  • Patent number: 7607206
Abstract: A monolithic, multi-layer heating element forms the high temperature tip of a glow plug assembly. The heating element includes a conductive core which is surrounded by an insulator layer, which in turn supports a resistive layer. An optional conductive jacket can surround the resistive layer. These layered components are pre-formed in prior operations and then assembled one into the other to form a precursor structure. The precursor structure is transferred to a die, where it is compressed to form a so-called green part having dimensional attributes proportional to the finished heating element. The individual layers remain substantially intact, with some boundary layer mixing possible to enhance material-to-material bonding. The green part is sintered to bond to various materials together into an essentially solid mass. Various finishing operations may be required, following which the heating element is assembled to form a glow plug.

  • Patent number: 7607807
Abstract: A vehicular light assembly (10) is held in an operative position within a liner (12) by an intermediate retainer (32) which has spring-like tongues (42). The retainer (32) is held in position on the liner (12) by fixation tabs (36) which are bent through the receiving hole (18) and pinch the liner (12) against a mounting plate (34) of the retainer (32). Segmented shoulders (46) on a sidewall (20) of the light assembly (10) are received in channels (48) on each of the tongues (42) and seat above the tips (44) of each tongue (42) to retain the light assembly (10) in its operative position. By simple application of a manual force, a service person is able to install or remove the light assembly (10) from its operative position in the liner (12). Thus, no tools are required to install or service the light assembly (10). Furthermore, the intermediate retainer (32) functions as a single unit to interconnect the liner (12) and the light assembly (10).

  • Patent number: 7603944
Abstract: A piston assembly and wrist pin therefor provide a method for controlling rotation of the wrist pin with respective piston pin bores and connecting rod small end wrist pin bore. The wrist pin has a cylindrical body with opposite end portions spaced axially from one another by a central portion and a through bore of varying internal diameter. The through bore has first diameter and second diameters, wherein the first diameter is less than the second diameter. The first diameter is defined in one of the central portion or the opposite end portions, while the second diameter is defined in the other of the central portion or the opposite end portions. The first diameter transitions to the second diameter generally between the small end of the connecting rod and the pin bores of the piston.

  • Patent number: 7604386
Abstract: A lamp socket for an automotive exterior lamp assembly that can be used with a replaceable incandescent bulb. The lamp socket comprises a plastic socket made from nylon 4,6. The lamp socket exhibits reduced outgassing that would otherwise result from photo-oxidative degradation of the polymers in the plastic socket. This helps prevent fogging of the lamp assembly lens and/or reflector for improved performance and aesthetic appearance over the life of the lamp assembly. The incandescent bulb used in the assembly can include a press-sealed end having a sleeve attached over the press-sealed end, and the sleeve can be made from at least one of nylon 4,6, PEI and PPA. The incandescent bulb may also have a molded plastic base, and the base can also be made from at least one of nylon 4,6, PEI and PPA.

  • Patent number: 7600539
Abstract: A low profile fold protective textile sleeve for bundling elongate members has longitudinally and laterally interlaced monofilament warp and fill yarns. Flat profile monofilaments are employed in the warp direction and round monofilaments in the fill direction. The flat monofilaments are considerably wider than they are thick, and provide the sleeve with flexibility and bending out of the plane of the sleeve. The round monofilaments may be sized so that their diameter is about the same as the thickness of the flat monofilaments, and they can be bundled together so that the effective width of each bundle approximates the width of the flat monofilament yarns with which they are intertwined. The round monofilaments are heat-set along at least a portion of their length to provide biased living hinge regions of the sleeve, while also lending strength and stiffness to the sleeve along the fill direction.

  • Patent number: 7600940
Abstract: A ball joint includes a housing extending between open and closed ends. The housing has a cavity with a cylindrical wall extending from adjacent the closed end to an annular flange adjacent the open end. A stud extends into the cavity. An inner bearing element has a bore configured to slide relative to the stud and an outer bearing surface. An outer bearing element is configured to slide relative to the housing and has an inner bearing surface for pivotal movement with the inner bearing element outer bearing surface. An annular cup is disposed between the closed end of the housing and the outer bearing element. The cup can slide relative to the housing and has a bore allowing axial movement of the stud. A spring member imparts an axial bias force on the cup and imparts a preload between the outer bearing element and the inner bearing element.

  • Patent number: 7591583
Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus and method for detecting flaws in an object. The method includes the step of heating a portion of a surface of an object wherein the surface is defined by a plurality of individual surface elements. The method also includes the step of recording a plurality of thermal images of the portion over time with a thermal imaging device. Each of the plurality of thermal images is defined by a plurality of pixels. Each of the plurality of pixels has an individual pixel address and corresponds to one of the plurality of individual surface elements. The method also includes the step of determining a pixel intensity for each of the plurality pixels in each of the plurality of thermal images. The method also includes the step of integrating the pixel intensity of each of the plurality of pixels having the same individual address from respective thermal images to establish elements within an array of integrated pixel intensity.

  • Patent number: 7589460
Abstract: A spark plug (10) having an elongated ceramic insulator (12) includes numerous design features in various strategic locations. At least the ground electrode (26) is fitted with a rimmed, hemispherical metallic sparking tip (56) which controls rogue electrical arcing (62) and facilitates attachment techniques due to increased surface contact with the ground electrode (26). The various features of the spark plug (10) cooperate with one another so that the physical dimensions of the spark plug (10) can be reduced to meet current demands of newer engines without sacrificing mechanical strength or performance.

  • Patent number: 7581304
Abstract: A spark plug having a multilayer firing tip that minimizes the amount of precious metal used and a method of assembling a spark plug with a multilayer firing tip. The firing tip includes a discharge end and a weld end, with the weld end being connected to a center electrode, and more specifically to a base electrode on the center electrode. The weld end has a coefficient of thermal expansion, which is not between the values for the coefficients of thermal expansion for the discharge end and the base electrode. More specifically, the weld end has a coefficient of thermal expansion which is greater than the coefficients of thermal expansion for the discharge end and base electrode. The weld end is formed from Nickel and Chromium with a limited amount of additional elements. The spark plug is assembled by providing a first elongated material formed from the material used for the discharge end and a second elongated material formed from a material used for the weld end.

  • Patent number: 7575349
Abstract: A CHMSL (16) or other lighting system feature of an automobile (10) includes a feature for presenting personal expressions in the form of words or symbols but is automatically deactivated when the regular vehicle lighting system is in use. The personal expression is fixed in a tangible medium by way of phosphor-coated indicia (34) placed within a UV impervious housing (18). A secondary UV light source (36) selectively energizes the phosphor-coated indicia (34) so that the irradiated material glows and is visible through a light transmissive screen (20). The light transmissive screen (20) is provided with a UV blocking agent so that harmful UV rays do not escape the housing (18). The phosphor-coated indicia (34) can be mounted on a removable transparent plate (30), on light dispersion optics (24, 26), or on the inner face of the light transmissive screen (20).
