  • Patent number: 6857815
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for power finishing freshly placed concrete in which the acoustic impedance of the treating equipment is made substantially equal to the acoustic impedance of the concrete slab being treated. Preferably, a powered, twin rotor riding trowel is provided with a pair of circular finishing pans that are attached to the conventional rotor blades used later in the finishing process. The pans are characterized by an acoustic impedance approximating the acoustic impedance of green concrete, thereby optimizing the energy transferred to the concrete. Preferred pans comprise ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) plastic. During troweling, the pans are frictionally revolved over the green concrete for finishing the surface without prematurely sealing the uppermost slab surface. Through the disclosed troweling method, a highly stable concrete surface results, and delamination is minimized. Alternative troweling uses pans coated with layered impedance matching material.

  • Publication number: 20050035840
Abstract: An electrical coil, particularly a shim coil for use in magnetic resonance imaging spectroscopy, is wound so that there are a plurality of layers with each layer having a plurality of turns. Insulating material is disposed between the turns of each layer. This reduces the capacitance between the turns and has the effect of increasing the self-resonant frequency of the coil. In another embodiment, the coil turn connections are effected so as to divide the overall coil into electrically separated portions and this also increases the self-resonant frequency of the coil.

  • Publication number: 20050037220
Abstract: The processes and resins of the present invention allow the extrusion of polymer products, such as polymer films, that have a reduced occurrence of surface aberrations, e.g., surface melt fracture and/or haze bands and/or haze. Preferably, the polymer products produced in accordance with the present invention are substantially free of surface aberrations even when manufactured under conditions of high sheer stress such as those conditions that occur at commercial production rates. In part, the present invention provides processes for polymer extrusion wherein the resins employed are treated using heat in an atmosphere sufficient to substantially eliminate the tendency to create surface aberrations. The resins can have reduced or substantially eliminated concentrations of low molecular weight components. In some embodiments, both the polymer resins and the extruded polymer products have reduced concentrations of processing aid(s), e.g.

  • Patent number: 6856162
Abstract: A combined AC/DC monitoring system simultaneously monitors an AC power supply and a DC power supply in a mobile unit. The monitoring system is electrically isolated from an AC input source through an AC isolation transformer. A microcontroller digitally provides various computed variables from various digitized input signals. The monitoring system simultaneously displays a plurality of the computed variables while the system monitors for various user-selected high/low conditions of the computed variables. The system monitors AC power surges and can alternately displays a high voltage level for a predetermined time and a low voltage level for a predetermined time. An algorithm determines whether the AC voltage is a true sine wave or otherwise. The system monitors DC current on the high side, or positive terminal, of a battery. User selectable DC shunts are provided to measure a range of DC currents.
