Abstract: The invention comprises an improved cathode for a chloralkali cell having grains of alpha-iron adherent to the surface of the cathode, and a process for making the cathode which comprises depositing grains of alpha-iron onto the surface of an electrically conductive cathode substrate in an electrical cell. The invention also provides a method for lowering the operating voltage of a chloralkali electrolysis cell which comprises adding iron particles to the cathode compartment of the cell.
Abstract: In a voice operated gain adjust for a voice processor included an input range adjust (10), a sixteen channel amplifier (12), an analog to digital converter (14) and a microcomputer (16). An audio signal including voice signals and background noise is applied to the input of the range adjust (10) and the amplifier (12). The output of the input range adjust (10) is applied through the A/D converter (14) to the microcomputer (16). The microcomputer (16) distinguishes voice signals from background noise and controls the gain of the amplifier (12) in accordance with the amplitude of the voice signals. Also, the microcomputer (16) controls the gain of the input range adjust (10) so that the input signal to the A/D converter (14) is within the operating range of the converter (14).
Abstract: Mammalian collagenase is inhibited by compounds having the formula ##STR1## and salts thereof, wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or alkanoyl of 2 to 10 carbon atoms;R.sub.2 is hydroxy, amino, or ##STR2## R.sub.3 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, ##STR3## R.sub.4 is hydroxy, amino, arginine, leucine, glutamine, alanine or glycine; andm is 0 or an integer of 1 to 9.
Abstract: An arrangement for forming successive layers of sheets of paper and the like from a stream of individual sheets supplied in succession to a collecting station by a supply conveyor, and for transferring the formed layers to a continuously advancing discharge conveyor, includes an abutment capable of interrupting the advancement of the supplied sheets to form a layer from a predetermined number of sheets, and a clamping device which grips the layer of sheets and transfers the same to the discharge conveyor. The arrangement includes a drive including a transmission, particularly a kinematic linkage transmission, causing the abutment and clamping device to perform a preselected succession of movements, and a prime mover which is kinematically separated from the main drive of the machine in which the arrangement is used and thus from the drive of the supply and discharge conveyors.

Abstract: A thermal cut-out which is adapted to open an electrical circuit in response to an excessive rise in temperature associated with the circuit protected by said cut-out. Said cut-out comprising a hollow body of electrically insulating material and having an opening through which a pair of contact members are put into said hollow body. A plug of electrically insulating material closing said opening and stressing the contacts to a condition in which they are biased apart. Said contact members being retained in engagement by an element as long as its temperature has not reached a predetermined temperature. Said element being made from a material which deforms or collapse at said predetermined temperature so that it cannot retain said biased contacts any longer in engagement and permits the contacts to open.
Abstract: An adaptor for attachment to a plunger lock unlocking tool of a type which grasps the external surface of the unlocking pin of a plunger-type lock and pulls the pin to the unlocking position, said adaptor enabling the tool to be used to unlock a plunger lock of the type in which the unlocking member is a hollow pin which is grasped internally for pulling to the unlocking position.
Abstract: Control of insects using (1) cyano-(3-phenoxyphenyl)methyl 4-chloro-.alpha.-(1-methylethyl)benzeneacetate or (3-phenoxybenzyl)cis-trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanec arboxylate, and (2) a compound such as N,N'-[thiobis(methylamino)carbonyloxy]-bis[ethanimidothioic acid], dimethyl ester.
Abstract: Specimen clamps or grips for locating and releasably retaining a specimen for testing on a dynamic mechanical analyzer which analyzer is of conventional construction with the improvement being in the specimen clamps.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for welding or brazing of sheetmetal or plate covered with a temperature degradable protective coat, such as zinc or plastic. A cooling saddle supplied with liquid nitrogen is arranged on the side of the plate opposite that adjacent the welding torch. During the formation of the weld, gaseous nitrogen escapes through holes in the saddle to cool the protective coat and keep it from melting or volatilizing.

Abstract: A dual mode log periodic monopole antenna for simultaneously receiving and transmitting radio frequency energy that includes a conducting cone (10) with four log periodic monopole elements (12 through 15) extending radially therefrom and operational in a first mode. Four additional log periodic elements (16 through 19) are interspersed between the elements (12 through 15) and are also connected to and extend radially from the conducting cone (10). The second four log periodic elements (16 through 19) are interconnected for operation in a second mode. Each of the eight log periodic monopole elements (12 through 19) consists of a single planar substrate (24) of a dielectric material having a conducting pattern (26) thereon. A coaxial cable (22) is connected to the monopole elements (12 through 15) and a coaxial cable (20) is connected to the monopole elements (16 through 19).
Abstract: A method for measuring continuously shrinkage and crimp development in a long continuous sample of yarn involves the steps providing a zero-tension loop, applying a standard tension, then developing crimp in a single downward pass through a hot air chamber providing a second zero-tension loop and thereafter retensioning it. The shrinkage and crimp development is calculated from differential speeds of rolls advancing the yarn.
Abstract: A machine for terminating flat multi-conductor transmission line cable to a connector. The machine includes a wire locator for providing semi-automatic positioning of cable shield wires and signal wires for terminations to a buss bar and connector tails respectively. The machine facilitates a method of mass termination of cable wires to a connector, which includes first stripping the cable to expose shield and signal wires, then positioning the cable wires in the machine for termination of shield and signal wires to the connector. The signal wires are terminated first to terminal tails extending from the connector. This is followed by the reverse bending of the shield wires over the buss bar and termination of the shield wires to the bar. In this fashion, the multiple wires of the cable may be simultaneously positioned, and respective sets of signal and shield wires mass terminated by the machine.
