Abstract: TM.sub.0i0 mode (i=1, 2, 3, . . . ) planar high temperature superconductor resonators useful in high temperature superconducting filters, filter banks and multiplexers comprise a shaped high temperature superconductor film and a high temperature superconductor ground plate deposited on opposite sides of a dielectric substrate, wherein the shaped high temperature superconductor film has an aperture in the center thereof and has a shape selected from the group consisting of circles and polygons.
Abstract: An umbilical cord cutting and clamping device includes two clamps abutted in a side-by-side relation and a blade connected to an arm of one of the clamps and positioned between the two clamps. Both clamps have an upper arm and a lower arm, and a hinge coupling the proximal ends of the upper and lower arms. The clamps are held in relative position by frictional engagement and by a latch means which is automatically disengaged when the clamps are moved into a closed position. Both the upper and lower arms include clamping surfaces for clamping the umbilical cord. The proximal end of one of the clamping surfaces is provide with a retention tab which retains the umbilical cord between the clamping surfaces; i.e., the tab prevents the cord from migrating proximally off the clamping surfaces and into the hinge area.

Abstract: Epoxides containing a perfluorovinyl group, and polymers made therefrom by polymerization of the epoxy function are disclosed. Such epoxides form polymers and copolymers useful for coatings, adhesion control agents, surface modifiers and crosslinking agents.
Abstract: An improved closed cell polymer foam and foaming agent involving the use of a hydrogen-containing halocarbon blowing agent (e.g., HCFC-22) in combination with an effective amount of a hydrogen bond forming blocking agent (e.g., organic ether, ester or ketone). The presence of the blocking agent is shown to significantly reduce the escape of blowing agent from and entry of air into the foam resulting in low thermal conductivity over a longer period of time and improved thermal insulation value. A closed cell thermoplastic foam such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, among others, is disclosed produced by means of an environmentally friendly nonflammable blowing agent substantially free of halogen substituents other than fluorine and comprising HFC-134 (1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane).
Abstract: A seal layer formed from a thermoplastic polymer blend comprising (a) a non-polar, non-ionomeric polyolefin, and (b) a polar ethylene copolymer having carbon monoxide functionality, and its use to adhere adjacent thermoplastic films together to form a package. Since the bonding strength of the thermoplastic films to one another and to the seal layer is greater than the internal cohesion strength of the seal layer itself, the seal layer provides for an easy open package.

Abstract: Diffraction patterns in a focal region are governed by immersing the focal region in dielectric medium having an index of refraction higher than one. The pattern of the focal region is made small by causing the focal region to be immersed in a body having an index of refraction greater than 1. The resulting diffraction pattern sensed appropriately in the focal region is independent of traditional aperture limitations in resolving power. Microwave pictures are taken at the same resolution as optical pictures using the same aperture size when an appropriate dielectric immersion material is provided.

Abstract: A device operable to supply a force feedback to a physiological unit to be sed as an advanced interface for machines and computers, including an exoskeleton which includes kinematic elements articulated about articulation axes arranged coincident with or in close proximity to the physiological axes of the physiological unit such as, for example, the flexion-extension axes of the phalanges of the fingers of a hand of an operator. A series of electrical actuators controls the degree of tension on traction cables applying a force feedback to the kinematic elements and consequently to the physiological unit, so as to simulate an interaction between the operator and a virtual object. The device includes position sensors for detecting the configuration of the physiological unit and force sensors for measuring the strength of the force locally applied thereto by the actuators controlled by a processing system.

Abstract: A process for increasing the solvent resistance of calendered paper consisting of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) short fibers and poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) fibrids and the dimensional stability of laminates made therefrom.
Abstract: The present invention provides for multiple wavelength laser sources. The laser source has a pumping laser generating output at a wavelength, typically below 1500 nm, and a plurality of DBR fiber lasers or DFB fiber lasers, each having an output which is centered at a selected wavelength in the 1550 nm range. The fiber lasers are connected to the pumping laser such that the output light from said first pumping laser provides lasing energy for each of said fiber lasers. The fiber lasers may be connected serially or in series to each other. An optical fiber amplifier may be connected to the output of the serially-connected fiber lasers, or to the output of each one of the parallel-connected fiber lasers, to amplify the output from the fiber lasers so that the pumping laser provides energy for both the fiber lasers and the optical fiber amplifier.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for producing 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane and/or 1,1, 1,3,3-pentafluoropropene from (CF.sub.3).sub.2 CHCOOH and/or its water soluble salts. The process involves providing a mixture containing water and such carboxy compound(s) which has a pH of less than about 4, and reacting the mixture at a temperature of at least about 75.degree. C. Certain ether compounds may be included in the mixture along with (CF.sub.3).sub.2 CHCOOH and/or its water soluble salts. The reaction of the carboxy (and optionally ether) compound(s) with water may be employed in connection with a process for producing tetrafluoroethylene and/or hexafluoropropylene by pyrolysis, where by-product perfluoroisobutylene is reacted with water (and optionally an alkanol) to produce (CF.sub.3).sub.2 CHCOOH (and optionally one or more ether compounds).
