Patent number: 7677049Abstract: A method of venting a refrigerant from an air conditioning system of a vehicle during a crash to mitigate leakage of the refrigerant into a cabin of the vehicle by crashing a test vehicle under a first set of predetermined conditions a number of crash events and measuring deceleration and determining the existence of leakage. The number of crash events in which leakage existed is divided by the number of crash events to establish a probability of leakage ratio. The test vehicle is crashed under a second set of predetermined conditions to determine a second probability of leakage ratio. A probability of leakage relationship is established correlating the probability of leakage ratios and the predetermined conditions. A deceleration relationship is established correlating the deceleration measurements and the predetermined conditions.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2007Date of Patent: March 16, 2010Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Mark James Zima, Prasad Shripad Kadle

Patent number: 7680583Abstract: A system and method for identifying the cylinders having the lowest (“weakest”) and highest (“strongest”) Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP) utilizes engine speed derivative and/or higher order derivative values typically available in an engine control module by virtue of the need to detect misfire. A delta parameter is calculated that is indicative of the difference between the engine speed derivatives and/or higher order derivatives for the “weakest” and the “strongest” cylinders. Control action is then taken to balance the cylinders, based on the delta parameter, by first increasing torque for the “weakest” cylinder, by at least one increasing spark advance, increasing fuel, decreasing dilution (EGR) or slowing decay of fuel control on cold start. Once the weakest cylinder has been balanced, the control action is then directed to increasing torque of the new “weakest” cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2008Date of Patent: March 16, 2010Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Daniel L. Publication number: 20100063684Abstract: An electric power steering system of a vehicle includes a controller for controlling an electric motor connected to a steering column or other steering mechanism. The velocity of the motor must be determined to maintain the proper current to the motor. A method of estimating the velocity includes obtaining a first and second velocity signals from one or more sensors monitoring the motor. The first and second signals have different characteristics, e.g., the first signal may have a higher resolution than the second signal. An acceleration (or deceleration) of the velocity of the electric motor is computed based on the different representations of the velocity supplied by the different signals. An estimate of the velocity of the motor is then determined based on the acceleration/deceleration and the different representations of the velocity. The electric current provided to the electric motor is then adjusted based on the estimated velocity to meet the desired motor output (i.e., motor torque and velocity).Type: ApplicationFiled: August 11, 2009Publication date: March 11, 2010Applicant: DELPHI TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventor: Mark P. Patent number: 7674972Abstract: A braided shield includes a housing formed from a plurality of wires braided together and having a dual-layer configuration. The housing has an outer layer integrally formed with an inner layer. A support is at least partially disposed in the housing, and the inner layer is disposed between the support and the outer layer. The inner layer and outer layer reduce electromagnetic radiation leakage into/out of the housing by reducing the number of holes in the housing. Forming the braided shield includes providing the housing, which defines a longitudinal axis and a passage extending along the longitudinal axis. The housing has an end portion, and the end portion is compressed transverse to the longitudinal axis. The end portion is then forced into the passage. Accordingly, the braid shield reduces or eliminates electromagnetic radiation while providing a strong and consistent crimp with the support.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2007Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Joseph H. Patent number: 7675223Abstract: A clip for securing a sleeve to the body of a piezoelectric actuator in an actuator assembly. The clip takes the form of a band and has at least a first and a second stable state. The minimum separation of the walls of the band when the clip is in one of the stable states is less than the minimum separation of the walls of the band when the clip is in an unstable state. The clip is forced into an unstable state in order to be fitted over the sleeve of the actuator assembly. The force is then removed to allow the clip to revert towards a stable state. The dimensions of the clip are such that the clip is unable to fully revert to a stable state when fitted to the actuator assembly thereby maintaining sufficient additional strain energy to maintain a sufficient clamping force between the sleeve and the body of the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2008Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Guy C. Patent number: 7675346Abstract: A switching control system and method is provided that optimizes switching efficiencies for power switching applications including automotive ignition systems, solenoid drivers, motor drivers and power regulation systems. In an ignition system, a coil current switching magnitude is controlled at the start of ignition coil charging, thereby avoiding an untimely spark event. When the transistor threshold voltage is reached, the collapse rate of the ignition system transistor collector voltage is reduced by reducing the gate charging current. The reduced collector voltage slew rate results in a reduced primary and secondary coil output voltage. After the collector voltage collapses, a continued rapid charge is provided to place the transistor in a hard saturation bias condition. In an aspect, the present invention dynamically determines the threshold voltage of a power transistor.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2006Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Scott B. Patent number: 7675820Abstract: A vehicle crash event is detected and characterized based on the transmission of acoustical shear waves through the vehicle frame. At least three, and preferably four or more, acoustical emission sensors longitudinally and laterally distributed on the vehicle frame produce acoustical signals that are processed to extract the shear wave energy due to impacts. Since shear waves are non-dispersive and travel through the vehicle frame at a known velocity, they can be detected in any part of the frame. The extracted shear wave signals are used not only to judge the severity of the impact, but also to characterize the type of crash and determine the direction of the impact based on when the shear wave is detected by each of the acoustical emission sensors.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2007Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Dennis P Griffin, William W. Patent number: 7675296Abstract: Driver distraction in a motor vehicle is assessed by capacitively detecting the driver's head pose relative to the forward direction of vehicle motion. A symmetrical array of sensor electrodes is disposed in the cockpit ceiling above the driver's head, and pairs of electrodes disposed along varying axes of rotation with respect to the forward direction are successively activated for capacitance measurement. The capacitance measurements are combined to form a signal whose strength depends on the degree of alignment between the driver's head (i.e., the head pose) and the respective axes of rotation, and the driver's head pose is calculated to assess driver distraction.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2006Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: David K.
