Abstract: A process for producing anhydrous sodium cyanide crystals by absorbing hydrogen cyanide synthesis gas that contains oxides of carbon and water in aqueous sodium hydroxide and crystallizing the sodium cyanide solution that results from the absorption. The sodium carbonate that forms in the absorption is not removed prior to crystallization.
Abstract: An illumination device for producing uniform illumination of a surface, comprising several parallel optical conductors which are placed above an optically reflecting surface, and whose reflecting outside sheath is removed locally at least in such a way that the light thereby emerging from the optical conductor is reflected by the reflecting surface to the surface to be illuminated. The optical conductors are spaced at such intervals and placed at such a distance above the reflecting surface that the light reflected by the reflecting surface can reach the surface to be illuminated on the other side of the optical conductors through the space between the optical conductors in such a way that the most uniform possible illumination of said surface is obtained.
Abstract: An optical switching system, wherein the input channels carrying packetized data are switched one-by-one at high bit rate to output channels through an optical switching network. The packets of a generic input channel are time compressed, converted into optical signals and, at suitable instants, sent to an optical switching network to be switched to the desired output channel, they are then reconverted into electrical signals and expanded to their original duration. A centralized processor controls the channel switching through the switching network by means of a driving circuit.

Abstract: A system for converting heat to kinetic energy, the system characterized by a fluid driven motor responsive to an introduction of high pressure fluid for driving a selected power train, and a pressure generator for introducing the high pressure fluid to the motor. The pressure generator includes a plurality of boiler tubes for receiving low pressure fluid, a fire box for successively transferring heat to the boiler tubes, and a pressure equalizer for incrementally equalizing pressures within the boiler tubes, whereby an introduction of low pressure fluid, followed by an efficient conversion to a high pressure fluid, is facilitated within the system.

Abstract: A portable, automatic serving device for table tennis is provided which includes a robot server and ball capture net. The robot includes a serving head which is mounted for rotation with respect to the body along a plurality of axes. The head is provided with balls from a passageway in the robot operatively connected between the head and the base of the robot. A collapsible net is provided for capturing balls returned by a player. The robot is positioned within and cooperates with the net so that return balls are fed automatically to the head. The robot is operated by three motors, which may be controlled individually to serve sequentially a plurality of balls to a player for practice or for sport. The robot construction provides for a variety of ball delivery techniques, all of which are controlled simply during operation.

Abstract: Polyoxymethylene/thermoplastic polyurethane compositions having 5-40 weight percent polyurethane are modified by incorporating therein 0.05-1.0 weight percent of a polycarbodiimide (or a mixture of polycarbodiimides) having a molecular weight of about 1000 and containing units of the formula ##STR1## where n has an average value of about 3, to improve resistance to discoloration and decomposition.
Abstract: A dietary fiber material, e.g. corn bran, having improved color stability is provided. The material is esterified prior to bleaching to decrease the color of the material. Typical dietary fiber materials are the fiber materials produced by the milling of plant seeds such as cereal grains and oilseeds. The esterification of the dietary fiber material corn bran prior to bleaching results in a lighter colored dietary fiber product having enhanced acceptance as a dietary fiber supplement in a variety of food products.
Abstract: An aqueous bath or slurry for use in forming a shell mould, comprising from 20 to 40 wt. % of colloidal silica, from 20 to 40 wt. % of finely ground zircon, from 15 to 25 wt. % of silica sand, from 15 to 35 wt. % of finely ground fused silica, and from 1 to 5 wt. % of finely ground cristobalite. The shell-mould is made by repeatedly dipping a wax model into the bath or slurry to form a coating of the desired thickness, and then thermally treating the shell-mould so formed by placing the mould into an oven, heating the oven to a temperature between 1050.degree. C. and 1200.degree. C., maintaining the temperature for a period of between 1 and 2 hours, and then allowing the oven and mould to cool to ambient temperature. The mould obtained contains from 10 to 30 wt. % of cristobalite at ambient temperature.

Abstract: An apparatus for spinning includes a polymer inlet zone and a spinneret assembly. A first metering pump for pumping a first set of molten polymer streams of equal flow rate to the polymer inlet zone and a second metering pump for pumping a second set of two molten polymer streams of equal flow rate to the polymer inlet zone are provided. The second pump having twice the capacity of the first pump. The spinneret assembly comprises a pair of spinnerets interchangeably locatable in the spinning pack. One of the spinnerets is adapted to combine the first set of streams to produce three ends of filaments and the other of the spinnerets is adapted to combine each of the first streams with a respective one of the second streams to provide two ends of filaments.
Abstract: Method of mounting refined contact surfaces on a substrate and substrate provided with such contact surfaces.A method for mounting contact surface elements on the ends of strip conductors along the edge of a substrate. A solder mixed with adhesive is applied to the soldering surface at ends of the strip conductors. Contact surfaces each having a refined, f.i. gold plated, top surface and an activated, f.i. tin plated, bottom surface, are placed respectively on each soldering surface. Heat is applied to melt the solder particles and provide a good electrical connection between each surface contact and strip conductor. The substrate mounted with the contact elements has a plurality of components mounted on one surface thereof and interconnected by the strip conductors. The substrate is adapted to be plugged into an edge connector along its edge with the mounted contact surface elements.
Abstract: A shielded access apparatus for enabling personnel access to an enclosure which is shielded to prevent propagation of electromagnetic energy into and out of the enclosure. The apparatus includes an access enclosure of electrically conductive material and first and second openings in the enclosure. A shield is positioned in the enclosure between the first and second openings for preventing radiated electromagnetic energy passing through one of the openings from travelling along a straight line to the other opening. Absorption material lines the interior of the enclosure and absorbs radiated electromagnetic energy passing through the enclosure.
