  • Patent number: 10024983
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of several new metal-loaded plastic scintillators are reported herein, comprising sterically and electronically isolated organotin additive complexes. Distance-dependent quenching relationships have been used as design criteria for the selection and synthesis of these organometallic additives, resulting in increased light yields and improved gamma-ray energy resolution values relative to previously reported PS/PVT examples. Fast scintillation decay properties have also been characterized in the prepared scintillators, rivaling the kinetics of stilbene-doped bibenzyl and BC-422Q-1% while providing higher light yields than these reference materials.

  • Patent number: 10017700
Abstract: An apparatus and method are described for high-yield fast pyrolysis of biomass feedstock to produce a liquid bio-oil product. A bubbling fluidized bed reactor is provided having an integrated, rapid quench apparatus for minimizing secondary cracking reactions that can otherwise lower the yield of bio-oil. A quench stream is provided inside the reactor to minimize the residence time that the product vapors spend at high temperature where cracking can occur. The quench stream is introduced downstream of the fluidized bed but still internal to the reactor. The fluidized bed medium is constrained to the bottom of the reactor and is not cooled by the quench stream.

  • Patent number: 10016726
Abstract: A method of recovering purified partly-hydrolyzed cellulose particles from a composition comprising agglomerated partly-hydrolyzed cellulose particles and an acid, using electrodialysis. The invention addresses the problem of reducing the acid to very low levels while avoiding the high capital and operating costs, high water usage and large filtration surface area or dilution time requirements of the prior art processes. Following dilution, concentration by centrifuging or settling, and/or dialysis of the composition, the composition is treated in an electrodialysis cell to remove ions, such as free sulfate from sulfuric acid. The method may include having an anion exchange resin in the feed compartment of the electrodialysis cell, adding a base to the receiving solution in the electrodialysis cell, and a second step of electrodialysis of the purified partly-hydrolyzed cellulose particles.
