Abstract: Peroxide-curable fluoroelastomers and chlorofluoroelastomers are prepared in the presence of iodinated compounds, with iodine bonding to a substantial number of terminal positions on the fluoroelastomer, and comprising up to 3 weight percent of bromine-containing units selected from fluoroolefins and perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ethers, and complementally at least 97 weight percent of either units of vinylidene fluoride, one or more fluoroolefins, and optionally perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ethers, or units of tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoroalkyl perfluorovinyl ether, and ethylene. The resulting fluoroelastomers have improved processability, excellent strength and compression set properties, and are useful in the preparation of injection molded shaft seals, gaskets and other molded parts. The fluoroelastomer is prepared by a continuous emulsion polymerization process.

Abstract: An apparatus for the measurement of the cavitation or ebullition rate comprises an accelerometric transducer in contact with the liquid under cavitation or boiling and a filter and amplifier connected in cascade and having an input electrically connected to the transducer for providing on the output of the amplifier a signal containing information about cavitation or ebullition. This signal is then processed and displayed by two separate circuits. The first threshold circuit is connected to the output of the amplifier for eliminating signals having a value lower than a preset threshold value, a flash follower connected to the threshold circuit, and a counter and display connected to the flash follower. The display is adapted to provide a count of events in the signal sensed by the accelerometric transducer which surpass the preset threshold value. The second circuit includes an r.m.s. converter for providing the r.m.s. value of the signal obtained on the output of the amplifier.

Abstract: A method of improving solvent vapor containment in a process for extruding a solvent-polymer mixture into a process vessel operated substantially at atmospheric pressure while continuously removing solvent vapor and polymer product from said process vessel is disclosed. The improvement involves connecting, by means of a passage, the process vessel with a containment tank, which containment tank is provided at the bottom thereof with means for solvent vapor removal and recovery. The top of the containment tank is provided with an atmospheric vent to ensure that the solvent vapor in the containment tank is at atmospheric pressure. The passage is further provided with a vapor siphon breaker to prevent siphoning of the solvent vapor from the containment tank back into the process vessel.
