Abstract: Novel surfactants and drying and/or cleaning compositions containing such surfactants are disclosed. The surfactants are 1:1 primary or secondary amine salts of .gamma..omega.-perfluoro-C.sub.6 -C,.sub.8 -alkyl dihydrogen phosphates and bis(y,co-perfluoro-C.sub.6 -Cis-alkyl) hydrogen phosphates. The surfactants are soluble in, and convert halocarbons, especially HFC 43-10mee (1,1,1,2,2,3,4,5,5,5-decafluoropentane), into highly effective displacement drying and/or cleaning compositions. These compositions have the ability to remove water or aqueous films from the surface of a broad range of substrates.
Abstract: This invention concerns methods for synthesis and accumulation of fructose polymers in seed, tubers or leaves of transgenic plants by selective expression of a bacterial fructosyltransferase gene. Selective expression includes coordination of timing, tissue specific expression and especially subcellular location. Successful transformants utilize sucrose to synthesize and accumulate fructan in the vacuole of the cell, in established crops, without loss of co-products or concern for yield loss due to degradation during maturation, harvest or storage of the plant. Enhanced fructan production will benefit the fructose sweetener industry and add value to grain used for feed.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of five-membered or six-membered ring lactams from aliphatic .alpha.,.omega.-dinitriles has been developed. In the process an aliphatic .alpha.,.omega.-dinitrile is first converted to an ammonium salt of an .omega.-nitrile-carboxylic acid in aqueous solution using a catalyst having an aliphatic nitrilase (EC 3.5.5.7) activity, or a combination of nitrile hydratase (EC 4.2.1.84) and arnidase (EC 3.5.1.4) activities. The ammonium salt of the .omega.-nitrilecarboxylic acid is then converted directly to the corresponding lactam by hydrogenation in aqueous solution, without isolation of the intermediate .omega.-nitrilecarboxylic acid or .omega.-aminocarboxylic acid. When the aliphatic .alpha.,.omega.-dinitrile is also unsymmetrically substituted at the .alpha.-carbon atom, the nitrilase produces the .omega.-nitrilecarboxylic acid ammonium salt resulting from hydrolysis of the .omega.

Abstract: Linear low density copolymer of ethylene/1-hexene is made processible into heat shrinkable film by a continuous process starting with the extrusion of the copolymer as a film. The production rate of heat shrinkable film made from linear low density copolymer of ethylene/1-octene-can be increased by the step of blending a minor proportion of highly branched low density polyethylene with either copolymer prior to extrusion.
