Abstract: An omnidirectional electromagnet (100) is disclosed. The omnidirectional electromagnet (100) comprises a ferromagnetic core (110) and three orthogonal solenoids (120, 130, 140) disposed about the core (110). Each solenoid (120, 130, 140) is adapted to receive a current from a current source to control an orientation and a magnitude of a magnetic field generated by the omnidirectional electromagnet (100). One or more omnidirectional electromagnets (100) can be used as a single magnetic manipulation system. The magnetic field generated by the omnidirectional electromagnet system can be used to control at least one of a force, a torque, an orientation, and a position of an adjacent magnetic object.
Abstract: A technique for forming a material including nanotwinned silver crystals in solid solution with a solute that exhibits enhanced strength and desirable electrical conductivity, as compared to coarse-grained material. Synthesis of nanotwinned silver alloy material is achieved by cooling of a substrate and co-deposition of silver and the solute. Controlling the processing conditions of synthesis allows for tailoring of the nanostructure and mechanical properties of the nanotwinned silver alloy material. A material including nanotwinned silver crystals in solid solution with a solute also is described.

Abstract: A system for use in a lecture environment in which a lecturer delivers a lecture to students. The lecturer can broadcast questions to the students to test their understanding of the subject matter of the lecture, and the students' answers to those question are made available to the lecturer in real time. This makes it possible for the lecturer to adapt the lecture to the students' level of understanding of the subject matter of the lecture.

Abstract: Cell-free translation and assembly systems allow for HBV capsid assembly under cell-free conditions that also mimic the physiological salt and protein concentrations. These hepatitis virus capsid assembly systems utilize the C-terminal domain (CTD) and N-terminal domain (NTD) of the hepatitis capsid protein in capsid assembly. Uses of the system include the identification of potential new therapeutic strategies and screening of potential therapeutic agents which target these domains and modulate capsid assembly and/or disassembly and other functions of these domains in HBV replication and pathogenesis.
Abstract: An internally ventilated brake disc with a disc coning reducing arrangement is provided in which temperature differences between inboard and outboard sides of the brake disc are minimized in order to reduce coning-causing differential thermal expansion. Between a radially inner region of a brake disc that includes brake disc-to-axle hub mounting features and a radially outer region the mass of the inboard side of the brake disc is distributed in a manner that reduces the amount of differential thermal expansion occurring during brake application between the inboard and outboard sides of the brake disc, thereby minimizing thermally-induced coning effects. The inboard side disc plate portion may having an increasing axial thickness in the direction from the radially outer region to the radially inner region, providing additional material mass to receive and dissipate heat energy received during a braking event.

Abstract: Patterned hydrogel arrays and methods of preparing patterned hydrogel arrays are disclosed. Advantageously, the methods used to prepare the patterned hydrogel arrays allow for controlling individual hydrogel spot conditions such as hydrogel spot modulus, hydrogel spot ligand identity and hydrogel spot ligand density, which allows for preparing a wide range of hydrogel spots in a single array format. Patterned hydrogel arrays can also be formed to include hydrogel-free pools surrounded by hydrogel. Additionally, the patterned hydrogel arrays of the present disclosure support the culture of a range of cell types. The patterned hydrogel arrays offer the ability to rapidly screen substrate components for influencing cell attachment, spreading, proliferation, migration, and differentiation.

Abstract: In one aspect, the disclosed technology relates to a method which, in one example embodiment, includes acquiring magnetic resonance imaging data for a plurality of images of the heart of a subject during free breathing of the subject. The method also includes generating an additional plurality of images with high tissue-blood contrast over the region of interest, and selecting a subset of images from the plurality of images, based upon a pre-determined quality metric of image similarity, to be used for non-rigid image registration. The method also includes aligning the subset of images by non-rigid image registration using a combination of the plurality of images and the additional plurality of images, and creating a parametric map from the aligned images.

Each optical coupler can couple an electromagnetic field incident on the respective facet towards the substrate as the electromagnetic field proceeds into the semiconductor photonic device. In some examples, each coupler has waveguides extending in a longitudinal direction and at least partly encapsulated within corresponding cladding layers. A first waveguide extends farther from the facet in the longitudinal direction than does a second waveguide. The second waveguide is located farther above the silicon substrate than is the first waveguide. The coupler can include a stack of waveguide assemblies. A lower waveguide assembly can include one waveguide. An intermediate or upper waveguide assembly can include multiple waveguides. In some examples, at least one waveguide tapers along its length.
