Abstract: Insulation particularly suitable for high voltage power cable consists essentially of low density polyethylene (or crosslinked polyethylene) and an effective amount of an alcohol of 6 to 24 carbon atoms which is a tree growth inhibitor capable of imparting at least a thousand-fold increase in electrical endurance as measured by an accelerated test procedure. Electrical trees can be initiated in the polyethylene in the presence of the alcohol. However, increased electrical endurance is obtained through inhibition of continued tree growth at that site.A precursor composition for a preferred insulation contains (i) low density polyethylene, (ii) a peroxide crosslinking agent, and (iii) an alcohol of 8 to 12 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A computerized tomographic apparatus is described in which a wide fan of radiation scans a patient by rotating therearound, the fan being substantially flat and being maintained in alignment with a selected cross-sectional slice of a patient's body. Radiation emergent from the body along many substantially linear paths across the slice is detected by a detector means including a vacuum tube device containing a photo-cathode and, spaced therefrom, semiconductive means. Electrons emitted from the photo-cathode in response to light incident thereon (the light emanating from X-ray sensitive scintillating material) are accelerated towards the semiconductive means and impact thereon causing the generation of electrical signals indicative of the amount of X-radiation falling on the scintillating material.

Abstract: In a method of examining a body by means of penetrating radiation a source is arranged to provide a fan shaped spread of the radiation and a detector examines the intensity of a plurality of individual beams of radiation defined from the fan. The source and detector are orbited about the body so that the beams are provided at a plurality of angles relative to the body. In the associated processing, the data signals from the detectors are combined so that each combined signal relates to two beams 180.degree. to each other in the orbital movement. A further selection is also made of the data signals so that they are provided to a further processing stage in sets for which each set is of data signals relating to beams which are substantially parallel to each other.
Abstract: Derivatives of pyrrolidinecarboxaldehyde and piperidinecarboxaldehyde, and intermediates therefor, which have the general formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, lower alkanoyl or ##STR2## R.sub.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or hydroxy;R.sub.3 is hydroxymethyl, di(lower alkoxy)methyl or formyl;n is 1 or 2;and their bisulfite addition products, are useful as hypotensive agents.
Abstract: Hexafluoropropene is reacted with liquid sulfur trioxide in the presence of boric oxide, boron trichloride, boron trifluoride, tri(lower alkyl) borate, boron trioxychloride or boron trioxyfluoride at from 0.degree. C. to 150.degree. C. to form perfluoroallyl fluorosulfate and the sultone thereof. The perfluoroallyl fluorosulfate can be homopolymerized or copolymerized with various fluoroethylenes to form resins useful as ion exchange resins or catalysts. The fluorosulfate groups on the resins can be hydrolyzed to form carboxylic acid groups or various corresponding salts. The sultone of perfluoroallyl fluorosulfate can be rearranged to form .beta.-fluorocarbonyl-.beta.-fluorosulfonyl-trifluorethyl fluorosulfate.
Abstract: Computerized tomographic apparatus is described in which a radiation source and an associated detector array execute, concomitantly, reciprocating lateral scanning movements and rotational scanning movements relative to a patient's body, the scanning movements being effected in the plane of a cross-sectional slice of the body which intersects the patient's heart. The patient is located so that the heart is substantially at the center of the scanning movements. The lateral movements are substantially sinusoidal, arranged so that a substantially linear portion of the movement occurs when the source irradiates the heart, and the rotational movement is continuous or substantially continuous and any pauses are only brief, and during alternate lateral scans when the aforementioned substantially linear portions of movement occur. The scanning movements are synchronized to the patient's heart beats so that the heart is irradiated during a quiescent phase of its movement.

Abstract: A one-piece, integrally molded plastic carrier adapted for supporting a plurality of bottles (such as beverage bottles) in a space envelope which is essentially the same as that space previously utilized by cardboard cartons. In an embodiment for carrying six bottles, a pair of non-planar handle supports extend upwardly from the base, with each of the supports resting in the central space between groupings of four bottles that are arranged to form a "square". The handle supports may be generally cylindrical or T-shaped, or a combination thereof; but in any case they are non-planar. The moment of inertia of the handle supports is high, so that the stiffness of the carrier is correspondingly high. A substantial slot is provided in the base between the two handle supports, and the slot is sized so that two bottle carriers may be nested together--with the handle of one carrier passing through the slot and into the bottom of another carrier.
