Abstract: A multichannel digital speech synthesizer comprises a pulse generator storing periodic and aperiodic excitation signals to be processed in a lattice filter according to weighting parameters, such as gain and reflection coefficients, transmitted from a computer via a control unit and a plurality of input modules assigned to respective output channels. Each input module includes a resettable counter for timing the emissions of periodic or aperiodic excitation signals, to generate a voiced or an unvoiced speech element, and for requesting a new set of parameters from the computer upon detecting the end of a validity interval for a current set of parameters; the module further comprises a pair of buffer memories alternating in reading and writing operations under the control of the counter to ensure a continuous flow of parameter sets to the filter.

Abstract: An emitter of unbalanced pulse-modulated energy, specifically a laser, has a feedback circuit including a first branch detecting the mean amplitude of the emitted energy and a second branch detecting the peak amplitude of its pulses. The second branch includes a band-pass filter, centered on the pulse cadence, followed by a peak detector which may comprise a coherent demodulator driven by a square wave whose frequency corresponds to that cadence. The peak detector generates a control signal for a pulse former whose output signals are superimposed upon a biasing signal from the first branch before being fed to the modulating input of the energy emitter.

Abstract: The seat and back of a seating unit are each formed of a plurality of cushioned upholstered elements which extend between a pair of L-shaped support members to provide continuous back and seat surfaces. The L-shaped members have an elliptical cross section which includes two hollow semielliptical portions, a central wall connecting these portions, and two longitudinal channels on opposite sides of the central wall. The upholstered elements are attached to the L-shaped members by plastic guiding strips which ride in the channels.
Abstract: A pile-cutting machine for cutting multi-sided piles, such as square piles, having a frame which can be clamped to the pile at a desired location, a carriage mounted on the frame for movement in a continuous path around the pile and a cutting head carried by the carriage with a power-driven cutter positioned relative to the carriage to be at full cutting depth in a pile as the carriage moves along a straight side of the pile and, thereafter, to automatically withdraw from the pile as the carriage swings in travelling around a corner of the pile and subsequently move to full cutting depth in the pile as the carriage advances along the next straight side of the pile.
Abstract: Batteries, accumulators or electrochemical generators of electric energy, the negative electrode (anode) of which consists of at least one alkaline halide, in aqueous or alkaline solution, or of one metallic halide, and one auxiliary electrode collecting current.The positive electrode (cathode) consists of at least one metallic hydroxide or oxide which can be in solution in the electrolyte and which, preactivated or regenerated continuously by the presence of air or oxygen introduced into the alkaline solution bathing the cathode, supplies the hydroxyl ions necessary for the oxidation of the halide constituting the anode. Furthermore, some compounds of the anode, according to the invention, can be thermally or photonically regenerated.Various applications of these devices, in particular sea water, can be implemented for the supply of electric energy, using easily available and cheap fuel.

Abstract: A process for automatically venting noncondensable contaminants from a number of process vessels heated with an organic heat transfer vapor medium involves monitoring the temperature at each vessel and intermittently venting all vessels simultaneously in response to a temperature drop at any one vessel. By venting intermittently for a predetermined period energy is conserved. Equipment costs are minimized by simultaneous venting through a single control valve.

Abstract: A corrugated plate is disclosed which has trapezoidal corrugations defined by alternating, side by side, relatively thick corrugation peaks and corrugation troughs and relatively thin, inclined corrugation sides which interconnect edges of adjoining peaks and troughs. A method is also disclosed for corrugating the corrugated plate from flat sheet by providing a flat sheet with spaced apart, longitudinally extending, relatively thick sections which thereafter define the corrugation peaks and corrugation troughs or for forming the thick sections by providing a relatively thin sheet and folding over portions of the thin sheet in the areas which ultimately form the corrugation peaks and corrugation troughs so that the latter are defined by a plurality of staked sheet layers.

Abstract: A portable coaxial cable trimmer (10) for trimming coaxial cable (12) with shielding (36), insulation (38), and a conductor (40) comprises a hollow, elongated housing (18) with a laterally disposed port (44). A first bushing (22) is attached to the end of the housing (18) for centering the cable (12). A first cutter (30) is secured in the housing (18) for trimming the insulation (38) and shielding (36) to produce a shaving (42) which is discharged from the housing (18) through a port (44). A second bushing (46), secured in the housing (18), centers the exposed conductor (40) of the trimmed cable (12). A second cutter (48) disposed in the housing (18) rounds and cuts the end of the exposed conductor (40). A device for rotating the housing, such as an air drill or an electric drill (14) can be attached to the cable trimmer (10) for rotating the housing (18) with respect to the cable (12).

The compounds may be used, e.g., to prevent the aggregation of blood platelets.Novel intermediates produced in the above method are also provided.

Abstract: Two mutually independent clocks at a transmitting node and a receiving node of a routing network in a packet-switching telephone system are correlated by a synchronizing device associated with the receiving node whose processor, at the beginning of voice transmission between the two nodes, decodes a label of an incoming packet to determine its time of departure t.sub.s from the transmitting node whereupon a control unit at the receiving node adjusts the local clock in conformity with an estimated reading t.sub.x of the remote clock. This adjustment takes into account only fixed network parameters determining a minimum transit time for the packets by introducing a basic delay T.sub.d. After the correlation, an initial packet of a sequence representing a period of coherent speech --termed talkspurt--is stored for a time sufficient to augment the basic delay T.sub.d by a supplemental time lag T.sub.

Abstract: A cartridge filter is provided in which a powdered filter medium is encapsulated between screens which are sealed to the side wall of the cartridge. The side wall has a flange which engages the upper surface of a holder into which the cartridge fits.
