensing spindle having a central divider within the convolutions of the helix which can be adjusted from horizontal to vertical and which divides the helix into separate side by side compartments. The size of the compartments is determined by the position of the center divider, the two compartments being largest when the divider is vertical and smallest when it is horizontal. The compartments are varied in size to accommodate different size packages.
Abstract: Medallion-like articles for jewelry, decorative ornamentation and product identification, instrument panel light lenses and methods and apparatus for manufacturing same are disclosed. A medallion-like article for decorative or identification is formed by applying an uncured radiation curable polymer to an indicia bearing surface in a quantity sufficient to form a convex upper surface by means of its surface tension and then irradiating the polymer to effect its cure. Use of a flexible substrate, such as a vinyl or polyester film, upon which embossed indicia was formed, provides a flexible medallion which may be adhesively bonded to a contoured, non-planar surface. Upward curling of the medallion during cure is prevented by supporting the medallion on a water cooled platen during irradiation. A flexible, transparent lamp lense having a convex frontal surface is also formed by the ultraviolet cured photopolymer which is adhesively bonded adjacent to the lamp to form its lense.
Abstract: The invention provides an agglomeration apparatus comprising an agglomeration chamber, a distributor for particles to be agglomerated feeding said chamber, means for projecting a stream of moistening fluid onto the particles and into the chamber, a fixed obstacle generally conical in shape positioned in the chamber in the path followed by the particles and in the axis of the stream of fluid and means for collecting and drying the agglomerates obtained.Preferably the obstacle is formed by a cone and a frustum placed one on top of the other, the angle at the apex of the cone being smaller than that of the frustum.

Abstract: A device for producing an electric discharge in a flat-plate transmission line. The device includes at least a first electrode (8), a second electrode (9) opposite the first electrode and passing through a hole (5) in the transmission line (1). With this arrangement it is possible to avoid deposits of metal particles building up on the edges of the hole and eventually shorting together opposite sides of the transmission line.Such flat-plate transmission lines are used in particular in nitrogen laser generators.

Abstract: Apparatus for machining, polishing and/or smoothing workpieces having curved surfaces such as optical or ophthalmic lenses. A bearing head maintains a tool against a workpiece. Pressure is applied by a pneumatic piston and cylinder unit for establishing contact pressure between the workpiece and the tool. An eccentric drive mechanism including a compound table generates relative displacement between the workpiece and the tool. The pneumatic piston and cylinder unit actually forms part of the tool holder spindle. The cylinder or piston rod of the unit is provided with a tool holder block mounting the tool and the other of the piston rod or cylinder is attached to the drive mechanism. The bearing head has a freely rotating position and a locked position preventing rotation.

Abstract: A hub is disclosed for mounting the spindle of a rotary tool, particularly a grinding or polishing wheel for ophthalmic lenses. The hub comprises a cylindrical bore and a plurality of radial centering arms arranged around the bore with their free ends lying in a common circle concentric with the axis of the bore. The centering arms each have a hinge or pivot which may be formed by a portion of reduced section at their bases. The pivot or hinge axes of the centering arms are tangent to another common circle concentric with the bore. Each of the centering arms is of elastically deformable construction fixed, or formed in one piece, with the rest of the hub. The hub is divided by a radial groove into a rigid, one-piece part and a deformable flange formed by the centering arms. A tightening ring with a preferably planar thrust or engagement face is adapted to apply an axial force against the centering arms so that they come into retaining engagement with the spindle.

Abstract: The invention relates to a gas laser which comprises a flat plate transmission line, for laser excitation formed by an insulating plate (1) placed between two charged metal plates (2,3,7). The line also includes a semi-conductor layer (13) disposed on a surface of the insulating plate to reduce progressively the surface electric field on the insulating plate, from the edge (14) of the metal plate (2,3) to the edge (16) of the insulating plate. Application to remote detection of polluting gases in the atmosphere.
Abstract: A method of marking an ophthalmic lens of organic material and the lens so marked. A marking substance containing an optical brightener which is a derivative of benzoxazolyls stilbenes, or benzotriazoles is mixed with a suitable binder and solvent and applied to a surface of the lens to be marked by thermal transfer from a transfer support. The marking substance is shaped to the desired configuration either when applied to the transfer support or by a mask defining the mark or indicia to be applied. Heat is applied to the marking substance and the lens which sublimes the optical brightener which then penetrates into the organic material of the lens to be anchored therein. The resultant indicia or mark provides a permanent marking of the lens and is only visible in ultra-violet light.

Abstract: An air supported turntable assembly comprises a rotatable member having a center pin thereon and a stationary member secured to a base plate of a record player. One member is made in a frustoconical or conical configuration with its axis aligned with the axis of the center pin. The other member is made with a frustoconical or conical recess which is complementary to the configuration of the one member. The recess receives the one member with its axis aligned with the axis of the center pin. A plurality of orifices are formed in the inclined portion of the stationary member to discharge air uniformly toward the inclined portion of the rotatable member. The arrangement is effective in preventing any off-center movement of the turntable in operation.
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for handling signature bundles. The apparatus includes an inverted U-shaped frame with legs rotatably carrying clamping pads. The frame has a fluid-operated ram thereon for moving one leg toward and away from the other. One clamping pad is connected to a driven sprocket engaged by a chain. The chain is connected to a drive sprocket mounted on a drive shaft of a motor which is mounted on the frame. The frame also has a locator plate to aid in centering the clamping pads with the signature bundles.
Abstract: On a conveyor belt, an ejection mechanism ejects objects travelling thereon which do not fulfill predetermined requirements as detected by a detecting device. To speed up the return of the ejection mechanism to its home position, the ejection cycle is divided into several movements. First a striking element is propelled against the object to be ejected, then the striking mechanism pivots on a fixed point to bring the striking element out of the path of the objects. Next the striking element is retracted and the ejection mechanism pivots back to its original position. A locking device may be used to retain the ejection mechanism in the deflected position to ensure that the striking element is completely retracted before the ejection mechanism pivots back to the home position.
