  • Patent number: 4782138
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for selectively separating the alpha-lactalbumin from the proteins of whey; the process comprises a heat treatment of the whey previously concentrated to a dry matter content of 10 to 40% by weight, and acidified to a pH of less than 4, preferably from 3 to 3.5, said heat treatment being carried out at a temperature not exceeding 75.degree. C., preferably from 45.degree. to 75.degree. C., for a duration of 15 seconds to 1 hour so as selectively to precipitate the alpha-lactalbumin; this heat treatment is followed by the recovery of the alpha-lactalbumin in the form of a precipitate and possibly of the other lacto-proteins remaining in solution in the residual whey. The process presents the advantage of being simple to carry out and being of low cost.

  • Patent number: 4779382
Abstract: A mechanism for mounting a sanding disk to the spindle of a portable right-angled grinder that will allow the connection to be released without extra tools. The mechanism consists essentially of a hollow spindle (18), of a tensioning anchor (22) that is accommodated inside the spindle (18) such that it can slide back and forth axially subject to an activating mechanism (54) but cannot rotate, and of two flanges that accommodate the sanding disk (28) between them, one of which, a mating flange that constitutes a support (20), is rigidly secured to the spindle, and the other of which, the tensioning flange (26), is loosely secured to the tensioning anchor (22). Between mutually facing demarcating surfaces (34 & 36) of the tensioning anchor (22) and the spindle (18) is a space (39) that communicates with another space (44) in the tensioning anchor (22). The spaces (39 & 44) are full of a plastic material (40) that can transmit force hydraulically.

  • Patent number: 4780162
Abstract: A method is disclosed for repairing laminates such as aircraft transparency windows in which two plies of the laminate have become separated and created a void. The method of the invention basically comprises the steps of selecting an adhesive having a viscosity sufficient to flow into the void formed between the two separated plies and then introducing an amount of the adhesive into the void such that the adhesive fills substantially all of the void thereby repairing the laminate. The preferred technique for introducing the adhesive into the void comprises the steps of filling a syringe with an amount of the adhesive, affixing a hypodermic needle to the syringe, and forcing the needle into the void of the delaminated area. The syringe is then operated to force the adhesive into the void until the void is completely filled with the adhesive.

  • Patent number: 4779355
Abstract: Apparatus and process for drying coated surfaces, e.g. inked surfaces, with improved efficiency. The apparatus comprises an air-directing baffle which has vortex-inducing means, e.g. grooves or slots therein. The slots are arranged substantially perpendicular to the general direction of flow of drying gas through a drying zone formed by the baffle and the surface being dried. The vortices provide both (1) improved drying efficiency at the interface between coated surface and drying gas and (2) effective dissipation of kinetic energy from the drying gas as it traverses the drying zone. Less energy is required to exhaust spent drying gas from the drying zone while effectively preventing the gas from escaping into the environment. In dual-drier systems, fed by centrally located air nozzles, means is provided to avoid an asperating effect which tends to suck the web toward the apparatus.
