Abstract: In order to control the ejection of sheets from input compartments in a paper output device belonging to a printing or photocopying system, verification occurs as to whether a previously processed sheet has been removed as soon as it has been established that at least one input compartment is almost empty. Ejection of the sheet immediately following according to the order of processing occurs thereafter. These steps are repeated until the input compartment is empty. The printing operation is then stopped.

Abstract: A bifocal lens for use in a multiple beam antenna system including a reflector that is at least partially parabolic in one dimension and a pair of waveguides. Multiple received beams are received and reflected by the reflector into an orthogonal mode junction which separates signals of a first polarity from signals of a second orthogonal polarity. The signals of the first polarity are forwarded into a first waveguide and the orthogonal signals of the second polarity are forwarded into a second parallel waveguide. A plurality of satellites may be accessed simultaneously thus allowing the user to utilize both signals at the same time. The bifocal lenses may be located in the waveguides, respectively, with each lens including a step portion defined in at least one edge thereof for matching purposes.

Abstract: There is provided a method and apparatus for measuring the optical properties of bulk samples. A probe laser beam is fed into the two arms of the apparatus, a reference arm and a measurement arm, both of which contain optical fiber to conduct the laser lights. The measurement arm includes a free space area for mounting a sample to be tested. The probe beam is directed into the sample in free space. The sample also receives light in free space, rather than via the optical fiber, from a second, pump laser. The interaction of the sample and the pump laser affect the optical properties of the sample. This change in optical properties can be detected by comparing the output signals from the measurement and reference arms.

Abstract: A twin coupler system includes first and second optical couplers that couple a multimode pump fiber into a double-clad active primary fiber. The pump fiber carries multimode pump power from a multimode source. The primary fiber, on the other hand, carries optical information signals on the single mode core that are amplified through the pump power. A system and method for manufacturing the twin coupler system constructs the first coupler by preparing first portions of the primary and pump fibers for coupling and performing fusion and tapering operations on the primary and pump fibers at the first portions, and constructs the second coupler by preparing second portions of the primary and pump fibers for coupling and performing fusion and tapering operations on the primary and pump fibers at the second portions.
Abstract: This invention relates to mixing two substantially immiscible fluids having substantial viscosity differences into a single phase solution. The invention particular includes a mixer comprising a specially designed conveyor flights to provide shear mixing without differential conveying of the fluids or causing excessive back pressure or pressure drop on the solution.

Abstract: The invention provides a package which varies the tension within a fiber Bragg grating (or other fiber-based optical device) by resilient deflection of a fiber support member through differential thermal expansion, thereby allowing the temperature/tension characteristics of the package to be tailored so as to provide the desired optical characteristics throughout a wide temperature range. The fiber tension/temperature correlation may be tailored using the linear coefficient of expansion of two different materials, by varying the resilient flexibility of a beam supporting the fiber, by varying a length of an arm extending from the beam to the fiber, by varying the resilient strength of the arm, and the like. By relying on the resilient deformation of a flexible fiber support structure, the present invention provides a large number of degrees of freedom within the package design parameters.
Abstract: Compositions and methods for manufacturing sheets having a highly inorganically filled matrix. Suitable inorganically filled mixtures are prepared by mixing together an organic polymer binder, water, one or more inorganic aggregate materials, fibers, and optional admixtures in the correct proportions in order to form a sheet which has the desired performance criteria. The inorganically filled mixtures are formed into sheets by first extruding the mixtures and the passing the extruded materials between a set of rollers. The rolled sheets are dried in an accelerated manner to form a substantially hardened sheet, such as by heated rollers and/or a drying chamber. The inorganically filled sheets may have properties substantially similar to sheets presently made from traditional materials like paper, cardboard, polystyrene, plastic, or metal. Such sheets can be rolled, pressed, scored, perforated, folded, and glued.
Abstract: Photopolymerizable compositions and associated elements and processes are disclosed herein that upon imaging afford improved sidewall geometry and development latitude. These compositions contain a polymeric binder having the formula:

where A is a substituted or unsubstituted C4-C10 n-alkyl methacrylate, B is a substituted or unsubstituted C4-C10 n-alkyl acrylate, C is selected from the group consisting of methyl methacrylate and ethyl methacrylate, and D is selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid and acrylic acid; and
where w, x, y, and z are weight percentages of comonomers in the polymeric binder, w is 5 to 40%, x is 5 to 40%, y is 10 to 70%, and z is 10 to 30%.
Abstract: The present invention provides a seal ring for placement in the space between a radial groove of a cylindrical member and a housing forming a bore in which the cylindrical member is movably positioned, which is free of scoring and has a fracture line through its thickness to form opposing faces. The faces are rough and mesh together such that when the faces are forced into contact, the faces are then interlocked. Furthermore, the seal ring has true roundness to enable the seal ring to seal the space despite presence of the fracture line. The seal ring is made up of a rigid polymer such as a polyimide, polyamide, polyester, polyetheretherketone, polyamideimide, polyetherimide, polyphenylene sulfide, and polybenzimidazole. The seal ring of the present invention is capable of single ring sealing of the space between the bore and the radial groove. The present invention also provides a device for fracturing the seal ring.

Abstract: An apparatus serves for influencing the separation of a flow 2 from a body 1 immersed in the flow. The apparatus excites a shear layer 11 of the flow 2 at the immersed body 1 by periodic blowing and suction in order to act against further separation of the shear layer 11 from the immersed body 1. For this purpose, the apparatus has at least one passive cavity resistor 46, the hollow cylinder 4 of which has at least one opening 6 leading to the surface 10 of the body 1. The cavity resonator 46 is excited by the flow 2 thus creating compressional vibrations, and the compressional vibrations of the cavity resonator 46 excite the shear layer 11.
