  • Publication number: 20080089820
Abstract: A method for providing ammonia (NH3) in an exhaust gas flow of an internal combustion engine includes generating nitrogen monoxide (NO) with a plasma generator, reversibly storing at least a portion of the nitrogen monoxide (NO), reducing at least a portion of the stored and/or generated nitrogen monoxide (NO) to form ammonia (NH3) in a first gas flow, and mixing the first gas flow with the exhaust gas flow. The method and a device for reducing nitrogen oxides advantageously increase the efficiency of an on-board plasma-assisted generation of ammonia, particularly for mobile applications, such as in motor vehicles, and reduces the consumption of fuel required therefor, in comparison to prior art devices and methods.

  • Publication number: 20080083214
Abstract: A honeycomb body includes an inlet end side and an outlet end side. Metal sheets are wound, intertwined and/or layered into a multiplicity of sheet metal layers being at least partially structured to form channels leading from the inlet end side to the outlet end side. Edges of at least some of the sheet metal layers have cutouts formed therein at the inlet end side and/or the outlet end side, resulting in a fissured structure of the inlet end side and/or the outlet end side. As a result, only the smooth metal sheets or only the structured metal sheets or both can be provided with the cutouts. Additionally, at least some of the metal sheets can be made of a porous material, in particular compressed metal fibers. Deposition of soot particles on the end sides of the honeycomb body is, to a large extent, prevented due to the cutouts.

  • Publication number: 20080041036
Abstract: A method for adding at least one, in particular liquid, reactant, to an exhaust gas stream of an internal combustion engine includes adding a reactant flow to the stream downstream of an element provided for an at least partial conversion and/or at least partial elimination of at least one component of the stream, so that at least part of the reactant flow impinges on the element. This achieves rapid evaporation of the reactant flow. Impinging on the element, which is hot during operation, i.e. at temperatures of 400° C. and more, causes rapid evaporation and, because of a preferably porous coating of the element, take-up of the reactant solution into the element with successive evaporation. Urea, in particular, can be evaporated quickly, effectively and virtually completely upon introduction into an exhaust system as a reducing agent for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides, in particular in a downstream SCR catalytic converter.

  • Publication number: 20080028747
Abstract: An exhaust gas system for an internal combustion engine includes an intake system and an exhaust outlet interconnected by an exhaust gas recirculation line having an exhaust treatment unit and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger has a first back pressure and the exhaust treatment unit has a second back pressure, smaller than the first back pressure. The exhaust treatment unit is disposed at such a first distance from the heat exchanger in flow direction that, during operation, a gas flow entering the exhaust treatment unit is homogenized. The exhaust gas system permits an advantageous configuration of a heat exchanger and an exhaust treatment unit, such as for example a honeycomb body in the exhaust gas recirculation line, in which both the heat exchanger and the exhaust treatment unit can have a smaller structure than in conventional systems. This reduces costs considerably for equipping such a system.

  • Publication number: 20080011054
Abstract: A method positions a sensor in a honeycomb body which is provided with hollow spaces that can be penetrated at least in part by an exhaust gas. The sensor is placed in an area of the honeycomb body in which at least one minimum hydrogen concentration occurs when the honeycomb body is operated in the emission system of a motor vehicle. The sensor positioning method allows the sensor to be placed in the honeycomb body in such a way that systematic errors that occur are kept as small as possible as a result of an inherent transverse sensitivity of the sensor to hydrogen. This applies especially to lambda probes. A honeycomb body contains the sensor which is placed so as to supply particularly reliable test data whose systematic error is as small as possible.

  • Publication number: 20080008631
Abstract: An exhaust gas system for an internal combustion engine includes a first exhaust treatment unit with a first back pressure and a second exhaust treatment unit with a second back pressure being higher than the first back pressure. The system advantageously enables the configuration of systems having two exhaust treatment units that are disposed one behind the other in flow direction. The first and/or second exhaust treatment unit can have a smaller construction due to the homogenization of flow. This applies, for example, when an oxidation-type catalytic converter is provided as the first exhaust treatment unit and when a particulate filter is provided as the second exhaust treatment unit. The homogenization of flow in the first exhaust treatment unit increases the conversion rate so that the first and/or second exhaust treatment unit can be provided with a smaller construction. This saves considerable costs when configuring such systems.

  • Publication number: 20040208803
Abstract: A honeycomb body for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine has an axial length and channels which are substantially separated from each other and through which an exhaust gas can flow. The honeycomb body includes at least one first and one second subset of channels. At least the cross-sectional areas of one of the subsets of channels differs along the axial length of the honeycomb body, so that a transient time of the exhaust gas in the different subsets of channels is different. The difference in transient time of the exhaust gas between the different subsets of channels can be used for damping sound waves having one or more wavelengths, so that noise is reduced in the exhaust system in order to purify the exhaust gas without needing additional components in the exhaust system. An exhaust system and a method for muffling sound therein are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20030200737
Abstract: A particle filter of metal foil has walls defining fluid flow channels with inlets and outlets. A first channel has an open entry cross section at a first end side extended partway into the first channel. A second channel has an open exit cross section substantially corresponding to the entry cross section. One of the walls of the first channel has filter passage perforations leading to the second channel. A closure in the first channel, opposite the entry cross section, toward a second end side, closes off the first channel to the fluid. A process for producing a particle filter from metal foil includes pulling the metal foil from an endless storage device. A joining element or strip is applied to the metal foil. The metal foil is shaped into subsequent channels. The metal foil is wound or stacked to form first and second channels in opposite directions. The first channel has an open entry cross section at the first end side extending partway into the first channel.
