Abstract: The modulator comprises an integrated optical switch (6) receiving at an input a linearly-polarized optical carrier and transferring same to a first or a second output (P3, P4), according to the logic values of the bits of a modulating binary data signal. The radiations outgoing from the switch are sent to a polarizing beam splitter (13) with their original polarization or with a polarization rotated by 90.degree. depending on the switch output (P3, P4) from which they come. A signal with the original polarization or with the polarization rotated by 90.degree. is present at the splitter output, depending on the logic values of the bits of the modulating signal.

Abstract: A method for making a polyurethane elastomer tire fill composition wherein a mixture of a) a low functionality (2.0-2.3) 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, such as a carboiimide-modified (2.0 functionality) 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and b) a nonreactive diluent, such as an oil extender, is mixed with a polyol, such as polypropylene oxide triol. The reaction mixture is inserted into a tire casing under pressure and cured therein to form an essentially void-free tire filler. The tire fill composition maintains pressure within the tire during use and has excellent physical and thermal properties. No prepolymer step is necessary in the method.
Abstract: A novel cationic electrodepositable resin which offers reduced bake off lose, reduced yellowing of topcoats and very smooth film is disclosed. The backbone resin contains the basic polyepoxy amine adduct but it is crosslinked with a diol modified methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) which is blocked with a mixture of various alcohols.
Abstract: A process for improving the properties of fibers of a copolymer of ethylene terephthalate/hexahydroterephthlate units with a high proportion of hexahydroterephthalate units by a 2-stage drawing, crimping, relaxing process to provide stretchy filaments of high elongation accompanied by low shrinkage.
Abstract: Solid polyester fiber in spun yarns, and fabrics and garments and precursor staple fiber and filamentary tow, are prepared by an improved process involving treatment of freshly-extruded undrawn polyester filaments with caustic in the spin-finish, so as to improve moisture-wicking properties.
Abstract: A new configuration of the electrodes of a transverse discharge pumped gas laser is disclosed, in which the electrode connected to ground and the electrode connected to the main condenser bank are placed on the same plane so as to face a third electrode connected to a high impedance. There are two distinct discharge regions, one of which is the back path of the current passing through the first discharge region.

Abstract: Rotor of a magnetomotive device has a discrete permanent magnetic and a ferromagnetic core disposed within an injection molded, synthetic plastic body in the form of a flywheel. The core is of integral, laminar construction and includes hub and counterweight portions and a pair of radially extending, circumferentially spaced arm portions. At their outer ends, the arm portions terminate in pole shoes with opposed, undercut edges to retain the discrete permanent magnet therebetween. Each of the arm portions has a laterally extending shoulder portion and, at their inner ends, connect to the hub by narrow neck or stem portions which are resiliently flexible. From the center of rotation of the rotor, the stem portions are each disposed along a given radius.
Abstract: A drill pipe/casing protector is mounted on a length of drill pipe adjacent to the tool joint of a length of rotary drill pipe that rotates within a well bore or a casing cemented in a well bore in which drilling operations are conducted. The drill pipe/casing protector comprises a protective sleeve preferably made from a compressible material secured to the exterior of the drill pipe to rotate with the drill pipe during normal drilling operations and to contact the casing and thereby prevent damaging contact between the rotary drill pipe and the casing. The sleeve rotates with the drill pipe during normal drilling operations in which there is an absence of contact between the sleeve and the casing, but the sleeve stops rotating or rotates very slowly while allowing the drill pipe to continue rotating within the sleeve upon frictional contact between the sleeve and the casing.

Abstract: An X-ray intensifying screen made from a mixture of yttrium tantalate and lanthanum oxyhalide phosphors is described. This screen, when used to expose a silver halide element, e.g., conventional grain or tabular grain element, will produce superior image resolution compared to similar screens made using single phosphors alone.
Abstract: Binary memory storage devices and cryotrons utilizing superconducting crystals exhibiting an onset of superconductivity and a relatively weak flux exclusion at a temperature T1 and the onset of relatively strong flux exclusion at T2, where T1>T2>77K, are controlled by dc magnetic fields. The preferred superconducting crystals have the formula Bi.sub.2 Sr.sub.3-z Ca.sub.z Cu.sub.2 O.sub.8+w wherein z is from about 0.1 to about 0.9 and w is greater than zero but less than about 1.

Abstract: Novel calcium channel blockers having the formula ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen or sulfur and wherein R, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 are as defined herein, are disclosed. These compounds are useful, for example, as anti-ischemic agents.
Abstract: The novel compound perfluoro-4,4'-bis(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane) is disclosed. Its preparation by fluorination of 4,4'-bis[2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane using UV radiation or by reaction of 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4-iodo-4,5,5-trifluoromethyl-1,3-dioxolane with zinc in acetic anhydride and methylene chloride is also disclosed. The infusion of perfluoro-4,4'-bis(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane) into mammalian tissue to facilitate inspection thereof by muclear magnetic resonance imaging is also disclosed.

Abstract: A wheel channel guide-lock assembly for laterally, vertically and horizontally securing adjacent telescoping wheel channels of a bleacher system. The assembly comprises a first type of bracket attached in pairs on one wheel channel which include axles extending therefrom for replacing existing channel wheel axles at opposite ends of a wheel channel. A second type bracket slidingly engages along a rod extending between the said first type brackets of the channel and is attached to an adjacent wheel channel whereby sequentially, adjacent channels are guided and locked together by means of the first brackets preventing the second bracket from sliding therepast.
Abstract: An upstanding hanger for the hanging of a garment of the tupe having shoulder straps has a central portion, a hook portion extending upwardly of the central portion and first and second wing portions extending outwardly of respective opposed side margins of the central portion, each wing portion having an end segment inclined downwardly at an acute angle with respect to the wing portion and defining a slot for receipt of a garment shoulder strap. In a second aspect, hangers of the invention having central and wing portions configure the wing portions with end segments which have spring action capacity for retentively notching shoulder straps therein. In a third aspect, hangers of the invention having central and wing portions configure the wing portions with end segments which have the capacity for retaining shoulder straps in one of plural positions relative thereto for more esthetically pleasing display of the garment.
