Abstract: A method for reducing fuel permeation through gasketed joints in an internal combustion engine (10) includes surface treating the gaskets in a halogenated medium before placing them into service. A low-cost elastomer such as acrylic, EPDM or HNBR, can be used for the gasket body. The halogenated medium may comprise either a liquid bath or a gaseous bath, into which the gasket is immersed. The halogenated medium bath is excited by heating to accelerate the halogenation process. A gasket treated according to this invention possesses a chemically altered exterior surface which substantially enhances its fuel permeability resistance at relatively low cost.

Abstract: A fabric sleeve and hybrid yarn filament used in construction of the sleeve for protecting elongate members against at least one of EMI, RFI or ESD, and methods of construction of the sleeve and hybrid yarn filament. The sleeve includes at least one interlaced hybrid yarn filament having a non-conductive filament and at least one conductive wire filament overlying an outer surface of the non-conductive filament. The hybrid yarn filament is arranged in electrical communication with itself or other hybrid yarn filaments to provide uniform shielding against EMI, RFI, and/or ESD.
Abstract: A spark plug (10) having an elongated ceramic insulator (12) includes numerous design features in various strategic locations. At least the ground electrode (26) is fitted with a rimmed, hemispherical metallic sparking tip (56) which controls rogue electrical arcing (62) and facilitates attachment techniques due to increased surface contact with the ground electrode (26). The various features of the spark plug (10) cooperate with one another so that the physical dimensions of the spark plug (10) can be reduced to meet current demands of newer engines without sacrificing mechanical strength or performance.
Abstract: A multilayer ceramic structure is formed by building up a plurality of layers by sequentially coating a substrate with a series of suspensions comprising particles in a fluid medium. A composition of the sequential layers are varied to produce a structure with the desired properties. The thickness of the layers can be controlled by rheological properties of the suspension and/or by the utilization of a gelling or coagulating agent. An advantage of this method is that complete drying between the subsequent coatings is not required.

Abstract: A machine tool assembly includes a high speed rotating spindle for forming extremely precise surface contours on a work piece. The spindle is supported on a spherical air bearing about its center of gravity. The spindle can be rotated through an air turbine drive system incorporated into the spherical air bearing to eliminate any undesirable moments about an axis perpendicular to the long spindle axis. The spindle is adjustable in pitch and yaw directions through the influence of X-Y actuators. The X-Y actuation system is preferably electromagnetic and provides a non-contact method of displacing the spindle shaft in a controlled manner at any speed.

Abstract: A spark plug having a center electrode and a ground electrode wherein the spark portion of at least one of the center electrode and ground electrode includes a base material and a protective material that substantially prevents corrosion of the base material.
Abstract: A central connecting device (36) for a flat blade style wiper blade assembly (20) includes a plastic intermediate base (38) that is fixed, such as by ultrasonic welding, to a pair of flexors (26) extending the length of the wiper blade assembly (20). The intermediate base (38) includes a recessed deck section (42) for receiving a metallic housing (54). The housing (54) is heat-staked in position to the intermediate base (38) to secure the two elements together as an integral unit. A rivet (78) extends transversely across the sidewalls (58) of the housing (54) for adjoining to a universal connector (82) or other suitable adaptor or by direction connection to the end of a wiper arm.
