Abstract: A method of in vitro fucosylation of selectin ligands on cord blood-derived hematopoietic stem cells for bone marrow transplantation is disclosed. In this method, an effective amount of an ?1,3-fucosyltransferase, e.g., ?1,3-fucosyltransferase VI, is used in vitro to treat cord blood-derived hematopoietic stem cells to convert non-functional PSGL-1 or other ligands on the cell surface into functional forms that bind selectins, especially P-selectin or E-selectin. The treated cells have enhanced effectiveness in reconstituting bone marrow in patients in need of such therapy.
Abstract: Kits, apparatus, devices and methods for treating varicose veins caused by an incompetent venous junction (e.g., the saphenofemoral and/or saphenopopliteal junctions) are disclosed. The kits may include a sheath, a vein closure device, and an injection device. Alternatively, a vein closure device may include an integral injection channel and injection device. Methods may include injecting a vein with a sclerosing agent through a needle that extends in a direction that is not aligned with a longitudinal axis of a sheath or shaft.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a recombinant adenovirus expressing an ?A-crystallin gene, and gene therapy for retinal vascular disease using the recombinant adenovirus. Gene therapy using the recombinant adenovirus comprising an ?A-crystallin gene of the present invention increases the expression level of the ?A-crystallin gene in the damaged retinal pericytes to suppress pericyte loss and death, retinal vascular leakage, and leukocyte adhesion surrounding retinal vessels, thereby protecting the pericytes. Therefore, it can be used for the prevention and treatment of various retinal vascular diseases including diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract: Provided are a white-emitting monomolecular compound using excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) characteristics, and an organic electroluminescence device and a laser device comprising same. The white-emitting monomolecular compound according to the present invention is prepared by covalently bonding at least two types of molecules which produce different colors and have excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) characteristics. The white-emitting monomolecular compound according to the present invention achieves white luminescence irrespective of the concentration thereof and of the state of the materials thereof, and therefore can be used in a variety of fields including an organic electroluminescence device and a laser device.

Abstract: Critical sections of multi-threaded programs, normally protected by locks providing access by only one thread, are speculatively executed concurrently by multiple threads with elision of the lock acquisition and release. Upon a completion of the speculative execution without actual conflict as may be identified using standard cache protocols, the speculative execution is committed, otherwise the speculative execution is squashed. Speculative execution with elision of the lock acquisition, allows a greater degree of parallel execution in multi-threaded programs with aggressive lock usage.
Abstract: An image interpolation apparatus is provided which includes an edge area distinguishing part configured to distinguish an edge area including an edge from an image; an edge area classifying part configured to classify the edge area into a plurality of regions; and an interpolation part configured to perform interpolation the regions in different manners.
Abstract: Delivery systems and methods are provided for delivering a biologically active protein to a host animal. The systems and methods provided include obtaining an algal cell transformed by an expression vector, the expression vector comprising a nucleotide sequence coding for the biologically active protein, operably linked to a promoter. In one illustrated embodiment, the biologically active protein is an antigenic epitope and upon administration to the animal the algal cell induces an immune response in the host animal.
