Abstract: A novel and efficient method for preparing S-chloromethyl derivatives of O-alkylphosphorodithioic acids involves reacting the S-hydroxymethyl derivative of such an acid under substantially anhydrous conditions with a suitable acid chloride in a chemically unreactive organic liquid which is a solvent for both said S-hydroxymethyl derivative and said acid chloride. Suitable acid chlorides are PCl.sub.5, PCl.sub.3, acetyl chloride, chlorinated derivatives of acetyl chloride, oxyalyl chloride, phosgene, thionyl chloride, sulfuryl chloride, aryl sulfonyl chlorides and chloro- or nitro-substituted aryl sulfonyl chlorides.

Abstract: Methionine is prepared from 5-(beta-methylmercaptoethyl)-hydantoin at atmospheric pressure by refluxing the hydantoin with a metal hydroxide such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or barium hydroxide and an alkanol having a boiling point of from about 125.degree. C. to about 230.degree. C. at atmospheric pressure, preferably, a water saturated alkanol having a boiling point of from about 125.degree. C. to about 230.degree. C. at atmospheric pressure and thereafter recovering methionine.
Abstract: Improved shaped polymeric articles, including ostomy seals, are obtained by radiation crosslinking an acrylamide polymer composition comprising a water-soluble acrylamide polymer plasticized with a quantity of a water-miscible polyol (containing water) that provides a soft, flexible and elastomeric composition.
Abstract: A condensation product of naphthalenesulfonic acid and linear alkyl benzenesulfonic acid having an alkyl moiety of from about 4 to about 20 carbon atoms with formaldehyde or salt thereof is useful as a secondary emulsifier and co-emulsifier in synthetic polymer latex processes. From about 0.05 to about 5 parts by weight of the condensation product per 100 parts by weight of latex monomer is used as a secondary emulsifier and from about 0.5 to about 5 parts by weight of the condensation product per 100 parts by weight of latex monomer is used as a co-emulsifier. Additionally, products can be prepared which have been found to be biodegradable. Use of these condensation products eliminates pollution caused by a secondary emulsifier or co-emulsifier in polymer manufacture effluent.
Abstract: Biofouling and scale control in conductive aqueous systems is effected on metal, preferably valve metal such as titanium, surfaces on which such fouling normally occurs by applying thereto a stable electrocatalytic coating, anodically polarizing said valve metal coating such that only oxygen is evolved at the surface thereof, preferably at a rate at least about 4.66 millimoles per square meter per hour without evolution of any chlorine.
Abstract: An improved ostomy seal is provided by a crosslinked composition comprising a water-soluble acrylamide polymer, a plasticizing quantity of a water-miscible polyol (containing water) that provides an elastomeric gel, and a crosslinking polyaldehyde.
Abstract: Substituted 1,2,4-triazines, compositions thereof and methods of using same are described. The compounds of the invention exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activity including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-pyretic, hypotensive and central nervous system effects.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the preparation of high density resins by bromination of particles of crosslinked vinylaromatic copolymers of either the gel type or the ionic or non-ionic macroporous type. The invention is characterized in that crosslinked vinylaromatic polymer particles which have been swollen in a solvent are contacted with bromine or a bromine releasing agent in the presence of an oxidizing agent.

Abstract: Washfastness of dyed nylon textile material is improved by treating dyed textile material with a water soluble polymeric textile treating agent which is a reaction product of dihydroxy diphenyl sulfone, formaldehyde and naphthalenesulfonic acid and is characterized as a 30% by weight solution in acetone having a reduced viscosity at 21.degree. C. of between about 0.225 and about 0.275.
Abstract: Disclosed is a monopolar membrane cell in which identical anode and cathode pans are stamped from bimetallic laminate material in which an electrolyte resistant material is utilized on the inside of the electrolytic cell and a highly conductive metal is utilized on the outside thereof. This design results in a substantial lowering of the voltage drop due to resistance through the anode and cathode pans of membrane cells.
Abstract: Disclosed is an electrode for use in electrochemical processes wherein a metal substrate made of a valve metal such as titanium carries an electrocatalytically active coating such as an oxide selected from the group consisting of manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel applied in a series of layers wherein particles of fibers of various filler materials such as titanium, other valve metals, tin oxide, titanium oxides, manganese oxide, quartz, silica, and alumina were admixed with the top coating material.
Abstract: Completely free flow characteristics are provided to a densified rigid poly(vinyl chloride) resin powder composition as prepared in a high shear mixer at an elevated temperature, by withholding at least a portion of the total filler requirement from the composition during the initial mixing cycle, and thereafter adding the remainder of the filler requirement to the composition after it has been cooled to a temperature of 175.degree. F. or less. The total filler requirement of the composition may likewise be added after cooling the blend to 175.degree. F. or less. The resulting rigid resin powder composition exhibits the optimum free flow characteristics required for satisfactory processing in multi-screw extruders.
Abstract: A composition consisting essentially of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid and certain imides, carbamates, or tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, increases the ability of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid alone to cause the release of ethylene in plant tissue when applied to same.
Abstract: An economical process for the controlled S-chloromethylation of O-alkyl esters of dithiophospho acid compounds with methylene chloride is provided by conducting the reaction in a liquid medium comprising a large excess of methylene chloride and a substantial, reaction promoting proportion of a highly polar, miscible, organic cosolvent.
Abstract: Novel oxygen selective electrode comprising a coating on said anode consisting of delta manganese dioxide. This outer coating on the anode may be placed on the anode electrochemically by electrolyzing an acid saline solution having dissolved therein sufficient manganous chloride. Sufficient manganese dioxide is plated on said anode when the chlorine evolution essentially ceases during electrolysis.
Abstract: This invention relates to the art of electrowinning and, more particularly, to a process for recovering zinc which is leached from an alloy coating of nickel and zinc which has previously been deposited on cathodes of an electrolytic cell used in the electrolysis of alkali metal halides. Further, a method of utilizing the recovered zinc for control of the zinc content of the nickel-zinc plating solution is disclosed.
