  • Patent number: 7850831
Abstract: An electrochemical machining apparatus and method for machining a workpiece (60). The apparatus provides a pulse of electric power, which is conducted from the workpiece (60), to an electrolyte (68) flowing through a gap (62), and then to an electrode (58). Material is eroded from the workpiece (60) when the pulse of electric power is applied, thus machining the workpiece (60). The apparatus includes a power supply (12) to supply the electric power and a switching portion (40) for producing the pulse by switching the electric power ON and OFF. The switching portion (40) is capable of producing a pulse of electric power with a pulse duration of about 2 microseconds and a current of at least about 2800 amperes.

  • Patent number: 7832100
Abstract: A seal assembly and method for the manufacture thereof is provided. The seal assembly provides a dynamic fluid seal between a housing having a bore and a shaft having an outer running surface rotating within the bore. The seal assembly comprises a rigid carrier for supporting the seal assembly within the bore of the housing. A flexible member is mounted to the rigid carrier. The flexible member is formed from an elastomeric material that allows the flexible member to flex during use. A sealing element is retained by the flexible member about the outer running surface. The sealing element is formed from a non-polytetrafluoroethylene bearing grade plastic material having a hardness relatively greater than a hardness of the elastomeric material of the flexible member. The sealing element moves with the flexible member as the flexible member flexes. The sealing element extends along the outer running surface in a plurality of helically wound convolutions.

  • Patent number: 7829001
Abstract: A gasket assembly (20) and method for forming the gasket assembly (20) for sealing two mating surfaces (46,48) over a complex geometrical contact region. The gasket assembly (20) is formed by a hollow silicone rubber tube (22) having a naturally straight configuration but easily bent into complex configurations without kinking. The tube (22) is filled with a curable liquid rubber compound (30) and then the ends (24,26) of the tube (22) are joined in end-to-end fashion to form a continuous loop. The joined ends (24,26) of the tube (22) can be reinforced with a connector (34,134) and then locally cured on a preliminary operation so that the liquid rubber compound (30) does not escape. The tube (22) is then laid up in a mold (40) having a complex geometrical feature (42) which replicates the complex geometrical contact region of the two mating surfaces (46,48) to be subsequently sealed.

  • Publication number: 20100270745
Abstract: An elongated elastomeric gasket (10) seals a pair of opposing flanges (12, 14) against the passage of liquid without compressing the flanges (12, 14) together. A reinforcing spring (32) is embedded within the elastomeric gasket (10) and is shaped so as to react when deflected by the operation of installing the gasket (10) into an operative position between the flanges (12, 14). A strategically located U-shaped bend (34) formed in the reinforcing spring (32) causes, in a preferred embodiment, contact pressure to be increased between opposed sealing beads at the other end of the gasket. More specifically, lateral contact pressure between a first pair of sealing beads (24) and their associated contact faces (38) is increased as a direct result of the reinforcing spring (32) being displaced during the assembly process.

  • Patent number: 7802940
Abstract: A ball and socket joint assembly comprises a housing having an interior socket and an exterior surface at least partially knurled for press fit into a mating first suspension part, such as a control arm. A ball is rotatably seated within the socket to provide an articulating joint. A mounting shank extends from the ball, outwardly from the housing, for attaching to a second suspension component, such as a suspended wheel. The housing, together with its knurls, is formed in a forging tool. As distinguished from the prior art technique of machining, knurls formed in the forging process allow economical, high-volume production. In addition, the forging technique allows greater design flexibility to place knurls in surface configurations and with longitudinal profiles and non-uniform shapes previously unattainable or impractical with conventional machining techniques.

  • Patent number: 7800483
Abstract: A method for controlling the intensity of light within an interior passenger compartment in a motor vehicle to create perceived sensations of safety, comfort and personal accommodation in conjunction with specified, night time, driving-related occurrences. The natural human desire for safety is satisfied as a driver approaches a parked motor vehicle by illuminating the interior passenger compartment with a plurality of light sources (18, 20, 22) in response to having produced a safety approach signal. The natural human desire to be comfortable within a confined space is satisfied by the act of opening the door (28), whereupon the interior illumination intensity is automatically lowered to a second intensity level. Once the transmission shift selector is moved out of its Park condition, the interior light intensity is automatically decreased to a third intensity level to provide the sensation of stress reduction and thus satisfy the natural human desire to be at peace.
