Abstract: Disclosed are systems and methods for coupling translation of a target gene to a detectable response gene. A version of the invention includes a translation-coupling cassette. The translation-coupling cassette includes a target gene, a response gene, a response-gene translation control element, and a secondary structure-forming sequence that reversibly forms a secondary structure masking the response-gene translation control element. Masking of the response-gene translation control element inhibits translation of the response gene. Full translation of the target gene results in unfolding of the secondary structure and consequent translation of the response gene. Translation of the target gene is determined by detecting presence of the response-gene protein product.

Abstract: A semiconductor device manufacturing method which achieves a contact of a low resistivity is provided. In a state where a first metal layer in contact with a semiconductor is covered with a second metal layer for preventing oxidation, only the first metal layer is silicided to form a silicide layer with no oxygen mixed therein. As a material of the first metal layer, a metal having a work function difference of a predetermined value from the semiconductor is used. As a material of the second metal layer, a metal which does not react with the first metal layer at an annealing temperature is used.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for separating anthocyanins depleted in phenolic mixture content from fruits or vegetables feedstock containing anthocyanins and phenolic mixtures. The first step is to contact the feedstock with a cation-exchange resin at low pH for a time period effective for the resin to selectively bind with the anthocyanins. Next, the non-bound phenolic mixture is separated from the resin for recovery. The bound resin is subjected to solvent wash to release the anthocyanins for recovery.

Abstract: A method and system for distributing images for display by client systems. A distribution system includes an image server system that is connected to image client systems via a communications link, such as the Internet. The image server system is responsible for providing image packages to the image client systems and for collecting information from the image client systems. Each image client system periodically sends a heartbeat communication to the image server system. Upon receiving a heartbeat communication, the image server system determines the state of the image client system that sent the heartbeat communication and responds appropriately. The response may include instructions for the image client system to retrieve new images, to retrieve software updates, to send usage data, and so on.

Abstract: A method, computer program product and system are provided for modeling non-controllable parameters affecting system performance. The method may include receiving historical values for each of a plurality of system parameters and grouping the system parameters into controllable, non-controllable, and performance parameters. The method may further include determining a first set of predictors from the non-controllable parameters using the historical values of these non-controllable parameters and, for each predictor in the first set, determining optimal time instances at which a value of each predictor is measured using non-uniform time scales. These optimal time instances may then be saved as a second set of predictors. One or more constraints may then be established for each of the controllable parameters. Finally, a dynamic model based on the second set of predictors, the controllable parameters, and the performance parameters may be constructed and optimized.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a solution-finding method, which finds an approximate solution of an equation having difficulty in obtaining an actual solution and a complicated equation in numerical analysis. The method obtains an approximate solution of an equation having a solution in a predetermined interval. Initial values are calculated based on upper and lower limits of the interval. The initial values are applied to a solution-finding equation, including a sign function and the upper and lower limits, and the solution-finding equation is arranged so that a definite integral formula for the sign function is included in the equation. The definite integral formula in the solution-finding equation is calculated using numerical integration, and results of the definite integral formula are applied to the solution-finding equation, thus obtaining an approximate solution. This performance is iterated until the approximate solution satisfies an allowable error.

Abstract: A cast iron brake caliper with improved fatigue life, and a process and process equipment for pre-stressing a cast iron brake caliper to provide improved fatigue life, is provided. In the process, a load is applied to a cast iron caliper, where the load is high enough to locally yield and plastically deform the cast iron material, but not high enough to cause material failure, such as cracking. Upon load removal, residual compressive stresses in the cast iron caliper lower the mid-point of the stress range the plastically-deformed region of the caliper sees during in-service use, and thereby lowers the peak stress seen in this region, increasing fatigue life. The process permits a cast iron brake caliper to be designed to use less material and thus fit within constrained wheel rim envelopes, without the need to resort to high cost materials or other alternative design strategies.

Abstract: Inhibitors of AMPA-type glutamate ion channels are useful as biochemical probes for structure-function studies and as drug candidates for a number of neurological disorders and diseases. Disclosed herein is the identification of an RNA inhibitor or aptamer by an in vitro evolution approach and characterization of its mechanism of inhibition on the sites of interaction by equilibrium binding and on the receptor channel-opening rate by a laser-pulse photolysis technique. The aptamer of the invention is a noncompetitive inhibitor of AMPA-type glutamate ion channels, one that selectively inhibits the GluA2Qflip AMPA receptor subunit without any effect on other AMPA receptor subunits or on kainate or NMDA receptors. Furthermore, the aptamer preferentially inhibits the closed-channel state of GluA2Qflip with a KI=1.5 ?M or by ˜15-fold over the open-channel state. The potency and selectivity of this aptamer rival those of small molecule inhibitors.
