Abstract: A process is disclosed for the manufacture of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, FC-134a, more particularly for its manufacture from 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-chloroethane, FC-133a, by reaction with a high fluoride content antimony pentahalide.
Abstract: Hybrid star polymers with functional acrylic arms made by group transfer polymerization and crosslinked cores made by condensation reactions with the functional groups on the arms.
Abstract: A connector mounting system allows a measure of lateral motion for a connector relative to its printed circuit board to accommodate any thermal expansion of the board. A mounting bracket is connected between the connector and the printed circuit board and includes openings through which guide members extend, the openings having a larger dimension in at least the lateral dimension of the printed circuit board than that of the corresponding dimension of the guide member to allow a measure of lateral clearance and movement of the bracket relative the guide member. Each guide member includes a flange portion that captures the bracket and constrains the bracket and the connector from torque-induced movement where the connectors are not mounted in the direct line of force for either inserting or extracting the connector.
Abstract: An ostomy system in which a third element is employed to absorb pressure when an ostomy pouch is mechanically secured to a body side portion adhesively secured to the body. The third element is a split-ring which can be secured around a body side rib coupling member. The split-ring includes an edge portion that fits in a groove in the outer rib wall and includes an angled outwardly projecting rim so that one or more fingers can be inserted between the rim and the body side surface while the pouch is coupled. Following coupling of the pouch, the split-ring can be removed to leave a two-piece ostomy system in place on the body.
Abstract: The article, typically for use in man-made satellites, has high emissivity and low reflectance in the thermal infra-red wavebands between 6 and 30 microns, and also in the visible wavebands. The article is employed either to cover individual solar-cells, thereby protecting the cells from ionizing radiation and micro-meteoroids, and to protect the adhesive bonding the article to the solar cell from u-v light, or as a thermal control mirror to prevent heat build-up. The article has good emissivity in the thermal waveband regions, so the cell can be maintained at a relatively low temperature.
Abstract: Apparatus for developing a latent electrostatic image on the image bearing surface of an imaging member using a liquid toner is characterized by a toning station having a toning member therein. The toning member has a conductive and a nonconductive element thereon. The nonconductive element is disposed upstream of the conductive element in the direction of movement along the path of travel of the image bearing surface through the toning station. The conductive element is connected to a bias voltage so that the image is toned first in the absence of a bias followed by toning in the presence of a bias voltage. Laminar toner flow is maintained in the direction of movement of the image bearing surface during the contact of the surface with the toner.
Abstract: A tie-down device is disclosed herein having a movable car slidably carried on a stationary track which includes a spring biased vertically movable latch on the car operable to be insertably received into a selected one of a plurality of openings on said track for releasably retaining the car in a critical location on the track. The car further includes an attachment arrangement such as a tongue-in-groove construction for mounting on the track and a securement loop universally carried on a car flange for attachment to a tie-down line or cord.

Abstract: A process is provided for preparing a 7-oxabicycloheptane amino alcohol intermediate of the general structure ##STR1## which is useful in preparing thromboxane A.sub.2 receptor antagonists. This intermediate is prepared by reacting mesoanhydride with an aryl amine ##STR2## wherein R is alkyl, CH.sub.2 OH, CO.sub.2 H or CO.sub.2 alkyl, to form the acid ##STR3## which is reduced by treatment with lithium aluminum hydride or diisobutylaluminum hydride or Red-Al to form the alcohol ##STR4## wherein R.sup.1 is CH.sub.2 OH when R is CO.sub.2 H, CO.sub.2 alkyl or CH.sub.2 OH, and R.sup.1 is alkyl when R is alkyl; where in the above alcohol R.sup.1 is CH.sub.2 OH, such alcohol compound is treated with an alkyl chloroformate in the presence of base such as an alkali metal alkoxide to form the alcohol ##STR5## which undergoes cleavage by treatment with alkali metal, ammonia and acid to form the amino alcohol intermediate.Where in the above alcohol R.sup.

Abstract: Process for the production of hydrated aluminae through the precipitation of aluminum hydroxide in a reactor by the reaction of an aluminum compound soluble in a polar solvent with a precipitating agent, also solubilized in the polar solvent, in constant conditions of pH, temperature, concentration and agitation; concentration of the suspension of precipitated aluminum hydroxide; crystallization in an alkaline pH, essentially constant; separation of the crystallized aluminum hydroxide, for later washing and drying. The product obtained is homogeneous and with excellent characteristics for utilization in the manufacturing of catalysts and catalytic supports. The process can be applied, advantageously, in the treatment of the acid waste from processes which utilize Friedel-Crafts type reactions, obtaining, in addition to the hydrated alumina, a liquid effluent with low metal contents.

Abstract: A plating bath and process for electroplating coatings of palladium nickel alloys on a conductive substrate at current densities in the range of 10 amps/sq. ft. to 150 amps/sq. ft. wherein the palladium content of the alloy remains substantially constant despite current density variations during plating. The alloy composition stability is achieved by adding at least about 15 parts per million of iodide and/or iodate ions to the plating bath. The as-plated alloy has a thin surface layer which contains iodide at or near the surface.
