Abstract: A fuel cell includes a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and at least one bipolar plate having an anode-side gas distributor structure for distributing anode reactants, a cathode-side gas distributor structure for distributing cathode reactants, and a guide passage structure for distributing a cooling medium. At least one of the anode-side gas distributor structure and the cathode-side gas distributor structure is divided into at least a first field and a second field, each of the first and second fields having an entry port and an exit port for the reactants. In addition, a method for such a fuel cell includes passing a reactant into an entry port of the first field and out of an exit port of the first field, mixing the reactant with a fresh reactant so as to form a mixture, and passing the mixture into the entry port of the second field.
Abstract: In a method for controlling an output torque of an electric variable transmission having an input coupled to a combustion engine and at least one electric motor that is at least feedable by a battery and able to recuperate energy into the battery, the battery power is limited to a maximum continuous battery power when the transmission is in a stationary operating point with a continuous revolution speed. The battery power is increased and limited to a maximum transient battery power that is greater than the maximum continuous battery power in a non-stationary operating point, upon a request for changing the gear-ratio (ratio between transmission input and output-speed) or upon a request for changing the transmissions output revolution speed.
Abstract: A low compressive load seal for a solid polymer fuel cell employs two offset peripheral projections, one on each of the anode and cathode separator plates, for compressing a gasket. The design can achieve a seal against a given burst pressure with a lower load normal to the separator plates by creating significant compression parallel to the separator plates in the gap between the offset projections. The design allows for thinner fuel cell constructions while avoiding the issues that arise in prior art designs (e.g., stress on seal material and component crushing) if reasonable tolerances were allowed for variations in component thickness.

Abstract: In a device for conveying liquids or moist gases through a closed duct in a vehicle fuel cell power systems, freezing of the duct is prevented by providing a part of its internal wall flow passages or flow chambers with a nonwoven material. The nonwoven material absorbs liquid in disperse form at low temperatures through its capillary action and inhibits premature ice formation.

Abstract: The method is used for automated tightening of a screwed joint (16), which is fitted to a component (10) in advance and contains a screw (12) and a nut (14), using a programmable industrial robot system (18). In this case, the invention provides that the industrial robot system (18) has a first robot (20) with a screw driving head (22) and a second robot (24) with a mating holding head (26). In order to tighten the screwed joint (16) on the component (10), the screw driving head (22) is positioned in a defined screw driving position, and the mating holding head (26) is positioned in a defined mating holding position in order to produce an interlocking connection, which is suitable for tightening of the screwed joint (16), between the mating holding head (26) and the nut (14), as well as between the screw driving head (22) and the screw (12). The screwed joint (16) on the component (10) is tightened with a predeterminable fixing torque. The interlocking connections are then disconnected.

Abstract: A method of surface treating a separator plate of a fuel cell comprises reacting the separator plate with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. The aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide comprises one or more salts of one or more transition metals. The one or more transition metals have variable oxidation states. This method makes the surface of the separator plate hydrophilic (˜35 deg contact angle of water) and improves its electrical conductivity. The method of surface treating a separator plate (e.g., a graphite and/or graphite composite plate) of a fuel cell can further comprise a method of modifying wettability of the separator plate comprising treating the separator plate with a solution comprising one or more silanes. In another embodiment, a method of modifying wettability of a separator plate (e.g.
