Abstract: Single crystals are described that contain several regimes within the crystal that perform different functions related to the enhanced performance of a laser gain medium. At least one regime of the single crystals can be utilized to suppress amplified spontaneous emission and parasitic oscillation in a laser gain medium. A single crystal can include core and cladding regions, the cladding region providing amplified spontaneous emission suppression. The core region of the crystal can include as dopant one or more ions that take part in the lasing when suitably pumped. The amplified spontaneous emission suppression region can include as dopant one or more ions that can prevent additional spontaneous emission that can to depletion of the upper laser states, thus reducing laser performance including one or more ions that absorb spontaneously emitted photons and/or a higher concentration of the active lasing ions of the core.
Abstract: A method comprising: mapping an image onto multiple level sets connected by multiple branches, wherein each of said level sets corresponds to a predefined range of values for an attribute of said image; associating multiple pixels of said image to said multiple level sets in accordance with the value of each pixel; identifying a source level set associated with a source pixel of said multiple pixels; for each of said multiple pixels, determining that a distance between said source pixel and one of said multiple pixels is within a predefined threshold, wherein said distance is calculated as a function of a first distance between said source level set and said level set associated with said one of said multiple pixels; in one embodiment, the determined distance is applied to an image processing application to produce a processed image, and the processed image is rendered on a rendering medium.

Abstract: Mutant fibroblast growth factor (FGF) proteins having a polypeptide sequence with a high sequence identity to proteins encoded by members of the Fgf-1 subfamily of genes from a mammalian species, such as human, and with a specific amino acid substitution of an alanine at a position corresponding to amino acid position 66 of human FGF-1 with a cysteine and/or a specific amino acid substitution of a phenylalanine at a position corresponding to amino acid position 132 of human FGF-1 with a tryptophan (based on the 140 amino acid numbering scheme of human FGF-1) are provided. Other amino acid mutations or substitutions may be combined. Polynucleotide sequences encoding the mutant FGF proteins and host cells containing such polynucleotide sequences are provided. Methods of administering a mutant FGF protein to an individual to treat an ischemic condition or disease or a wound or tissue injury are also provided.

Abstract: A plasma-based processing method includes depositing a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) material onto a substrate. The TMDC material is plasma treated in an oxygen containing ambient to oxidize the TMDC material to form oxidized dielectric TMDC material. The oxidized dielectric TMDC material has a higher electrical resistivity as compared an electrical resistivity of the TMDC material before the plasma treating, typically >103 times greater.

Abstract: A promoted carbon and/or non-carbon base sorbent are described that are highly effective for the removal of mercury from flue gas streams. The promoted sorbent comprises a carbon and/or non-carbon base sorbent that has reacted with and contains forms of halogen and halides. Optional components may be added to increase and/or preserve reactivity and mercury capacity. These may be added directly with the base sorbent, or in-flight within a gas stream (air, flue gas, etc.), to enhance base sorbent performance and/or mercury capture. Mercury removal efficiencies obtained exceed conventional methods. The promoted sorbent can be regenerated and reused. Base sorbent treatment and preparation methods are also described. New methods for in-flight preparation, introduction, and control of the active base sorbent into the mercury contaminated gas stream are described.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the synthesis of a novel compound, in which liquid hydrazine and the derivatives thereof react with excess carbon dioxide to enable the carbon dioxide to chemically bond to the hydrazine and the derivatives thereof. To this end, high-pressure carbon dioxide is used to synthesize hydrazine and the derivatives thereof to which the carbon dioxide is bonded in a pure form with no water and no by-product. Furthermore, the present invention provides a method for utilizing the above-described compounds by reacting the compounds with carbonyl compounds.

Abstract: A novel method for real-time small-signal stability analysis for power electronic-based components in a power system. The method may be used to monitor a power system in real-time by perturbing the source side of an electronic-based component of the power system using a shunt current injection of about 0.5 to 1 percent of a nominal current of the power system at the source side, and perturbing the load side of the power electronic-based component by varying the voltage at the load side. Time-domain results of the perturbations may be transferred to frequency-domain results and the stability of the power system may be monitored by obtaining a Nyquist contour and employing Generalized Nyquist Criterion or unit circle criterion.
