Abstract: A firearm breech locking mechanism which includes a receiver having a longitudinal track guiding an actuating rod in reciprocating motion, and two guide slots for guiding a bolt carrier member mechanically coupled to the operating rod. Two roller receiving slots are also formed in the receiver member. A roller is disposed in these slots. It extends transversely to the direction of motion of the operating rod. A cam surface on the operating rod raises the roller as the operating rod reaches its forwardmost position to thereby lock the bolt relative to the receiver and shell chamber. As the operating rod is moved rearward, a cam surface on the bolt carrier forces the roller to its unlocked position. The invention further includes a latch pivotally secured to the bolt member which cooperates with a recess formed along one of the guide slots.
Abstract: A fluoropolymer composition useful in the manufacture of cured fluoropolymer articles can be made by mixing a specified copolymer with an organic peroxide such as a dialkyl peroxide, and preferably also adding a divalent metal oxide and/or hydroxide and a suitable coagent such as triallyl isocyanurate. This composition contains a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing a small amount (e.g. about 0.5-3 mole %) of a bromine-containing olefin with certain fluorine-containing compounds.

Abstract: A method is provided for recovering a polyether antibiotic, such as lonomycin, monensin or ionomycin from a fermentation broth, wherein the polyether is first extracted with a water-immiscible solvent, such as ethyl acetate, and the resulting extracts concentrated, dissolved in aqueous methanol and then extracted into hexane, benzene or mixtures thereof. The polyether is thereby recovered in crystalline form directly from the latter extract.

Abstract: Steroidal [16.alpha., 17-d]cyclohexene-21-carboxylic acid esters can be prepared from 21-hydroxy-.DELTA..sup.16 -steroids by first converting the starting steroid to a 21-carboxylic acid ester -.DELTA..sup.16 -steroid and then fusing the cyclohexene ring to the 16,17-positions of the intermediate.
Abstract: 1,4-Butynediol is catalytically hydrogenated under conventional conditions to produce a reaction product containing 1,4-butanediol. This reaction product is then hydrogenated under acid conditions, i.e., pH 1-6 and temperatures of 120.degree.-150.degree. C., to produce a 1,4-butanediol product. Upon further separation, the 1,4-butanediol is practically free from compounds that would produce color when the diol is used to make polyesters.
Abstract: A ketone is reacted with an N,N-disubstituted-aminosulfur trifluoride in the presence of a polar solvent, preferably also in the presence of a polar catalyst, to produce a vinylene fluoride. Exemplary is the reaction of cholestan-3.beta.-ol-6-one-3-t-butyl ether with diethylaminosulfur trifluoride in the presence of fuming sulfuric acid and tetrahydrofuran to produce 6-fluorocholesterol.
Abstract: An iron-modified, platinum hydrogenation catalyst useful for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds is provided. The catalyst, having improved distribution of the metallic components on an oleophilic carbon support as shown by ESCA analysis, is prepared by depositing a platinum compound (oxide, hydroxide or carbonate) on the carbon support at a temperature in the range of 55.degree.-95.degree. C., preferably 90.degree.-95.degree. C., and then reducing the compound to platinum metal, preferably with formaldehyde, at a temperature less than about 35.degree. C. The iron in the catalyst is present and deposited as its oxide or hydroxide either at the same temperature as the platinum compound or at a temperature less than about 35.degree. C. Using such a catalyst to reduce halogen-substituted nitro aromatic compounds to the corresponding amines results in low dehalogenation, low tar formation and hydroxylamine accumulation. For nonhalogenated nitro aromatic reductions, the catalyst minimizes ring reduction.
Abstract: Nontacky, elastomeric shaped objects (e.g., pellets or filaments) comprising a normally tacky, uncured elastomer having an integral, porous coating of silicic or aluminic acid polymer can be prepared by bringing shaped bodies of a normally tacky, uncured elastomer latex into contact with an aqueous bath containing a soluble coagulating salt for the latex, and a silicic or aluminic acid polymer, and washing and drying the resulting coated shaped objects. The shaped objects are highly porous before washing and drying, and some porosity remains even after washing and drying.
Abstract: An apparatus for transmitting force between a tow cart and an in-floor conveyor that includes a pin that pivots out of engagement with the conveyor when the cart meets an obstruction. The motion of the pin when disengaging from the conveyor places another pin in position to engage another drawing position of the conveyor. The pins are movable along their longitudinal axes to follow the profile of the conveyor when moving into and out of engagement with it.

Abstract: A method and system for processing molten slag is characterized in that molten slag is first spread onto a slag receiving means which is substantially made of a steel plate of desired thickness and is tiltably mounted on the floor of a roofed slag processing factory and is subsequently air and water-cooled such that the slag is solidified and finally is water-quenched in a cooling water pit whereby the resulting solidified slag is of practical use which neither collapses nor produces dust.
Abstract: In a variant of the type of radiographic apparatus known as CT scanners a scanning X-ray tube is used to provide a planar fan-shaped distribution and to scan the distribution in its plane. Means are also provided to rotate the system about an axis perpendicular to the plane. In order to properly relate operation of the system, it is desirable to monitor the progress of the tube scan. This invention disposes a detector into the radiation and a pair of gratings acting together to modulate the radiation, incident on the detector, in relation to the scan position. The detector output is processed to give pulses which can be used to regulate the tube scan.
Abstract: A non-marking type method and apparatus for optimizing the recovery, at on-line speeds, of salvageable sheet product from a large width web, utilized in conjunction with a radiation scanning type inspection system.

Abstract: To translate a train of binary electrical pulses into a multilevel luminous signal transmissible at a lower frequency, groups of two or more electrical pulses are temporarily stored in a shift register and then concurrently read out to a set of 2.sup.n -1 amplifiers feeding as many light emitters where n is the number of pulses per group. The connections between the shift-register stages and the amplifiers are so arranged that the collective intensity of the several light emitters assumes one of 2.sup.n possible levels according to the binary value of the pulse group stored in the register. The light sources jointly illuminate an optical fiber, with deviation of some of their rays to electro-optical feedback circuits for controlling the gain of the amplifiers to stabilize their output currents.
