Abstract: A method for detecting an open-phase condition of a transformer having a grounded-wye high voltage side connection including monitoring current flowing in a neutral connection on the high voltage side of the transformer in real time by voltage relaying and current relaying to identify an open phase condition signature in a signal capable of characterizing change of current magnitude. A current signal may be injected onto the neutral terminal and the zero-sequence mode of the transformer monitored to detect an open-phase condition indicated by an increase in network impedance and decrease or elimination of the injection current.

Abstract: Described herein is the synthesis of adhesive complex coacervates and their use thereof. The adhesive complex coacervates are composed of a mixture of one or more polycations and one or more polyanions. The polycations and polyanions in the adhesive complex coacervate are crosslinked with one another by covalent bonds upon curing. The adhesive complex coacervates have several desirable features when compared to conventional bioadhesives, which are effective in water-based applications. The adhesive complex coacervates described herein exhibit good interfacial tension in water when applied to a substrate (i.e., they spread over the interface rather than being beaded up). Additionally, the ability of the complex coacervate to crosslink intermolecularly increases the cohesive strength of the adhesive complex coacervate. The adhesive complex coacervates have numerous biological applications as bioadhesives and drug delivery devices.
Abstract: Provided are a transmitting device connected to a receiving device via a channel and the receiving device connected to the transmitting device via a channel. The transmitting device connected to a receiving device includes: a transmitter connected to the channel via an output node and configured to transmit, via the channel, a transmission signal to the receiving device, the transmitter having a transmission impedance associated therewith that is variable; and a monitoring device configured to detect a channel impedance of the channel and a receiving impedance of the receiving device by monitoring a voltage level of the output node, the monitoring device configured to set the transmission impedance based on the channel impedance and the receiving impedance.

Abstract: A catalyst is provided for the two electron reduction of oxygen. The catalyst can be reversible or near-reversible. The catalyst comprises a gold and a cobalt coordination complex, i.e., N,N?-bis(salicylidene)ethylene-diaminocobalt (II) (cobalt salen) or a derivative thereof. The cobalt coordination complex can be polymerized to form a film, for example, via electropolymerization, to cover a gold surface. Also provided are metal-air batteries, fuel cells, and air electrodes that comprise the catalyst, as well as methods of using the catalyst, for example, to reduce oxygen and/or produce hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract: A hybrid radiation imaging sensor includes a low x-ray attenuating substrate, a photoconductor disposed over the substrate, and a scintillator disposed over the photoconductor. By combining direct x-ray conversion to electron-hole pairs in the photo-conductor with indirect conversion of x-rays downstream of the photoconductor within the scintillator, improved x-ray imaging can be attained through an electronic readout located upstream of both the photoconductor and the scintillator without the need for excessive x-ray dosing.

Abstract: Accurate measurements of the sound pressure level require regular calibration of the microphone. Closed-coupler calibration devices are designed to work with laboratory and working standard microphones, but there are numerous microphones with dimensions that do not fit a standard coupler. For example, micro-electro-mechanical system microphones are very small and widely used due to their size, performance, and cost. Described herein is an acoustical coupler that can accommodate microphones of arbitrary cross-sectional shape. The coupler utilizes a flexible membrane that adapts to the shape of the microphone. In contrast to a rigid enclosure, the permeability of the membrane creates an open system that reduces the sensitivity to fit. The precision and accuracy of the device is demonstrated by calibrating a small, oddly shaped microphone using the substitution method.

Abstract: A software defined network (SDN)-based network management apparatus includes: an SDN controller including a first management unit to store a plurality of heterogeneous protocol information items, and an SDN switch controlled by the SDN controller and including a second management unit to store at least one heterogeneous protocol information item acquired from the SDN controller and a gateway to communicate with a vehicle network. In particular, upon receiving a packet corresponding to a new protocol that has not been used for access, from an external source, the SDN switch sends a request to the SDN controller for analysis of the received packet, and the SDN controller forwards protocol information corresponding to the received packet among the plurality of heterogeneous information items stored in the first management unit, to the SDN switch.

Abstract: A method for identifying a source of florescence is disclosed which includes shining light on a subject at a first wavelength, causing emission of light at a second wavelength from the source of fluorescence, filtering out light at the first wavelength, capturing at least one 2 dimensional (2D) image of a subject having a plurality of pixels at the second wavelength, and establishing information about approximate location of a source of florescence within a tissue of the subject, selectively generating a 3D geometric model where the model is adapted to provide a model representation of the at least one 2D captured image, comparing the modeled at least one 2D captured image to the captured at least one 2D image and iteratively adjusting the model to minimize the difference, and outputting location and geometric configuration of the source of fluorescence within the tissue within the region of interest.
