Patent number: 8390501Abstract: A successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is disclosed. A first and second capacitor DACs receive a first and second input signals respectively. A first coarse comparator compares an output of the first capacitor DAC with a window reference voltage, a second coarse comparator compares an output of the second capacitor DAC with the window reference voltage, and a fine comparator compares the output of the first capacitor DAC with the output of the second capacitor DAC. A SAR controller receives outputs of the first and second coarse comparators to determine whether the outputs of the first and second capacitor DACs are within a predictive window determined by the window reference voltage. The SAR controller bypasses at least one phase of analog-to-digital conversion of the SAR ADC when the outputs of the first capacitor DAC and the second capacitor DAC are determined to be within the predictive window.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2011Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignees: NCKU Research and Development Foundation, Himax Technologies Limited, Himax Media Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Soon-Jyh Chang, Guan-Ying Huang, Chun-Cheng Liu, Chung-Ming Huang, Jin-Fu Lin, Chih-Haur Huang

Patent number: 8388907Abstract: The present invention provides a single self-contained device for collecting, extracting, on-site testing, and transferring for forensic confirmatory analysis, a wide variety of substances including, but not limited to, drugs of abuse, explosives, weapons of mass destruction, food toxins and industrial wastes. Samples can be obtained from a surface by swabbing a suspect area or the testing of solid materials (pills, capsules, powders), air samples and biological and non-biological fluids by placing the substance in the device. The device includes a swab, a retention well including a wash, and analysis technologies that can be, for example, a lateral flow testing system. The swab is rinsed with a wash prior to testing thereby not compromising the chemistry of the detection technologies and allowing for a wide variety of applications under a number of field conditions. Also, the device is a single self-contained unit instead of having a separate reagent droppers or sprays, making it compact and easy to use.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2009Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignee: University of Florida Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Mark S. Patent number: 8389660Abstract: The invention is a novel family of polyolefins characterized by chain-walking defects of the type that add extra backbone carbons per monomer. These polyolefins display a large decrease in crystallinity relative to polyolefins known in the art. Specifically, the reduction in crystallinity is much greater than for earlier polypropylenes with a matched content of stereo or 1-alkene type defects. The claimed polyolefins can be made by a late metal Ni(II) catalyst. The defects in the polyolefin backbone are generated by a chain waling mechanism in which three or more carbons per monomer are added to the polymer backbone instead of two, as in conventional polymerization or copolymerization methods of alpha olefins. The novel polyolefins can be used in applications such as plastic wrapping, thin films, co-extrusion layers or molded parts in the absence of polymer blending or copolymerization. The cost of materials production can be reduced.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2011Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignees: The Florida State University Research Foundation, Cornell University Cornell Center for Technology, Enterprise & CommercializationInventors: Rufina Alamo, Geoffrey Coates, Carolina Ruiz-Orta

Patent number: 8391500Abstract: A system and method for rendering a virtual sound source using a plurality of speakers in an arbitrary arrangement includes expanding a wave field of the virtual sound source and a composite wave field generated by the plurality of speakers into multi-pole expansions, and equating the multi-pole expansions to each other to form a continuous equation. A set of constraints is applied to the continuous equation that minimize an error in a sweet spot region resulting in a linear system of equations. The linear system of equations is solved using singular-value decomposition to arrive at a pseudo-inverse representing a multi-dimensional transfer function between the virtual sound source and the plurality of speakers. The multi-dimensional transfer function is then applied to a signal of the virtual sound source to render the virtual sound source in the sweet spot region using the plurality of speakers in the arbitrary arrangement.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2008Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignee: University of Kentucky Research FoundationInventors: Jens Hannemann, Kevin D. Patent number: 8391164Abstract: Aggregates are calculated from a data stream in which data is sent in a sequence of tuples, in which each tuple comprises an item identifier and a timestamp indicating when the tuple was transmitted. The tuples may arrive out-of-order, that is, the sequence in which the tuples arrive are not necessarily in the sequence of their corresponding timestamps. In calculating aggregates, more recent data may be given more weight by multiplying each tuple by a decay function which is a function of the timestamp associated with the tuple and the current time. The tuples are recorded in a quantile-digest data structure. Aggregates are calculated from the data stored in the quantile-digest data structure.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 2008Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignees: AT&T Intellectual Property I, L.P., Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Graham Cormode, Philip Korn, Srikanta Tirthapura
