Abstract: The present invention relates to a system for detection of forest fires, based on the chemical analysis of the atmosphere through optic spectroscopy. The smoke originated from a fire has a chemical composition different from that of a normal atmosphere. This chemical composition is determined by the analysis of light absorption, which passes through the smoke, in its different wavelengths, carried out by a spectrometer. In this case, the spectrometer is associated to a telescope and solar light is used as the light source allowing the detection of smoke originated from a fire in a specific area of the horizon. The maximum distance from which the smoke can be detected depends only on the potency of the telescope and may be of many kilometers. The installation of the system on a rotating support and the use of computational logarithms makes the detection in any point of the horizon possible, a completely autonomous way.

Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus for reducing a nitrogen oxide. In particular, it relates to the use of a gas analyzer to obtain information related to the compositional content of a multi-component gas mixture that contains a nitrogen oxide for the purpose of assisting in the control of the reduction. In particular, the apparatus provides control of the reaction of reduction, and, more particularly, control of the injection of a reducing agent into the gas mixture containing the nitrogen oxide. The apparatus enables the calculation of the amount of reducing agent to be injected in relation to information about the compositional content of the gas mixture, and a gas analyzer containing an array of chemo/electro-active materials may be used in conjunction therewith.
Abstract: Engineered strains of the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica capable of producing greater than 10% arachidonic acid (ARA, an ?-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid) in the total oil fraction are described. These strains comprise various chimeric genes expressing heterologous desaturases, elongases and acyltransferases, and optionally comprise various native desaturase and acyltransferase knockouts to enable synthesis and high accumulation of ARA. Production host cells are claimed, as are methods for producing ARA within said host cells.

Abstract: A method wherein an aqueous solution of a fluoride, an aqueous solution of a Group 2 or Group 3 metal salt, and an aqueous solution of a rare-earth metal dopant are combined in a plurality of continuous feed streams to form a series of precipitates of a rare-earth doped Group 2 or Group 3 metal fluoride, and wherein the member of the series differ by the concentration of the associated rare-earth dopant cation in the feed stream, and wherein the series so prepared defines the threshold concentration range above which operation of the process results in a minimization of the particle size variability caused by small perturbations in the concentration of the rare-earth dopant.
