Abstract: Diagnostic method, based on the amounts of biogenic amines that are contained in a body fluid or other sample. A number of measured parameters related to the desired diagnostic information are derived from the amounts. For each diagnostic information desired, an input consisting of the identification of the diagnostic information is provided. The input is compared to the measured parameters and a diagnostic response is derived from the comparison. The measured parameters may be derived from the amounts of the biogenic amines according to a program stored in a memory. The detection of the less volatile amines and their separation from the more volatile ones may advantageously be enhanced by successively adding a base and an acid, in either possible succession, to the sample and analyzing the vapors emitted by the sample under heating.

Abstract: A molding apparatus includes a bottom platen, a bottom mold portion carried by the bottom platen, and a top platen overlying the bottom platen and the bottom mold portion. The top platen includes slots extending therethrough for receiving a molding material. The molding material is to be gravity deposited into the bottom mold portion. A top mold portion is carried by the top platen and is moveable between a molding material loading position and an article forming position. An actuator is coupled to the top mold portion for moving the top mold portion between the molding material loading position and the article forming position. The molding material loading position corresponds to when the top mold portion is non-overlying the bottom mold portion so that the molding material can be gravity deposited therein. Abstract: An electro-mechanical actuator having means for transmitting motion, in the final part of a stroke performed by a system comprising a worm shaft and rider nut coupled through gearing with an electric motor, to an auxiliary interrupter for breaking the power supply to the motor. Two control levers are provided, these being coupled together, and being rotated, about a perpendicular axis, by a cursor which is fixed to the nut that slides on the worm shaft. The pivoting of the said levers is blocked during the movement of the drive shaft driven by the system consisting of the worm shaft and nut. By contrast, the levers pivot during the final part of the movement of the cursor. The distance through which the levers move in pivoting is large enough to avoid any need for the auxiliary interrupter to be a high precision component.
Abstract: An integrated circuit includes a DC-DC converter, which includes an inductor; a first transistor coupled to the inductor and configured to pass an inductor current to the inductor; and a second transistor forming a current mirror with the first transistor. The integrated circuit further includes an operational amplifier. The operational amplifier includes a first input node and a second input node. The first input node is configured to couple to a drain of the first transistor when the first transistor is turned on, and decoupled from the drain of the first transistor when the first transistor is turned off. The second input node is coupled to a drain of the second transistor.
Abstract: Various methods and devices for driving fluid from a syringe are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a syringe driver is provided having a frame that is adapted to seat a syringe, a driver that is slidably disposed within the frame and that is adapted to seat a plunger of a syringe, and a puller that is slidably disposed within the frame and that has a latch formed thereon for mating to an engagement element on the frame. The device can also include a force-delivery element, such as a constant force spring, that is coupled to and extends between the driver and the puller.

Abstract: Various techniques and apparatus permit fabrication of superconductive circuits and structures, for instance Josephson junctions, which may, for example be useful in quantum computers. For instance, a low magnetic flux noise trilayer structure may be fabricated having a dielectric structure or layer interposed between two elements or layers capable of superconducting. A superconducting via may directly overlie a Josephson junction. A structure, for instance a Josephson junction, may be carried on a planarized dielectric layer. A fin may be employed to remove heat from the structure. A via capable of superconducting may have a width that is less than about 1 micrometer. The structure may be coupled to a resistor, for example by vias and/or a strap connector.

Abstract: There is provided an evanescent wave multimode optical waveguide sensitive to a chemical species or to a physical parameter. The optical waveguide comprises a core and a cladding having a cladding refractive index lower than that of the core for guiding light to be propagated in the optical waveguide. The cladding defines with the core an optical waveguide providing mode coupling. A chemical indicator is provided in the cladding for causing a variation of the optical absorption of the cladding as a function of the chemical species or the physical parameter. The cladding is interrogated by the evanescent wave of the propagated light. The mode coupling causes unabsorbed light power to be redistributed among the multiple modes while light propagates along the optical waveguide.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for mapping data and de-mapping data are provided. In the method, each modulated datum is mapped into two centrosymmetric Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers at the transmitting end, a certain functional transformation is performed on data in one of the two OFDM subcarriers, and original data may be restored at the receiving end according to data of the two centrosymmetric OFDM subcarriers. Exemplary embodiments of the invention also provide a transmitting device and a receiving device. By adopting embodiments of the invention, self-cancellation of interference among subcarriers may be implemented effectively, and the interference among subcarriers may be reduced.
