  • Patent number: 5900511
Abstract: A process for continuous hydrogenation of adiponitrile (ADN) to hexamethylene diamine (HMD) and optionally to amninocapronitrile (ACN) involving the catalytic hydrogenation of adiponitrile at relatively low temperature (e.g., 75.degree. C.) and pressure (e.g., 500 psig) using a sponge cobalt catalyst (Raney.RTM. Co) in a reaction medium that is substantially free of caustic. In such a process periodic addition of water controls the production of side reaction products and the periodic addition of ammonium hydroxide rejuvenates the catalyst. Hexamethylene diamine is an important intermediate for the synthesis of polyamides such as Nylon-6,6 and aminocapronitrile is a potential intermediate of Nylon-6.

  • Patent number: 5900119
Abstract: The present invention comprises a method for forming a biodegradable, thin-walled packing chip from an aqueous pulp of recycled newsprint by contacting the pulp with a mold comprising: (a) a solid core having substantially the shape of the article to be formed and having a minimal number of holes through which air may be evacuated and (b) an air permeable, stretchable fabric which covers the exterior of the core. After forming the chip on the fabric through application of a vacuum, the fabric is separated sufficiently from the solid surface to cause release of the chip from the fabric. The dried packing chip has enhanced packing qualities, is environmentally friendly and provides a significant new use for recycled newsprint.

  • Patent number: 5897901
Abstract: See-through, packaging structures for liquid or semi-liquid fruit or vegetable products, which have a polyamide food contact-layer of at least 0.4 mil. thickness, extends the color-life of the contained food product. The polyamide layer removes certain degradation products of polyphenolic compounds which otherwise would cause browning during storage. The packaging structures allow the contents and their color to be clearly seen by using a transparent film or sheet structural material having a polyamide surface-layer, the structural material being formed into a packaging structure. The packaging structure may be one such as a film pouch or a plastic bottle, the surface layer of the film or sheet forming the inner-surface food contact-layer of the packaging structure. Alternatively, a polyamide inner contact-layer in the lidding of a see-through package structure can be used, in which case the see-through package container portion itself need not have a polyamide inner contact-layer.

  • Patent number: 5898919
Abstract: A system for communicating information from a television viewer to a central site includes a remote control unit for sending command signals from the viewer to a television or video cassette recorder (VCR). Circuitry integral with the television or VCR accepts the command signals from the remote control unit and interprets the signals to form a viewer command, such as a purchase command, to be communicated to the central site. The circuitry automatically sends dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) tone signals representing the command over a radio frequency (RF) link to a cordless telephone base unit, which is connected to the central site by a public switched telephone network. The cordless telephone base unit initiates a telephone call to the central site and communicates the DTMF tone signals received from the DTMF circuitry in the television or VCR to the central site.

  • Patent number: 5895821
Abstract: An improved process for calcination and activation of a catalyst containing mixed oxides of vanadium and phosphorus (V/P/O) involving the addition of spray dried catalyst precursor to a fluidizing oxygen containing gas at a controlled rate such that the temperature is maintained at a range of 370 to 410.degree. C. (preferably 390.+-.5.degree. C.). The catalyst precursor experiences, in addition to rapid temperature rise, dehydration/calcination at this elevated temperature in the fluidized state for an average range of residence time of less than about 4 hours at 3.5 atm of air or above, and up to 20 hours at 1 atm of air while simultaneously and continuously maintaining an average V.sub.ox of 4.55 or less. Such a process is useful in preparing a V/P/O catalyst that exhibits enhanced activity for the oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride. The novel process also provides an improved method for start-up of a commercial scale recirculating solids reactor.

  • Patent number: 5895173
Abstract: A roadway paving apparatus applies successive layers of paving material to a roadway surface so as to form a desired thickness of pavement thereon. Preferably, the apparatus comprises a hopper for hauling aggregate material (e.g., gravel, sand, and/or crushed stone) and for dispensing a curtain of falling aggregate material therefrom. An initial group of spray nozzles aimed generally at the surface of the roadway applies a base layer of adhesive material (e.g., liquid asphalt) to the surface of the roadway. One or more groups of subsequent spray nozzles aimed generally at the curtain of falling aggregate material coats the curtain of falling aggregate material with adhesive material such that an intermediate layer of adhesive coated aggregate material is deposited on top of the underlying base layer of adhesive material. A final group of spray nozzles aimed at the surface of the roadway applies an overspray layer of adhesive material on top of the intermediate layer of adhesive coated aggregate material.
