  • Patent number: 4179634
Abstract: Rotor for a magnetomotive device in the form of an annular casting having a cavity or slot formed in the periphery thereof. The cavity includes locating surfaces. A permanent magnet is held in clamping relation within said cavity between a pair of pole pieces which include arcuate pole faces coaxial with the rotor. Retaining pins disposed in registered recesses of the cavity and pole pieces hold said pole pieces in said slot and urge surface portions thereof radially against said locating surfaces which are oriented to cause the pole pieces to exert clamping forces against the magnet disposed therebetween with the pole faces disposed in coaxial relation in the rotor.

  • Patent number: 4179672
Abstract: A phase modulation system is described in which the phase of a carrier wave can assume one of a number of permitted values in each symbol period and wherein transitions between the permitted values occur at transition periods between symbol periods. Difficulties associated with phase transitions are reduced or overcome by storing or generating the transitions with a number of cycles of the carrier wave of the appropriate phase(s) on either side thereof, a wave train being built up by merging the corresponding oscillations of the same phase which succeed and preceed respectively two adjacent transitions.

  • Patent number: 4178642
Abstract: An artificial leg of the kind in which the shin portion and the knee portion are shaped from a block of wood or similar solid material, has the knee and shin portions connected by pairs of front and rear links, the effective length of the front links being less than that of the rear links and the connections between the links and the knee and shin portions being positioned so as to form an articulation of which the instantaneous center of rotation lies upon an ascending curve for a predetermined angle of relative rotation between the two portions of the leg from the fully extended position. The resultant joint provides a stable weight support until it has been flexed through the predetermined angle and is thereafter capable of flexure through more than a right angle.

  • Patent number: 4177953
Abstract: A chopping-raising-cleaning assembly for sugar cane harvesting machines in which the operations of cutting the cane into billets, cleaning of said billets and elevation and transport of the billets to a loading position is out by a billet chopping-throwing device in which one rotative or two fixed discharge ducts are attached. According to the present invention the cane is chopped into billets which are thrown into a cylinder having internal rotative fins that move the billets, throwing them upwardly through a tangential opening in the cylinder at a speed sufficient to allow the billets to go up through the corresponding duct, allowing the unloading of the billets on the transport vehicles. The cleaning of the billets is aerodynamically carried out assisted by an extracting fan disposed in each duct.

  • Patent number: 4178511
Abstract: This application describes a rotation-only CT scanner with beam deflections; the deflection and the rotation being so related as to permit the derivation of absorption data in groups focussed on respective "pivot points" outside the detector locus. Data derived from different detectors, but focussed on the same pivot point, relate to groups of paths, some of which overlap, and the overlap is used to compare the performances of different detectors. To reduce data handling, data provided by adjacent detectors can be combined.

  • Patent number: 4178548
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for operating a mobile communications transmitter/receiver type radio from a motorcycle or in another high ambient noise environment. A contact vibration transducer is provided for being coupled to the throat area of the communicator for generating a transmit audio signal responsive to the vibrations of the vocal cords talking. The transmit audio signal is then coupled to a modulator section of the communications transmitter for modulating the transmitter output. A voice operated relay is provided for switching the transmitter/receiver into and out of the transmit mode responsive to receiving the transmit audio signal from the contact vibration transducer. In this manner the transmit audio signal and the transmit/receive switching will be relatively impervious to the high ambient noise levels surrounding the communicator.

  • Patent number: 4178066
Abstract: Signals, especially short pulses, are transmitted by way of a series of aligned light guides with internally reflecting boundaries (i.e. fibers or foils), with interposition of two identical transparent elements each refracting incident rays from the proximal guide end toward the remote guide end along paths which intersect the common guide axis at points near the center of the respective element for angles of incidence close to zero and at points near the center of the opposite element for angles of incidence close to a critical angle .THETA..sub.M << 1 (in radians). The transparent elements could be planoconvex lenses, which may be divided into Fresnel zones, or holograms; they could also be replaced by an optically equivalent transparent body whose refractive index varies along a generally parabolic law with increasing distance from the axis.
